“America’s Disappearing Industrial Base”
gearless_chris replied to nerdgirl's topic in Speakers Corner
I'm in manufacturing. We lost several hundred people a couple years ago when we got underbid by a foreign company. We had almost 600 union workers at one point now we have 65 union workers after we just laid off 25. We're expecting more lay offs when we come back from Christmas shutdown, but don't know exactly when. We had business lined up from a German plant, but the Euro dropped and we lost that. We're one of 3 company's that are in the running for a military contract, I hope that goes well for us. Now that we have a Democrat president, military spending will probably be cut also, so it may be temporary. I've heard of companies sending their employees to other countries for medical care so even doctors aren't safe from outsourcing. "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. Let me know your thoughts and sorry for a wordy post... You're doing fine for someone that learned English from skateboarders. Where are you jumping now? "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. My momma said I could be anything I wanted when I grew up, so I became an a$$hole.

Not all canopies are set up to use front risers from the factory. Some people like the quick toggle response. You will also move the flare point lower in your stroke, some people may have a problem with that. There is something wrong with your current brakeline, it's too short for you. Try watching your brakelines up by the cascades while you're doing a front riser turn, it'll be obvious if you're pulling the tail also, you'll see it. I shouldn't have to say it but I will anyway, clear your traffic before hand since you're not watching where you're going. "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. That's what I did with my Cobalt. Instead of tying the fingertraps we put some hand stitches in so the knot wouldn't catch the guide ring. The hand stitches hold fine and are easier to remove for fine tuning than bar tacking. They're also below the catseye so they don't see opening shock. Mine started bucking with 1 1/2 inches of front riser input, it was waaaaay off. I started with 4 inches longer than stock. I left enough extra in the finger traps that the ends almost touched. I finally ended up with almost 6 inches longer than stock. Good luck

I love my 150 too, but my W/L is just a tad higher than yours . "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. My momma said I could be anything I wanted when I grew up, so I became an a$$hole. -
No boost, the power to weight ratio of my Civic is about enough for me. 11lbs per 1hp, for comparison a C5 Corvette is about 9lbs per 1hp. Considering that the 90's Camaros (non SS) and Mustang GT's usually run in the mid 14's in the quarter-mile. Pretty damn good for stock, they can definitely be built to outrun any non-turbo and turboed Civic. At a higher cost of course, my Civic is just something cheap that I can tinker around with. My ex-uncle-in-law had a Yamaha blaster 4 wheeler with a 440 srx snowmobile engine in it. It had 106 HP and weighed 208 lbs. They clocked it at 118 MPH in 300 feet at the Dunes. It wasn't very reliable, but it was darn fast when it worked. "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. Its hard to take a TH400 car with a little power behind it on the street or track, especially with ladderbars. I can only imagine, i built a Supra with a TH400 for a customer once with a GT4202R. through a 6 speed that car should have made around 1400whp. SOB made 872 on the dyno... but good god all mighty it would get the fuck out of its own way. We raced many busas and streached 1000's with that car and only ever lost to a turbo'd GSXR-1000. That car broke EVERY SINGLE time we took it to the track. couldn't keep a rear end in it off the line, but couldn't launch out of boost because it would take till the 1/8th mile to spool. The rearend probably only survived because it didn't hook up, ever, not even on the 1/8 mile track at Avilla, IN. We only used the nitrous in 3rd. We never got a good E.T. out of it, 7.87 @ 92 MPH in the 1/8th but that was spinning a long way down the track. It ran even with a Buick that ran consistant 6.50's from half track to the end. We put slicks on it once but the wheel offset was wrong. We had a panhard bar in the rear and when the truck squatted the left rear tire hit the frame and he let off it. I would've liked to have tried a set of mickeys or anything better than the Pro Tracks. "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. Oh and also except for this one landing past weekend, I never had a problem, my landings were nearly perfect starting jump 6. Go figure. Huh! Go Figure! Things don't always go as planned? Stand up landings are over rated anyway, unless you're doing a demo. "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. I have a '94 S10 I swapped a V8 into. I have pics on Facebook. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=54682&id=538486493 It's got a .060 over 350, windage tray, crank scraper, Moroso 8 qt. pan, Comp cams extreme energy 4x4 cam 270 advertised duration, 305 heads that I ported, polished, put bigger valves in, and balanced the combustion chambers, Edelbrock performer rpm intake, 650 holley spreadbore, 2,600 rpm stall convertor in a th350, stock open rearend with 4.10 gears. It's a riot in town but not for long trips. I also had a '79 Trans Am with a very mild 403, 2.42 posi rear. It was great for interstate driving, not so much in town. The most badass thing I've driven was a truck our shop built for a radio promotion. It started out as a '39 chevy truck, they only thing left original was the tail light. It had a 350, big Crane cam, 7.5:1 compression, ported stock 2.02/1.60 heads, 175 hp N.O.S., oh yeah, and a Dyers 6-71 blower overdriven 6%. TH400 with an 8 inch convertor, Ford 9" with 4.86 gears, great big Pro-Trac 375 /60-15's, and ladderbars. It weighed 3,500 lbs. with driver. We goyt beat in a street race by an 1100 GSXR from a 60 MPH roll. The truck would only do 130 MPH so we didn't have a chance, but it was the only time we got beat, and we mostly went after street bikes. "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. Best way to make a monarch open soft?
gearless_chris replied to FallloutboyDAoC's topic in Gear and Rigging
I had a Monarch 215, I always psycho packed it. The one time I had it pro packed it blew up. Roll the 4 cells on each side in nice and tight. The pocket slider would probably be more foolproof than packing tricks. "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. I thought about that last night as I was going to bed, I knew I'd seen metal to metal before. And most of the time that connection point will have tension on it so it won't be flopping around chipping away at each other, right? "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. I think our student gear is set up like pic 2. It looks to me like you'll have to use the Rapide link since the bridle loop is too small for the D bag to fit through. Pic 3 looks okay to me, hopefully you'll get a rigger to answer. Do what Ronaldo said. This is my bridle extension that I made for Psycho packing. It took around 50 jumps to get my stand ups to out number the non stand ups. It stayed that way until I tore my ACL and I couldn't run anymore. Actually I can run, but the impact from the first step is bad for me. "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. AggieDave pretty much covered it all, but there is a possibilty of having a brake line break, or having a toggle come off the brake line, I've had both. In each case you won't be able to reach the offending steering line. If one brake is set, and the other is not, you will turn, regardless of why the one isn't set. Like Dave said, control check will more than likely stop the turn, what you do next is up to your training and experience level. At ISA and Skydive Fort Wayne, you would use emergency procedures with only 7 jumps. Is it there? Is it square? Is it landable? An emergency situation is not the time to be learning new tricks. I came up with a way to kind of cheat with my mindwarp. I mounted the camera to my bracket, put the RCA cable in the camera and used a coupler to hook the camera's RCA cable to a 12' RCA dubbing cable. This let me stand about 14' from the TV comfortably. Then I did what the111 said, except I was watching myself on TV so I could see exactly where the camera was pointed. Once I had it lined up the way I wanted I traced the bracket outline on the helmet with a sharpie, and finally drilled the holes to bolt it on. I ended up shimming the top out just a little before I molded the bracket to the helmet. I was only off 1/8" but the video was obviously crooked. My first 2 jumps with a camera.
gearless_chris replied to Tuna-Salad's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
That's one of the things you have to get used to. I had a tandem master that would pull that crap on me all the time. READY, SET, reposition himself in the door, GO... bastard. I watch for his left shoulder to come forward now. Then there was the time they had someone inside the Otter give the count. They didn't really think that one out much (two front floaters, one in the door, two rear floaters, plus me sharing my camera step with the rear-rear floater. Well anyway I like your little camera, but I would definitely listen to DSE about what to do. "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. That's not as bad as some home made contraptions. Getting the alignment right every time would be a pain. I'll see if I can draw up some pics of something better in case you still want to use that camera when you're really ready. I don't think the cheap camera is a bad way to go to start with. I bought a brand new HC30 when I started. I fell on it (getting in a truck) and the wide angle lens broke the front of the camera off. It still worked, until a riser strike took out the lanc port. You can also add on your list; People who have 500 jumps but 300 of them are hop-n-pops after dumping the last static line, 1,000's of jumps and all but 500 are tandems, 200 jumps at a 182 dz vs. 200 jumps at a turbine dz. It's guaranteed that there are people with fewer jumps than me that are better fliers. "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. Can you see your pilot chute under canopy?
gearless_chris replied to The_Don's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
When they say you can't see above and behind you they're talking about somone being above and behind your canopy, not the pilot chute. It's like driving down the highway in someones blind spot, where they can't see you with their mirrors. I just happen to have a picture. You'll notice you can't see Tony's head under they canopy below my feet, that means he can't see me either. He knew I was there because we could clearly see each other during the rest of the canopy flight, and he could see my shadow also. "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. or looking straight at the ground during landing. I was pretty much the opposite of him when I started, as far as landings go. My video almost never showed the ground because I didn't have the look with your eyes but video with your head thing down. It took a lot of effort for me to remember to tip my head down while flaring. "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. This dude won a free tandem on a radio giveaway. He wanted to take this flag that had the name of the radio station on one side, and the flag on the other. The tandem master only let him because this was his fifth jump, and he had already done one tandem with this tandem master recently. It flew like crap, that stupid flag had so much drag the TI could barely keep it stable. He said never again, not even with an experienced student.
