Sorry - I don't buy it. If I call my doc with a cold or a headache, he will tell me to take some aspirin and call back if it doesn't go away in 5 days. So those people would not clog the doc offices. You need to read the thread. That is one good reason I gave for basic coverage for all - the clogged ERs. It's funny, and I have nothing to back this up, but I am willing to bet that the people bitching about paying for someone else's care pay more of that person's bill under the current system than they would if there was a system set up to provide free basic care to the needy. That ER visit for an emergency is many times more expensive than a short annual visit to the family doc. But if you are against universal (or basic free) health care, no bitching when you go to Emergency and there are 20 welfare kids with sniffles in front of you. $20 more in taxes, and that ER would be wide open for business. And as to the "should someone else pay your bill?" people, I say, in many cases, the answer is YES. You see, we all pay someone else's bill in many cases in our society. If you pay taxes, you pay the bills of someone else, and since we all pay taxes, we are all paying each other's bills. I pay for your kids education, you pay for my farm subsidies, and on and on. In a society, we need to decide what is important, and where that money to pay each other's bills should be directed. I happen to think that health is the very best place that money can go. You only live once - what is more important than life? For the cost of the Iraq war we could ALL have free health care - and NO raise in taxes. Are you under the impression that in the USA health care (especially major) is 'on demand'? I don't want to bust your bubble, but it is faaaaaar from it. I think that one way or the other, we end up paying for health care for the poor or less fortunate. Also, because they have no coverage, they clog emergency rooms when they go for high dollar care only when it becomes an emergency. They get treated, and cannot pay, or lose their home trying to pay. If they could see a doc, it would be cheaper, and keep them out of emergency. Therefore, I think enhanced care for the uninsured is a good investment. I'm not talking free breast enhancement - I'm talking yearly checkups and help paying for life threatening illness treatments.
