Without a background check requirement it is only illegal for the purchaser. We've already established that person is a criminal or insane, so they probably don't care that it is illegal. It is perfectly legal for the seller. If it were not legal, those people who strive to be law abiding wouldn't sell a gun to someone who shouldn't have one. Yes, that's a short period of time when talking about measuring the effect of changing laws. - Dan G

I love it. If the report had slammed Hillary, you would have touted the hard work, dedication, and accuracy of the committee. Because it is a more moderate indictment, it must be flawed. Confirmation bias in action. - Dan G

I agree the magazine size limit is stupid. You can reload a modern weapon so fast that it doesn't really matter. That's all laws can do. Make things legal or illegal. Saying that criminals won't obey the law anyway is a tautology. Following that logic, there should be no laws at all. Making background checks universal, however, will make people think twice about selling to someone they don't know. Right now I can privately sell a gun to anyone I want. If they are a criminal or a crazy person, I can sell them that gun totally legally. It is illegal for them to own it, but it is legal for me to sell it. If there were legal repercussions for the seller in an illegal transaction, it is logical to assume that some undesirable transactions will be stopped. You're said a few times that the law is Colorado is ineffective because there have been no arrests. The lack of arrests over a short period is not an indication of effectiveness. If the use of illegally obtained guns goes down in the long term, that would show the effectiveness of a background check law. - Dan G

I agree they will restrict our rights. My problem is that if we use the standard that no restriction on any rights is allowable, then what are we talking for? Speed limits restrict my right to freedom of movement. Are speed limits unallowable? Reasonable restrictions are not unconstitutional. I personally think most of the suggestions from kallend are reasonable and constitutional. Do you disagree? The Constitution says we have the right to keep and bear arms. It doesn't say you have the right to do that everywhere. That's why I would limit the training requirement to those who wanted to carry in public spaces. What is your opinion on that? - Dan G

I'm sorry for my poor wording. I should have said "You never explained how those proposals would violate anyone's constitutional rights." Every law limits something. It the laws that violate our rights that are unconstitutional. I don't think, and the Supreme Court agrees, that limiting the right to bear arms in reasonable ways is unconstitutional. Do you think a free training class required every two years to carry outside of your property is unconstitutional? I'm not sure. I think it is a good idea, but I don't know if it would pass muster. - Dan G

You never explained how those proposals would limit anyone's constitutional rights. Saying they would be ineffective is not answering that question. - Dan G

Education unnecessary if you're waiting for rapture
DanG replied to kallend's topic in Speakers Corner
What's more likely: kallend has to explain the rapture to his colleagues, or dumb parents in Texas will have to explain to their 18 year old children why they can't get a job because they never bother learning to read or add? - Dan G -
How is requiring a background check for private transfers restricting anyone's right to keep and bear arms? - Dan G

1. That would be up to Congress. Pick any state, really, it doesn't matter. 2. That's your opinion. If it in completely unenforcable, then it won't result in the loss of any rights. It will, however, make it harder for criminals and the insane to buy guns. Not impossible, just harder. Even if enforced it would not infringe on anyone's rights. 3. I'm not sure what he meant. I assume it meant keeping a record of purchases. Again, can you explain why that would infringe on anyone's right to own firearms? 4. One of the gun lobby's arguments is that criminals can still get guns through the black market. If reporting your gun being stolen was mandatory, then tracking how guns are moving through the black market might be possible. But again, how would this infringe on anyone's right to own and bear arms? 5. What if the classes were free and only required if you were going to carry outside your property? Our rights enumerated in the Constitution are not absolute. The right to free speech has practical limits. There is no reason I see that these proposed measures would not be considered reasonable limits on the right to bear arms. - Dan G

What is draconian about those measures? What freedoms will people lose if those are implemented? How are those measures unconstitutional? - Dan G

It was a clickbait article. That doesn't mean that it means anything. Only people who are completely ignorant of how group investment plans work would find it interesting at all. Most people are completely ignorant of most things. - Dan G

Did you jump it? - Dan G

Shortly after my wife started jumping she had a regular doctor's appointment. After getting undressed he said, "You know I have to report this." It took her quite a while to convince the doctor that she acquired the bruising in her groin area from skydiving. - Dan G

So? Do you think individual pensioners get to pick the investment strategy of their plan? - Dan G

But Wendy, the social benefits of domesticating the horse are incalculable! Think of all the benefits to commerce, transportation, defense, healthcare, you name it! And now all these alarmists want to spend money on cars. Ridiculous. - Dan G

A jump fail / compensating for disability
DanG replied to GuyEgan77's topic in Skydivers with Disabilities
I think the tunnel might be a good place to work out your issues. I'm not sure what your experience was, but it is vital that you talk to the tunnel instructor before your flights and explain what your goals are. If they think you are just a tunnel tourist you won't get the training you need. I would recommend arranging some one on one coaching at a tunnel with an experienced coach. You'll get a lot more feedback than if you're lumped in with a big group of flyers. That being said, failing early AFF levels is no indication of eventual skill. Don't give up. There are lots of people who struggled at first and went on to be successful skydivers. - Dan G -
Today is the Brexit vote. We have lots of bets going, what do you think?
DanG replied to ibx's topic in Speakers Corner
Great wisdom from someone who, two weeks ago, didn't even know what Brexit was. - Dan G -
If you think that has any relevance to the climate change debate, you are sorely misunderstanding the issue. No one is saying that fossil fuels are inherently evil. What most people and just about all scientists are saying is that fossil fuels have negatives as well as positives. Since we now have, or soon will have, the technology to produce power with fewer negatives, we need to switch away from fossil fuels. I know in your simplistic world the environmental argument is just "carbon bad!" and if you can point out benefits of fossil fuels then you've won the argument. You haven't won the argument because you're arguing against a position that no one else is arguing for. - Dan G

That hasn't been my experience at all. I've yet to meet anyone who is a true Hillary supporter. My wife (who is self-described as slightly to the left of Karl Marx) doesn't like Hillary. I'm much more of a centrist (SC translation: liberal commie scum) and I don't like Hillary either. Both of us are going to vote for her because Trump is an affront to everything that America stands for. I wish I could vote for a third party, but the possibility of Trump winning my state is non-zero so I can't do anything that might help that happen. - Dan G -
I suggest you do the same. You started the thread with a chip on your shoulder. Maybe a beer with loosen that chip a little. - Dan G
