Sen McCain on foreign policy, defense policy, national security
vortexring replied to nerdgirl's topic in Speakers Corner
Like Kallend says, going into combat and experiencing good mates being killed isn't actually all that great. Seeing innocent civilians blown out their shoes isn't particularly fun either. In my experience it's the soldiers who haven't experienced combat that crave it. And 15 month tours? 'for it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "chuck 'im out, the brute!" But it's "saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot.' -

Yes it might. But will it stop or even deter psycho students with a desire to kill their student mates? 'for it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "chuck 'im out, the brute!" But it's "saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot.' -

So what is your argument then - a select few well trained students being armed? Or just the option of CCW being available? Either way, will it solve the problem? Will it solve the problem? It's the solution I'd rather debate. It's a solution which is important. Student CCW means fuck all. It won't stop mentalist students brassing up their classmates. It fucking won't. Hyperbole? 'for it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "chuck 'im out, the brute!" But it's "saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot.' -

So arming all the students is the solution? 'for it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "chuck 'im out, the brute!" But it's "saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot.' -

I was referring to the "arm them all" part. Your side of the argument isn't exactly supported by common sense, so I'd consider for a while before playing that card. Can you explain yourself a bit better please? I'm struggling to understand what you mean. 'for it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "chuck 'im out, the brute!" I'm puzzled over your reply. Numerous students go looking for such every year in America. 'for it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "chuck 'im out, the brute!" But it's "saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot.' -

COMMON SENSE. Shall I explain it to you mate? I never suspected you were lacking any but..... 'for it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "chuck 'im out, the brute!" But it's "saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot.' -
I'll happily be critical of numerous US op's - not simply through them generally fucking it up for themselves, or misplaced patriotism; but because they are rarely able to direct the main issues in their conflict. I'm sure you can therefore think of historical examples and even examples for today. 'for it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "chuck 'im out, the brute!" But it's "saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot.'

I won't argue that crime is not part of the real world. But it is a rather sad state for society where people wake up each morning thinking that they need to be carrying a gun with them everywhere they go. Personally I've never felt that I needed to walk around armed to the teeth ready to beat the other guy to the trigger for [insert whatever reason you want here]. As I said, it is a sad state for a society who thinks being armed to the teeth is a good thing. A society who is ready and willing to blow each other away for [insert your favorite threat here] just shows you how much people in this society care about each other. Just my two cents. PS: I watched both videos and Douva did a good job portraying himself as a responsible, rational person. Your post shows simple human decency and common sense. And yes, Scott did portray his argument very dignified and very well; despite it being without any sensible foundation for the long term common good. I think in essence we could all agree with the idea of students being able to defend themselves but it's not dealing with the common issue of continual students arming themselves then wasting their mates. Allow them all to be armed? I'd assume more shootings as a natural result. Like I've harped on about for ages, whether you allow students CCW or not isn't the issue whatsoever. Far fucking from it. You're no fun. I'm off for a bit - I'll post the link in a couple of days. C ya. 'for it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "chuck 'im out, the brute!" But it's "saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot.' -

I meant a couple over here when I was a kid. We'd kicked our ball onto their church roof and I suppose they were a bit irritated with some kids jumping about on their roof and smashing the odd skylight here and there. But more importantly we eventually got talking to them. Basically if I didn't accept Christ into my soul and get baptised I was going to hell... Shit! I'll never forget some massive bloke drawling in his Southern accent; 'Y'know where you're going when you die!?' 'Er, 6 foot under?' 'Nope.' '12 foot under?' 'Nope.' '10 foot under?' Then, slowly raising his hand; with my eyebrows following, he then pointed his hand and brought it viciously to point downwards; 'You're gawing to He-allll!!!!' 'for it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "chuck 'im out, the brute!" But it's "saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot.' -

Well, I wouldn't assume I'm more clever than you, but, er, thanks anyway. It made me laugh you saying that - it reminded me of my old horror of a Maths teacher; he used to threaten the placement of a metre stick through my apparantly empty head and then to drive me around the classroom like a motorbike. The fucker. Anyway, the main point I should make clear is in regard to this hero worship. What exactly makes them heroic? Perhaps it depends on what you regard as being heroic; perhaps McCain could fit the bill from his experience in Vietnam, or could he? Obama seems a nice enough chap but a hero? I suspect the majority of the people hadn't even heard of him a couple of years ago. So is it peoples unconcious desire to worship something, anything? I find that weird. But seeing as most people seem to be indulging themselves in all this hero worship perhaps it's me that's weird. -

That's what's wrong - and that's why it should idealistically change. Sure, they're just immoral as me or you; aren't they? And besides, who are these people who attend the rallies in hero worship of their leader? Freaks! 'for it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "chuck 'im out, the brute!" I'm surprised at how vicious certain political parties can be on their rivals. It seems morally wrong. But if it gets the votes, it doesn't matter if it's by fair means or foul does it? It should though. Still, by saying his middle name is Saddam Hussein is just slanderous. It's Satan. 'for it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "chuck 'im out, the brute!" But it's "saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot.' -
Haha - of course.

That's a bit mean. I am aware of some US citizens being asked to place a pin on Iraq for a TV show, and generally putting the pin onto countries like Australia and Argentina but hey ho. You chose to live there! 'for it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "chuck 'im out, the brute!" But it's "saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot.'

QuoteLast week I went to change the date of a flight I had booked through Travelocity. It was within 24 hours of the original booking, so no big penalty applied (only $7 according to their online calculator). I received an email notice of cancellation of the first flight from Travelocity almost immediately, confirming the $7 cancelation fee. Yesterday I received an email from Travelocity telling me that the trip was active, "have a nice flight". A check with my credit card account showed no credit for the cancelled trip, and the full charge for the new date. I called their "customer care" (sic) line and spent 45 minutes talking to a guy in Bangalore.... Should've ordered a torpedo mate.... Ah c'mon! This is horse shit!! You went out with the boys, started off reasonably well; got a few laughs; drank, I hope, at least around 12 pints; got a bit lairly, ended up doing a vulture impressionation in the last half hour prior to last orders, went for some scoff, then started a fight. Right? 'for it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "chuck 'im out, the brute!" But it's "saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot.'

Ooooh - that's going to hurt when she reads that - you'll be wishing yourself in Sangin armed with a feather duster instead. 'for it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "chuck 'im out, the brute!" But it's "saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot.' -

I almost said that's a 'fair comment' to your reply. But it isn't. Look at history - the Nazi regime wasn't spurious was it? So therefore, the political methology and reaction can't be thrown into the 'just spurious' bin can it? 'for it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "chuck 'im out, the brute!" Good for you - I'd recomend some Febreze. Why does a particular word I include in a sentence or phrase become the main point? Still believe the early Nazi party wasn't multiracial?
