This article seems pretty honest: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/13/science/13gore.html?ei=5090&en=2df9d6e7a5aa6ed6&ex=1331438400&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss&pagewanted=print

Let the record show that ncclimber believes child exploitation should NOT be prevented since Mark Foley was a hypocrite. What a load of crap.

Maybe I'm poor, and can't afford to give. As to selfishness - nobody is more selfish than a millionaire whining for a bigger tax cut. NOBODY. All whiny millionaires should be hung from the rafters by their nutsack. As to support for politicians, I should have said "politicians and activist groups." I see - Someone else should be forced to take on a problem that's important to you. Seems reasonable.
-
Nope. If I did nothing but whinge about it I would be a hypocrite, but again it would not impact the rightness or wrongness of my position. That stands or falls on it's own merit. Kind of like Mark Foley's "Child Modeling Exploitation prevention Act of 2002".

A minor difference here is how fictional the story reads. Quotes spoken between the suspects during the crime? Sensationalistic descriptions of torture with spooky hints of worse? This journalist could be a reject from the Weekly World News. And my suspicion from the cheese factor is the whole thing is either made up or blown out of proportion. But nonetheless we have people chanting for blud blud blud with exclamation points. Does this article present a less gruesome story? http://www.spokesmanreview.com/local/story.asp?ID=178893 Is there anything to refute about the article? Or is this just more sniping?

And they execute record numbers of innocent people as a result. Cite? Unfortunately, juries sometimes get it wrong, and some innocent people are wrongly convicted of crimes. This happens in every state. As a result, logically, any state that executes any significant number of people with regularity will likely execute some innocent people. Thus, it also stands to reason that a state which executes a record number of people will probably also wind up executing a record number of innocent people. This - "they execute record numbers of innocent people" is a statement of fact, not a statistical hypothesis.

Supporting politicians who will help solve some of them - ie. raise taxes on the rich, work to stop exploitation of third world countries by the West, etc. Attempting to change minds and attitudes when possible. Anything else I chose to do is my business only. Which politicians do you support, who are working "to stop exploitation of third world countries by the West"? I ask what people are doing because it's been my experience (admittedly a small sampling) that the people who think others (i.e. "the rich) should be forced to contribute more are typically pretty selfish when it comes to their own contributions. Talk is cheap. Walking your talk is quite different.

You're being over-sensitive. Another personal insult? And what was "Ankle biter"? A fitting label? Judging from Post #53, it was a personal attack meriting a warning from a moderator. I know. I was mortified... humiliated... shamed to no end. I just wanted to cry. Oddly enough, I think that if I had described his posts as ankle-biting, it would have passed unnoticed.

You can ask as many times as you want. My actions have nothing to do with the validity of my position. How about your lack of actions? Is this important enough that you'll take action to help remedy the problem? Or is this just something to whinge and moan about, but not worthy of anything more?

Sweetgum trees should be renamed Devil-spawn. I have a massive one in my backyard. Every winter I fill up about six large leaf bags of those nasty motherfucking gumballs. Grrrr Sorry about the sidetrack. Please continue with "Department heads instruct scientists to keep formal meetings On Topic"... er... um... I mean "Fascist regime squashes free speech in scientific community".

Zimbabwe isn't a great example, but in varying degrees, and especially in central africa, the colonial story is one of systematic rape and pillage followed eventually by half arsed attempts to hand over power in an ordered way while buggering off and wiping our hands of the whole deal. White guilt. I'll ask again - What are you doing to remedy these problems?
-
I call BULLSHIT! What specifically are you talking about?
-
First of all, show me where I have ever condemned the goal of creating a stable democracy in either Iraq or Afghanistan (never mind that in neither case was that the stated aim). Secondly, don't you think there is a slight difference between returning independance to a long held colony and invading a sovereign nation? Hence my question, what the fuck are you talking about? I think this post set off a bunch of people: It's the "let them have their country back... self determination... freedom... etc." and then when they completely fuck it up, it's somehow whitey's fault. It buys into that whole "white guilt" dynamic. I seem to recall a fair number of people supporting Mugabe's ouster of white farmers. More "let them have their country back". Now, many of those once productive farms are completely unproductive and, for some reason "it's our fault".

Yeah.... your objective posts always make compelling, irrefutable points.
-
Yeah! And while you're compiling those stats, how many of those studies have an odd number of words? How many of the authors call their mother at least once a week? How many have voted democrat? How many smoked marijuana in college? How many have hired undocumented aliens to babysit? HUH??? HOW MANY?!?!? Hey Ankle-biter. Where've you been? We've missed your petty pedantic sniping.

Majority is not the same as consensus. Just because you don't like the fact that a number of otherwise well-respect climate experts are speaking out against anthroponenic global warming, doesn't mean they aren't out there.
-
Of those 928 papers only 13 abstracts (less than 2%) explicitly endorsed what the author called the 'consensus view', regarding anthropogenic causes. I'm sold.
-
Of those 10,000+ peer-reviewed papers, how many claim that anthropogenic increases in CO2 are the primary reason for global warming?
-
Are you talking about simple climate change, which I doubt anyone refutes, or anthropogenic global warming?
-
Where do you get the 99% figure? Do you really believe it to be true? It's probably more like 99.9%. I believe it to be true, and it is true. The overwhelming majority of scientists agree that global warming is taking place. Keep making up numbers! also, where do you get the "overwhelming majority.." from? From Claude Allegre? Or is he one of those "morons" Zippo was talking about?
-
I was just pointing out that there is a difference between making unpopular claims and what some consider to be systematic murder. An argument can be made that the disservice the global warming deniers are doing mankind is equivalent to mass murder. The repercussions of ignoring global warming could POSSIBLY kill billions. How about we ban dissent in the scientific community? That should ensure that we get it right.
