I have had sinus surgery. That worked great for years. Then I had tubes put in (I was in my 50s) a few years back. That worked great for two seasons, but I'm also a scuba diver and I never thought of how that affected me until i stuck my head underwater. YIKES! After a few years the tubes fell out and I haven't problems since. I have no clue why, but I'm counting my blessings. steveOrino

Well I found 30+ freefall shots better than 15+ for my tandems. steveOrino

Well spank me silly! I didn't look, just figured it had to be a troll. steveOrino

How to TOTALLY screw the pooch on Level 1:
steveorino replied to KevinP's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I was wondering myself why he didn't release one hand, right himself and then flip the student as I was taught. Good example how the situation only gets worse if you delay doing what you were taught to do. steveOrino -
I alway do on AFF, in my photo Stooby doesn't have one because the Protec broke on jump run and he gave the student his. On Tandems .... I do except in hot July/August days. steveOrino

Yeah, I have been punched in the kisser before. Now I just duck! steveOrino

Yeah, after think about digging in tray and pulling out lines, I'm rethinking my handcam. I think I prolly will stick with the GoPro head mount, unless I'm not wearing a helmet .... oh, boy, here we go again! steveOrino

Yes, it likely would. But to even consider that premise you need to already make the assumption that he exists. So to use the idea that "God exists because we can't understand his plans and his nature" is no different than to say "Faeries exist because we can't understand the magical world". It just doesn't really solve anything. Oh, I agree it is a terrible argument for God, but just wanted to see your take. Thanks for the input! steveOrino

Okay, i don't. seems useless to me but you do bring up a point I'd like your opinion on .... (see below) IF there was a God who created the universe and all that was in it, wouldn't human understanding pale to His? Not trying to debate nor am I offering this as a last resort argument, just wanted your input to the question if you don't mind. thanks in advance! steveOrino

That is my favorite canopy. I personally don't like jumping larger tandems all day as the flare gets harder as the day goes on. steveOrino

Ok Dave, thanks for being more civil. It goes a lot farther with me than asking "who am I trying to impress ..." You made some good points, and I have not thought out me flipping sides (I have done that) and the student grabbing my handcam (They haven't done that but they sure have grabbed my alti before) Reaching into the pack tray isn't something I have had to do in my first 100 AFFs, but I can see where it may present a problem. While I think if forced the velcro would release the camera, I can see where there is a possibility where it might not. I think I may just keep the GoPro on the head.. That being said, I'm glad I got away with it one time because the still shot was awesome. Thanks for the input! steveOrino

So what you are saying there are two different rules in regards to students safety. A tandem doesn't get same "remove as much risk as possible" as the AFF? Even though the handcam could pose a possible risk to the tandem's safety because it could possibly hinder the TI's ability to perform in every given situation, it is ok. But with the AFF student it isn't? steveOrino
-
So you are saying there is no possible situation where a handcam would be a hinderance to a TI who had a malfunction? steveOrino
-
What is your opinion of TIs with hand cams? steveOrino

Thanks for the input steveOrino

What bothers me most about this is not the assumptions and opinions, lord knows there are plenty of people ready and willing to give it, but I was hoping to have more of a dialogue from others who had experienced such issues on an AFF jump and what they did. No such luck, just a lot of "snag nazis" (love that new term0, and others so willing to throw a fellow AFFI under the bus w/o a shred of personal knowledge about what actually took place. steveOrino

Not very professional of you to review this in public with your student and expose them to the out loud comments from experienced skydivers. Had you reviewed this and provided the positive feed back and instruction with an additional comment as to how other skydivers will react when viewing the jump video, your student would 1.Be educated on the subject & 2. he would know what to expect and how to react to others reactions. 3. you most likely wouldn't be wondering if he is coming back or not. Sometimes instructors are a dz's own worst enemy by doing such things. debrief is to be conducted in private first :the walk and talk. ie. as in walk away from everyone else. We did debrief in private. After he knew what was on the video he wanted the DVD shown in the lounge. Of course you only assumed different. Jumped to conclusion w/o all the facts ... go figure. steveOrino
-
He was a little clueless to what exactly went wrong, but he knew something did. We explained it to him and when heard the other skydivers screaming while watching the video he may have gotten even more spooked. Might have been better to debrief in private? Did we say we debriefed in public? We debriefed in private. HE wanted his DVD played in the lounge. Hard to control what a dozen skydivers will do after the beer light has gone on. steveOrino

How can you see that in that picture????? It was anything but sloppy. It was a hard throw, but he did release the pc late so it went forward. I have no problem taking him on the next level. steveOrino
-
Well, we explained the "subtle" difference between throwing forward vs the correct throw we taught him. He was stable for most of the skydive, and pulled for himself; so we passed him. We will dirt dive that throw a lot IF he comes back. steveOrino

+1 made my day! steveOrino

I think you have made a thoughtful choice for you and yourself. Sound like a true professional guy. I appreciate your input! As I said, I do wear a GoPro on helmet IF there ISN'T outside video. steveOrino
-
SIMPLE ... I wear two gloves, I simply put the camera on my other hand when I'm main-side. I also have a camera I can wear for video on my helmet if there isn't outside video. IF, a big IF ... it is a good student I can free hand and the 170 degree angle gets some shots worth keeping. Along with others in the plane, etc. steveOrino
