They both had scholarship offers, my daughter and her daughter. Her daughter got in free of charge to her. My daughter had to pay because I worked hard. The world will be a better place when I'm a pyschologist. Why don't YOU pay for that. I mean I am by borrowing $40,000 dollars, but hey, why not have someone else pay? steveOrino

No doubt, but are there only those two choices? steveOrino

Mine too in that Tevye (Fiddler on the Roof) sort of way. But it is more than that. Prayer should be a process that begins to open your mind up to the will of God as well. steveOrino

So you expect every prayer to be answered with a yes? A good father doesn't do that. I had to delay or deny more request than answer positively when raising 4 kids. They thank me now as they are in their 20s steveOrino
-
There are no "unanswered" prayers unless you assume every prayer must be answered with a "yes." "Some of God's greatest gifts are unaswered prayers" -- the great theologion, Garth Brooks steveOrino

To say prayer is simply wishing is either condscending or woefully uniformed of what prayer is. Your example indicates to me the latter That doesn't surprise me as most Christians are clueless because of so much bad teaching, it is no wonder an atheist doesn't get it. steveOrino

And THAT is the problem with socialized medicine. It sucks for the middle and upper class. It is like when I took my daughter to interview at colleges 9 years ago. I was told I'd have to pay for most of her education. Why? Because I worked my butt off on three jobs and made about $60,000. The other student there whose had no dad, because mom was never married. She had 3 kids by 3 different sperm donors. She didn't work, but lived on welfare. Her daughter got a 100% complete free ride, room, board, books , and meals for $0. Guess who ultimately paid for her free ride? I did. I had to pay for my daughter and her daughter because i worked my butt off. /rant steveOrino

There are many who would disagree that prayer is simply "wishing them away" In fact, that is a very childlike belief. Do not always be so condesending about things (spirituality) that you have no connection with. steveOrino

I agree my parent's Christian heritage played a BIG part on what I learned. And yes, our culture does have a big sway about how we are raised. I thought you were speaking how we feel now as adults. steveOrino

To those who have none, it would be welcomed. I'd welcome it because one of my sons has hard time paying for health insurance. It is a lot of money out of his pocket and he doesn't see the results as he is young and healthy. On the other hand, I can afford private health insurance and I'd rather have it. I'm tired of the HMOs. IMHO they are an example of what universal health insurance would be like in the US. Your Dr. has to follow too many insurance "guidelines" rather than do what is best for you. So my answer? Let those who want it pay taxes for it. For those who prefer private insurance, let them opt out. I feel the same way about social security BTW. steveOrino

Unfortunately, many Christians obtain what they believe about hell from sources outside the Bible such as Dante's Inferno, and Milton's Paradise Lost. either directly or indirectly from pastors/teachers steveOrino

Check out this link: http://www.biblegateway.com/quicksearch/?quicksearch=hell&qs_version=31 Look at the links at the bottom as well -- they show other words that signify the essence of hell. steveOrino

I won't speak for Bill, but I can say with certainty, while some may feel the pressure to be religous from their social setting. It has neglible factor in my life now. steveOrino

There has been simlar studies done about spirituality. EDITED TO ADD: Oops I see you said that to some degree ... sorry, I must read slower. steveOrino

How can I make a career out of skydiving?
steveorino replied to skyfree's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Good reply. Define rich. -
Dude, I had one of those when I lost vision in my left eye. I've been a Sub lock chamber at SCUBA school in SF, and a lot of cramped small places, and I never thought I had claustrophobia, but I was wrong! Freaked me out! I counted the whole time! Unless I'm dying, no more MRIs for me -- at least not the type that makes you feel like a cigar being inserted into a case. /thread drift steveOrino

Do I believe in hell? Yes, if Hell is defined as separation from God whom I rejected on earth. If I didn't want Him into my earthly existance why would I want to spend eternity with Him? For clarification: I do desire a relationship with God and I have not rejected His influence on my life. Therefore, while I believe in Hell, I do not fear it personally. steveOrino

If you guys are saying you can measure love please let me know. After 32+ years my wife occaisionally asks what I believe is a dumb question, "Do you still love me?" If I could give her the results that say emphatically I love her, maybe that would help. But on the other hand she is a woman ... steveOrino

I guess your own personality dictates how you respond. I'm thinking an atheist could respond, "No, I don't believe in God." Rather they chose condescension. It would be the same if a Christian responded to an atheist, "You're gonna burn in hell for eternity." Do some respond that way? Sure, but that type of response indicates to me they purchased the "Jesus, get me outta hell free card" rather than becoming a disciple that follow his teachings. steveOrino

I don't see what the big problem is with using the scientific method to try and figure out if something exists or not. I'm just not convinced about the existence of things that are indistinguishable from non-existant things. If science can help me decide if something exists, what's wrong with using it? As good as the scientific method is you wouldn't use it as proof about philosophy or art. Spirituality and religion cannot be subjugated to the same spere as science. Now, when you talk of creationism, maybe. Miracles? Not really. The definition of the miracle itself implies it different than the normal occurance. For instance. My wife drove over my son when he was 18 months old with a 1969 (land yacht) Buick. I was told he was killed. He should have been. I saw the sleeper with tire tracks across it. Yet, the boy had ZERO injuries. Nothing, nada, zip. It defied scientific logic. What is the explanation? Science doesn't have one. My faith points to God. steveOrino

nothing will, it's their "faith" and they feel just as strongly about it And I'm okay with that. However, look at this thread as an example. The question was "Do you believe in God?" Some said yes, some said no, some even had fun with it, but it didn't take long before an atheist insults a christian for their belief. I'm not crying persecution ... good lord, Christians ARE NOT persecuted in THIS country. I simply wonder aloud why that is the method of debate they choose. steveOrino

Why would he care what we think or do at all? Yet you think he does... Why indeed. What possible reasons could there be? steveOrino
-
That is what I attempt to do, but I don't seem to stop those who would like to insinuate I'm illogical. steveOrino
-
Because faith is required in religion. Religion is not a science. To treat it as such is an attempt to create a straw man for your own beliefs. steveOrino
