    Coaches

This mainly applies to the smaller cessna DZ's. I have noticed that the new coaches rating has put low time jumpers in the position of molding our new free-fallers. What is concerning me is that most people transition from students to free-fliers. Is it a good idea to rely on them when they have spent little time learning how to belly fly? I am probably guilty of being old school with training, but is it going to be necessary to have coaches/instructors checked out in different disciplines? I know I would never be able to teach freeflying. I guess I am a little concerned about the future.
  2. How many were on the attempts for the POP's?
  3. Construction, deployment, pilot chute.....etc. We just used to throw together whatever was on the load. And sometimes the parachutes didn't play well with others. I have a few reserve rides to prove that.
  4. I highly recommend trying one with appropriate parachutes and someone experienced. We also used to do a lot of dragplanes where you have a down plane at the bottom of a four stack. CRW parachutes have come a long way....
  5. True that everyone should have tracking skills, but you also must be able to stay within a group for a certain time and then turn the jets on. Not just take off from your team leader. Why have tracking teams if you just blast off? I am more concerned about those that take right off in a steep dive and feel it necessary to open under people.
  6. Tracking off is about being part of the team and saving yourself. You have to be disciplined in the way you track. Its just like the people who think that putting the power swoop on the formation and passing several people on the way. Sure they are fast but they cause more danger for the team. Most bigger ways use tracking teams anyway. If you can't stay within your team for the designated time, then you don't belong.
  7. I agree...I have played both sports competitively and Hockey is by far the more demanding and more difficult sport to do. Not to mention a whole lot more fun.
  8. At work today we had a mommy duck and several little ones trucking across the ramp and she led them right over a storm drain. Over half of them took a dive. Several co-workers pulled up the grate and held on to a woman's feet to rescue them. A great humanitarian act or is natural selection disturbed?
  9. No, but if I was caught I would not expect amnesty
  10. Kansas.....Lot's of room and no hurricanes or earthquakes. Oh forgot about tornadoes. My bad.
  11. I think its about the law. Does it excuse stealing food if you are hungry? I would steal food to feed the family if I had no other way, but I would expect punishment for breaking the law.
  12. They landed finally in Malaysia and then went through the paperwork to come to US and become citizens. I know this has been talked about too much, but hearing his story today made me think how much we take for granted.
  13. In the past people have been so desperate to leave oppressed governments that they would risk everything to get here and do it legally. We now want to consider rewarding those who have broken the law to enter the country.
  14. I just had a discussion with a co-worker who originally came here from Viet Nam, and it really made me think of the immigration issue. I won't go into all of the details, but it was quite a story. He had his wife and two toddlers on a small boat with 62 other people trying to flee the communists for 35 days. There were many disgusting stories. They also were rejected by several countries and even drug back to sea. The moral is that he and his family made it to the US legally despite many life threatening obstacles. Why do we allow people to break the law to enter when there are many who would risk life and limb for a chance to be a citizen legally?
  15. I made up my mind some time ago not to keep them piling up, but I sure did enjoy looking back at the old covers. Thanks for doing that, it brought back some memories....
  16. I believe that justice was served. We shouldn't base our sentence by what we think he wants. It should be by the system we have in place. I am curious what the muslim population both in and out of prison think. Will he be a marked man in the slammer or a hero?
  17. Very good stuff. I feel that fear is lack of faith. I won't turn this into something religious, but it is a factor for me. I also believe that training and experience provides faith that we can deal with all situations that arise. Fear can be a bit of a motivator as well. I know from working on airplanes that if I am taking a panel off the top of the plane I am much more careful than if it is on the belly. Same motions, just a little more danger. I am not paralyzed by it just more aware. I also think it is ironic that a sport that works best when we are relaxed, has so many that are completely tense the whole skydive. BREATH!!!
  18. I hope the oilers do win now that the Stars are gone.
  19. As much as it costs, it must have some gold in it....
  20. I think Bush should investigate formula companies. I am going broke buying my boy formula. He is almost done with it though. Absolutely worth it.
  21. I used to not like Ortiz, but after seeing the way he trains and coached I have more respect. Shamrock is lazy in his coaching. I still can't get over Shamrock's swollen face in the last fight. Total smack down.
  22. If I remember right, pull altitude was about 5,000'. I was young, dumb, and bulletproof.
  23. I was jumping into a keg party when a thunderstorm came up. Lots of welts from the hail in freefall. Pull altitude was pain related. Lightning all around and the winds came up. I was 140lbs jumping a Cruislite backing up about 40mph. I thought I was going to get drug big time, but the canopy was so saturated that it just fell on my head. I am much more careful in questionable weather now...
  24. It has a lot to do with the topic. Some are saying that its just a fake gun at school. It is still the rules. I am saying it doesn't matter if it is a cap gun. You still get shot if you point it at a cop. You still get suspended at school.
