oh hell no... i don't do anything w/o doing a lot of reading, research and consulting. esp. something like this. these calves are in great shape. they've had a vet check them out, been dewormed, everything. i also spent a long time getting the farm back in top shape, ready to take livestock again. had to fix a bit of fence, make some minor building repair, etc. but now i'm ready!!!

jumpinfarmer and scott: I've got a cow barn that has a pen for them. outside that there's a bigger cow lot (the farm used to be an old dairy farm 20+ years ago)... and we have 16 acres. we also have a horse barn a large silo, a grain bin, an automatic waterer, etc. the friend of mine we bought them from, an experienced cattleman and farmer, has been helping out tremendously w/ advice and helping fix up my fences etc. Also, he cut and bailed my hay when we first bought this farm this summer. Our cow barn is FULL of hay. We're set. Plus, the pasture now has plenty of good growth now too so they won't really need much hay until winter I suppose. I miss Lee. And JP. And Chris. And...

As a girl that grew up eating grain fed beef (and the best in the world, IMHO, despite the few "angry ones" that went south recently) I'd say grain fed all the way!!! WAY yummier!!! But that's just me!

Something I didn't know... you can pay BIG BUCKS for certain "lines" of sperm or whatever they call the jizz you purchase for the insemination of your cows. It's quite a business. Lordie. it's no secret that my wife and I are staunch catholics. however, we don't sit down and say a rosary before every tough decision. true, we try to pray about difficult things, hoping and trusting that insight will come, but you know, sometimes it just doesn't. and sometimes, we either forget to pray or we just don't, for whatever reason. one thing i've learned to trust is my wife's gut. she has an incredible "woman's intuition." when we meet someone and she says "there's just something not right about" so-and-so, she is almost infallibly correct. And when it comes to making big decisions, if I've analyzed everything, written all the pros and cons out on paper and made a solid cost/benefit analysis of the situation and she just doesn't feel "right" about something, we don't do it. i've disobeyed her gut before, several times... and I've always been wrong. even when my choice looked so perfect on paper. i can't explain it. just one of those things. Not that I'm a cow expert, but you would want a Holstein for milking. People don't eat Holsteins. Some people have sex with them...but they're weird. Chris you can get milk from a gurnsey and a jersey too, or any cow for that matter, just a matter of how much production you want. and people DO eat holsteins... cattle farmers often sell the baby boy calves off to small time farmers like me b/c they don't have much use for them. the meat they produce is just fine and as calves go, they're cheaper to buy. lol! what a request! here's our plan... if we can raise these things w/o killing them before we WANT to kill them, we're getting maybe 6 or so next year. I don't EVER want to have a dairy cow, but we WILL likely breed, then I don't have to keep purchasing calves... they're about a dollar a pound and these were just under 500 pounds each. so then there WILL be some milk in them there udders and YES you can come pull those tits. . she's three years my senior. we hated each other growing up. now that i have kids, and she has discovered she can't, we have a relationship. life experiences has changed us, matured us, and we're actually friends. she and her husband are retired (she's 39, he's 49) and they're loaded. but they're not terribly happy. money can only buy so much. she really wants to have kids and all the money in the world hasn't helped them. it's sad really. i feel a little weird sometimes when she comes out to vsit, since we have 4 kids, wondering if it is hard for her or whatever, but she is always so good w/ them. she's coming out in a month and a half to see our new farm. i'm excited to see her.
