bite/tongue/blow switch for Canon 400D?
steveorino replied to steveorino's topic in Photography and Video
I assumed the XTi had different plugs than my old Rebel. Evidently my conceptus will work on the XTi 400D just fine. Thanks everyone! -
yeah, right! steveOrino

I tried that with the wife -- she said she'd call me by my previous "title" ... bachelor! Personally, I have always thought titles were "much to do about nothing" When I pastored people would always ask, what should we call you? Reverend Phelps? Pastor Steve? My standard reply, "Steve will do just fine!" steveOrino

Where do you buy them? Does Conceptus make them with that plug? Conceptus only shows their stereo plug on their website. steveOrino -
I'm way too heavy to fly that position on most tandems/AFFs (I weigh 225#) but I do sit fly -- then back fly at deployment. I simply lean back from belly to sit -- then lean farther back to back - and finally either roll over or continue to flip back on belly for my deployment. steveOrino

I lost most of the vision in my left eye a few years back (central vein occlusion -- idiopatic) My first jump after the loss was a hard landing on my butt. After that I "two staged" flared for a while. Meaning I flared a little higher than normal. If my depth perception was okay I'd ride out the flare, if I was a little high I'd let up and flare again. Also, I'd talk to your instructors. There would be no shame in going back on radio to rebuild your confience. NOTE: If you plan on doing the "two stage" flare thing I'd talk to an instructor first. It was my instructor who told me about the two staged flare and he helped me though it. It only took about 5-6 jumps before I learned to compensate for my loss of vision. steveOrino

Rubbing a crayon across a paper over a granite stone can be damaging?? How so? On the other hand, in the day of digital camera phones -- LM's alternative sounds very doable steveOrino

I did it with some youth back when I was a Youth Pastor in Alaska. Get permission from the cemetary first. Be respectful (be quiet and walk around graves as much as you can) I saw some interesting stuff. The saddest was a 16 year old's poem about how Leukemia sucked. steveOrino

You must be a feather then ... I'll remember that if I ever pooch the exit ... the wind did it! steveOrino -

Is that the way your instructor described it? I don't think so ... steveOrino -
Maybe because you mispelled "Nazis" steveOrino

This will get me flamed no doubt, but it is a slow day here at work. So, here goes: Are you a chick? He apologized. So he didn't apologize before you told him you were upset. If he apologized and I assume you guys worked out the future deployments, why the panties in a wad now? Some guys are way too sensitive! steveOrino

What the fuck happened to never leave a man down.
steveorino replied to Sockpuppet's topic in Speakers Corner
I can't watch streaming video from school, but it is the correct thing to get out of the kill zone, not make an Alamo stand when it is not necessary. Then produce a counter attack. On a similar note. One thing I appreciated about Special Forces as oppose to other elite units like Rangers & Marines. This "leave no man behind" stuff was not taken to the illogical extreme. Meaning, while every effort would be taken to extract the wounded and trapped, there would not be the sacrifice of life to extract dead bodies. Why the difference? It is my opinion that SF guys are typically, more experienced, older and have the bigger picture in mind. "We will not leave you behind" is a motivation young, lesser experienced operators need. Also SF were taught to E&E on their own. steveOrino -
Steve, sorry to hear about your dog's passing. Its been six years since my dog was killed and I miss him all the time! I enjoyed drawing a caricature of your dog too! steveOrino

Actually, they were pretty bland by my present taste: 1) parents to small child: "Son, we are gettinga divorce, and you're going to live with our lawyer because he is the only one who can afford to raise you now." 2) Weatherman: "Tomorrow's forecast calls for partly cloudy with a 30% chance of rain and a 50% chance I'm right." See, I told ya -- rather lame. Here are some from other magazines. I think they are funny. http://www.steve-phelps.com/cartoon/toon1.html steveOrino

Would you do a tandem with your wife as a passenger ?
steveorino replied to vidiot's topic in Instructors
I videoed the wife on my 1000th (it made Parachutist). She is terrified of heights but she did it. She said she'd go with me on my 2000th. -

For all the people that like to bash Bush and Iraq
steveorino replied to freeflir29's topic in Speakers Corner
One more lesson from Viet Nam. Like Viet Nam, there are no easy answers and they is plenty of blame and finger pointing to go around. When the realization finally came that Viet Nam was not going to end (like the Iraqis, the Vietnamese have been fighting for centuries) the US pulled out and let them have at it. Thirty years later it still looks like it was the right thing to do for American interest. So, I say, pull out. Put the troops in Afghanistan, get Bin Laden, then send everyone home. Hopefully then we can learn from mistakes made in places like Korea, Viet Nam, and now Iraq. BTW. my son-in-law is over there now (third time) and I truly support you guys, but that is my opinion. steveOrino -
Let me shoot it to you straight. Stop whining. I work three jobs (not including doing tandems and video every weekend) Plus I'm in grad school. I have a mortgage, car payments, school loans, insurance, support of family, etc. Does my wife work, yes. However, back in the day (80-90s) I worked three jobs so my wife could stay home and take care of four small kids. Plus I went to college and grad school. So, my advice, is stop making excuses and get creative. For example. When I was in my 30s I needed more money to support the family. I started drawing cartoons and submitting to magazines. It took a year or so to make a dent, but in the long run I sold cartoons to Good Housekeeping, Better Homes & Gardens, TV Guide, Saturaday Evening Post, National Enquirer, Soap Opera Digest, Ebony and about 100 other smaller magazines on a regular basis. That led to illustrating books. A DZ should be a "No whine zone" steveOrino

Yeah, you can subtarct the A numbers from year to year and get that, and you can get the total # of jumps from USPA, but how many of those totals are made by students? steveOrino
