Sony Action Cam - GoPro competitor (HDR-AS10 and HDR-AS15)

Libor, we'd _love_ to see you jumping with us. The AfterBurner tracking camp consists of training from all of the Skydive Elsinore Wingsuit School coaches (Joel, Tom, Darren, and myself). We spend the first bit of the morning on a tuffet trainer working on body positions, and then break out into groups of 3-4 people and do slot-specific tracking jumps. We'll emphasize exits and navigation, plus body position. It's a lot of fun, everyone tells us they enjoy the way we brief/jump/debrief each jump (with video). It's essentially the same format as the well-known Excel camps. Hope to have you join us! [edit] just saw you're only here on Friday. We can work with you a bit between jumps; the tracking camp is only happening on Thursday. We'll have an extra organizer here on Friday, find me and I'll take some time out to get you rockin!

Standardized Wingsuit Instruction Opinion Poll
DSE replied to DSE's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
On November 1, 2012 USPA Membership will have the opportunity to provide an opinion on the subject of standardized wingsuit training via USPA. Your opportunity to provide input will be included in the USPA Board of Directors Election ballot. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1y-Exdt_44nB2AgINM7MEWkZ-SytVM-HuyzK_HNRWtD0/edit Please read the document so you are able to make an informed decision on November 1. -
Sony Action Cam - GoPro competitor (HDR-AS10 and HDR-AS15)
DSE replied to soulbabel's topic in Photography and Video
So far, everyone has reported a great image. At high frame rates, it's the best of them. It's small. It's lighter weight. It has a substantial, real, mount. It may or may not be optimal for your helmet if you want a side mount; the display is on the right side (not an issue for me, personally, but I likely won't side mount, either). Colors are natural; it's easier for an editor to post great content. File format is standard, so it's easily worked with both Mac and PC systems. It could have been an even better image had Sony not bowed to the idiocy of Apple's older OS. I'm not clear on why you feel "Sony has dropped the ball" in a game that hasn't been played yet. GoPro is a formidable competitor, well-entrenched in every sport. I don't think Sony is out to "put GoPro away" but rather to offer an alternative that is smaller, lighter, and has appeal where a GoPro may not be appropriate, or for those that want a slimmer profile. -

unfortunately, it currently means you can only connect to one device at a time, too. A few more mounts in the box would be nice; I do like the solid camera thread tho. -

Mark, not having this issue here. I have been using a Samsung Galaxy 3, Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, and an iPhone to connect, it opens right up once the app was installed. If the camera is on, it's instantly connected. Are you using the PlayMemories MOBILE app or the PMOnline app? The irreplaceable lens is not ideal, and I'm really disappointed it's not AVCHD. The original intention of this cam was AVCHD, but because of Apple's very f'd up licensing at the time (now Mountain Lion can read), Sony opted for h.264. Sacrificed quality for access. Sony Action Cam - GoPro competitor (HDR-AS10 and HDR-AS15)
DSE replied to soulbabel's topic in Photography and Video
http://youtu.be/7mHRGZio8g8 This is the cam in 120p mode (lower resolution). I have not jumped it yet, as there are differences between pre-production and production units. I've only had pre-production until this morning. However, I don't agree that GoPro is cleaner/sharper. We have several jumps (among other things) scheduled for Wednesday with 5 POV cams for comparison purposes, all shooting the same things (not all skydiving). One thing for certain, the Sony Wifi control actually works. Like each of the cams, it's going to have its issues. So far, what I like best about the AS-15 is that it does not artificially grade the color and reduce gradients to save bandwidth. Now that I can speak on the cam, I'm really disappointed that Sony opted for AVC vs AVCHD, simply to make Apple users happier. Quality sacrificed for laziness... it's unfortunate. -
Tracking Suit - Palms Up or Palms Down
DSE replied to LiborJanicek's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I agree. IF, and it's a big IF, there is a minor, minor aerodynamic advantage with the palms up, I feel it's still a weaker position and less natural for a "palms down" belly flyer. It's easier to push on the air with your palms than press on the air with the backs of your hands. Most people need to work more on their legs and torsos during their track than trying some fancy hand flipping over thing. +1, not too many folks use their hips and legs properly. In context of prepping for WS, better view of altimeter and smoother leading edge...now my curiousity is up. Gimme a couple days, I'll see if I can toss out a couple jumps, one of each, both measured with a Flysight and Altitrack. -

Some of the Elsinore folks were specifically asked to not attend. Congrats on the 100 way. I saw it on our second jump of the day, a blog against the clouds...very nice. Congrats to all the participants, it's a shame that it couldn't beat the 68 or 71 ways (with regard to the grid). Was a grand, beautiful thing to see.

FWIW, palms up presents a more clean profile, and prevents forearms from generating drag. Not saying it's "better" but it does have some advantages when _properly_ applied. https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BxhZWxju4_IlQUZDdGtnZUlqM2s/edit Check out the proper/improper pix in this document. Please bear in mind it's for WS, not tracking, but the are related. -

Absolulely you can learn to fly your body in a Skyflyer, even though it isn't ideal for where you'll go next. Flying your body is more important than fabric flying you. Nothing you can't "unlearn" very, very fast. Flying your body is the primary skill (and one so few people really learn before upsizing), and a small suit will give you those skills if you work on improving each jump.

Insurance brokers warning to DZO's/Plane owners
DSE replied to PhreeZone's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Several dropzones already have implemented extremely effective new procedures and policies; it's called "No more wingsuiting at this DZ." And they've done it in the last week. Programs like the one implemented at Skydive Elsinore 3 years ago have worked well too, but they were years in development. -
I have nightmares of the sound of a body hitting the ground (not my own). I have nightmares after seeing a couple canopy collisions as well. But I've never dreamed about my own death. In my mind, I guess I dream myself one day becoming as old and wise as Twardo

You are still not answering the question or comparing like with like, has there been a decrease in the number of novice wingsuiters being involved in incidents since the bsr was introduced? In other words are the wingsuit students better/safer then the students who started before the bsr or do they just have more jumps now when the incidents occur? That is the significant comparison Another way to ask the same question would be, are wingsuiters with less then say 25 wingsuit jumps behaving safer then pre bsr wingsuiters with less then 25 wingsuit jumps? I ask because we make assumptions about the causes of certain things and create rules in response but I see very little analysis after the rules are introduced to make sure they are working as intended. If we keep doing it that way we are going to be inundated with minor rules and changes that give the appearance of meaningfull action when in reality they are of no benefit whatsoever I'm not answering the way you'd like to interpret it; maybe a different explanation will help you. A-There were 5 verified pre-200 skydive wingsuit fatalities (majority of them in the 100-120 jump area) prior to BSR. B-There have been zero verified or rumored wingsuit fatalities of sub 100 skydive jumpers. This is objective. Are wingsuiters of 25 jumps today "behaving safer" than wingsuiters with 25 jumps 3 years ago? I'd say "no." But that's a subjective response. Statistically, tailstrikes are on the rise (for example). I hear off-landings are increased. Incidents would suggest as much. In our region, I'd give it a qualified "yes, they behave better" but then again, I hear that Elsinore's flight lanes and required briefing/sticker are "too much regulation." What's your point? Are you feeling that wingsuiters can negotiate with an insurance company or the federal gov't? -

You weren't using a meaningfull comparison thats all. If people are not allowed jump a wingsuit until after 200 jumps then obviously there will be no deaths of people with under 200 jumps on a wingsuit, that dosn't mean it has made anything safer. So you are confident that there were 70 student to novice level wingsuit deaths before the bsr and since the bsr there have been 2/3? While hard to believe if that is the case that is great. With the thread meandering so much, I can see how one might miss some posts and read "70 deaths caused BSR." 5 verified/known fatals in 4 years due to sub 200 skydives prior to wearing a wingsuit. BSR passed in 2010. Since BSR, Zero fatals due to sub 200 skydives prior to wearing wingsuit. -

more pix for you to post. The "Fight the bite" graphic in PSD is availablehttps://docs.google.com/open?id=0BxhZWxju4_IlaDRZX2Ftbk45SG8 Crappy graphic, but the artist couldn't sketch up a Caravan or PAC. Trends Reported thus far in 2012, less than 2011 at this time. That's a good thing. -

That's in the same vein as saying, "Skyboarding? Nobody does that anymore; they all died!" Valid point, the book only offers 30-odd names. The rest are just numbers. Whatever the number was, it was enough to cause USPA to ban wingsuits until the late 80's. -

How many fatalities have there been involving people with more then 200 skydives but few wingsuit jumps and how does that compare to the numbers of fatalities before the bsr was implememnted because thats the comparison that matters Historically pre-BSR? 70+ (which is why they were banned by USPA) Post BSR specifically related to the wingsuit and skydive? 2, arguably 3. The initial point was that USPA intervention (so far) has halted the several incidents and reversed the trend. Which part of that needs greater explaining? -

There are exit methods being taught today that encourage potential tailstrikes throughout a wingsuiting career. There are exit methods being taught today that discourage potential tailstrikes throughout a wingsuiting career. ### At least 5 sub-200 skydives before wingsuiting fatalities occurred prior to USPA reluctantly passing a BSR that says (BSR 2, Sec J-6) "Any person performing a wingsuit jump must have at least 200 skydives, and hold a current USPA license.[E]" How many fatalities of sub 200 jump jumpers since the passage of the BSR? Zero. To any outside agency this says "The governing body took action, the issue has been significantly reduced/halted." Before the passage of the BSR, some people said "Not enough people have died to warrant a BSR being passed." How more effectively may DZO's, aircraft providers, and insurance companies be assured persons in a wingsuit have been taught the same principles and techniques? Without standardized instruction, they cannot be assured of anything except "more of the same," which isn't good enough. Change the training, change the culture. -
