I'm not very familiar with rattlesnakes, but I did see an interesting documentary once (Yes I know, armchair expert). Anyway the guy was saying that the majority of all rattlesnake bites are from people trying to pick them up (sounds like a fucking dense thing to do but then what do I know). Apparently they try to avoid biting because it is safer to try to get away than to bite. He demonstrated this by wearing thick leg coverings and stepping near, and on numerous rattlers. In only one case did a rattler bite when stepped on. In most cases they just rattled like nuts. He had a mechanical arm, and proceeded to poke at them with it and they never seemed to bite until the hand closed around them and started to pick them up. He also pointed out that most rattlers cannot bite above knee level (just taking his word on this ) and yet the majority of bites are on the arm or hand. Most victims apparently claim they were doing nothing and were bitten on the arm. When confronted with the limittations of a rattler most people then claimed they were bending down to pick something else up and accidentally touched it. If true, I once again am staggered to think that these people are part of the same species can put people on the moon. I am not sure that, hidden sinister motives disguised as honourable intentions is a uniquely right wing thing. For example when dealing with race relations, I have on numerous occasions had heated debates with visible minorities about policies, ranging from, affirmative action, hate crimes legislation, reverse discrimination .... etc. I have often found that while they start with moderate tones, if you start cornering them on an issue they will respond with a comment to the effect of "Oh white people are just..........". When suggesting how a certain policy may be unfair to white people I have frequently received responses like " White people have had it too easy, and need to be knocked off their high horse" or "Good, it will show white people what it is like". I have ran across many left wingers with a strong anti-white attitude who have demonstrated that they harbour intense dislike towards white people and cannot wait to see whites get their comeuppance. I am not trying to be difficult, but I felt compelled to point out that there are also people clinging to the left wing and hiding their own hatreds behind more moderate left wing ideology. It will not surprise me for that matter if this post induces some people to play the race card on me. I do realize that these people represent a small proportion of the left wing (as do white racists who hide behind moderate right wing ideology), but they do exist also. I do agree that many people have alterior motives for their political views (while claiming more socially acceptable motives) however I have seen that in both the left and right. What don't you get? Don't you realize that it is the obligation of all non special interest group members to accomodate people who are members of special interest groups regardless of the cost? But, but, the government knows what is best for us, and they forbid firearms in National Parks and Forests. I guess they care more about the bears than about 6-year-old girls. I am generally pretty pro-gun (particularly when dealing with street thugs) however, the risk of having people shooting in the bush when children are there might concern me more than bears being in the same bush as kids. I usually get really drunk when I am bitter about something. It never solves anything and I pay for it the next day, but it just seems so right at the time. I does help however to drink a few a day when I am going through a stressfull period in my life. Not drunk just 3-6 in the evening to help me get to sleep. I think in many state/provincial parks guns are banned for good reason. If people were allowed to carry guns they could simply hunt bear and cry self defence when they bag one. Truthfully I love camping and have spent lots of time in bear country and never had a problem. I have seen the tail end of a few black bears who spotted me first and took off, and I have never seen a grizzly. Never felt a need to carry a gun while backpacking. I think the risk is overstated. Common sense will prevent occurences with bears. They are not interested in confrontation. It is much riskier walking around in a big city than walking in bear country.
