  1. I take issue with the whole idea that Democratic leadership has "forced" anyone into a life of poverty. It's arguable that the social safety net has made a life of poverty more survivable, but the extreme alternative is to just let poor people die. There needs to be a middle ground. Some Republicans think it is to completely dismantle the social safety net. I think we need some safety net, but more focus on job training and support for business growth (not the same as just cutting taxes). What's your opinion? - Dan G
  2. Yes, unbiased journaism at its finest. - Dan G
  3. Eustace has four digit D license number, so probably not the same guy you're thinking of. - Dan G
  4. Does your school have an athletic program? If so, do you automatically assume that any athlete that shows up in your classes is an idiot? I agree that on average, Division I athletes in the big money sports would not otherwise have been accepted into many schools. On the other hand, athletes in the rest of the sports have to work their way through just like everyone else. - Dan G
  5. Excellent reminder that there are some fates worse than catching Ebola. - Dan G
  6. No, we're both equally wrong. The difference is that I know I'm wrong. - Dan G
  7. Are you even capable of understanding the irony here? - Dan G
  8. And here are the twelve rules for conservatives: 1) You justify your beliefs about yourself by your status as a conservative, not your deeds. 2) You exempt yourself from your attacks on voters, i.e. Regulator, RonD, and rushmc using "low information voter" as an insult without irony. 3) What conservatives like should be mandatory and what they don’t like should be banned. 4) The past is always superior to the present. 5) Conservatism is a jealous god and no other God may come before it. 6) Conservatives believe in contempt for thought. 7) Intentions are much more important than results. 8) The only real sins are helping liberalism or harming conservatism. 9) All solutions must be market oriented. 10) You must be absolutely close minded. 11) Faith is more important than logic. 12) Tribal affiliation is more important than individual action. - Dan G
  9. Can't be too dangerous, there are people walking around in the background totally unprotected. - Dan G
  10. I think what remwa is getting at is that you seem unlikely to agree with many of the main tenets of the Libertarian Party, especially keeping religion out of government, and legalization of drugs. - Dan G
  11. Have you ever voted for a Libertarian candidate? - Dan G
  12. Which 3 or 4 of those is ever going to be done by a rural elderly person, or even urban elderly person? - Dan G
  13. Banks do not require ID to deposit a check. I've used my ID three times in the last month, all because I went on vacation. Twice at the airport, to and from, and once to check into a hotel. If I hadn't gone on vacation, I would not have needed ID at all. Otherwise, that thing stays in my wallet. And more importantly, absentee ballots, which are the actual fraud your much quoted study talks about, would not be affected by voter ID laws. - Dan G
  14. The "myth" is not necessarily that white cops kill black kids often. The "myth" is that when a white cop kills a black kid, the department covers it up and he doesn't get prosecuted for it. So far that "myth" seems to be holding true in a number of recent high profile cases, including Ferguson. - Dan G
  15. It sounds like you are saying that all electronic records, by dint of their being electronic and not physical, should be outside the scope of warrants. I think that's a bit extreme. If I write out a to-do list on how I'm going to kill my wife, it should enjoy the same status whether it is on paper, or on my phone. The police should require a warrant to access it, but I can't be forced to read it to them if I wrote it in code. - Dan G
  16. How are the customers supposed to assess econsystem damage that happens 100s of miles downstream? That's what governments are for. To keep the rights of some from infringing on the rights of others. - Dan G
  17. I'd rather have as many freedoms as possible instead of living in a police state in order to protect my loved ones from irrational fears. They feel the same way. - Dan G
  18. I can't believe you're seriously in favor of the government tracking all of our movements just in case we happen to travel through a disease prone area. Maybe you'd be more comfortable if everyone had to get government approval for any travel outside their state of residence. - Dan G
  19. To be fair, it's not a particularly good rant. - Dan G
  20. I'm confused by this thread. How is anyone going to pin this on Obama? - Dan G
  21. Wow, from the master that's high praise. If you don't like that, how about this: Your study says there was a sharp uptick in hires six months after the unemployment extension ended. And the conclusion they come up with is that welfare is bad? Weak sauce. - Dan G
  22. Yep. The New Deal: way worse than the Nazis. - Dan G
  23. There was a story on NPR recently about some UK citizens who went to Syria to fight against Assad and got absorbed into ISIL. One day ISIL basically showed up and said, "You guys are with us now. Got a problem with that?" Now they are afraid of trying to leave ISIL because they like having their heads attacked to their bodies. What do you do with people who went to fight Assad, but not fight for ISIL? Remember, Assad used to be the enemy. - Dan G
