gasoline consumption has continued to grow despite rising prices so what makes you think rising prices will curb growth let alone reduce consumption? Obviously there is a price at which people will reduce consumption but I don't believe we are anywhere near that point. My guess is that the price where people will change habits is over $7 a gallon, maybe $8-10. Our society lives on credit, so what do they care? Plus, I HAVE to get to freaking work - that's the only way to pay for my gasoline that I use to get to work.... I've been looking locally for a small scooter (80 -90 mpg) but so far, no luck. (old fart rant here) Back in the 50s in elementary school, we were subject to atomic bomb attack drills, some in which we were actually told that enemy bombers were already enroute to vaporize us. All the school staff acted like we were all about to die and the only chance we had was to "duck and cover". Yep, there was the expected "crying for mommy" stuff but it did make us aware of what could happen and what, if anything, we could do to protect ourselvs. Guess what, we all lived over it. Yeah - it sounds like these new drill are about as effecting as 'duck and cover'. Actually, despite becoming fodder for comedians in the last twenty years, "Duck and Cover" is a good technique based on extensive research. Bicycle? The most effecient machine ever invented. I would probably die in short order trying to ride my bike to work. It's a long, dangerous route for a bike. Also, I need to dress in business attire, and cannot show up for work sweaty and smelly. There are no showers or facilities for changing clothes either. The mass transit system in my regios is non-existant, and for some reason, the major auto people CRUSHED all of the very successful electric cars they once leased, taking them off the market forever. But I do hope gas prices keep going up so that alternatives get traction. Although, THIS is incredibly troubling - I was reading about the very successful Rav4EV vehicle program. It could not continue since TEXACO bought the patent rights on the NiMH batteries needed to power the car, and will not allow the battery to be used any more, in any electric car. (they paid GM $30,000,000 for the patent) Once they had the patent, they sued Toyota and shut down the factory!!! That should be fucking criminal. It just makes my blood boil.
