should dz make tandem mandatory first jump?
jlmiracle replied to freeryde13's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
No, they are marketed to people who want to skydive. Alot if people I've encountered who want to learn to skydive are turned off by the 6+ hour ground school and they just don't have that much time to "waste". What people think they want isn't always what the know they want. Judy Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. -

That is one example. There are more. It does also work the other way though too. Had a guy that couldn't remember the dive flow, wouldn't arch very well on the ground but we practiced and practiced. I tried to simplify it and told him don't sweat it, I will prompt you, if you forget. We had the sweetest exit, and he didn't forget a thing, was altitude aware, relaxed and did an excellent job, but then again he never finished AFF after he got laid off and divorced. With the personal experiences I have had, I believe a Tandem is still the best way to introduce someone to skydiving. Reading bad students isn't all the easy. We had a student that was EXCELLENT on the ground. super relaxed, good body position (for the ground), and could do the dive flow in his sleep. Once he left the airplane - he lost his little mind. He dearched, kicked and flailed and never pulled. We tried doing a working tandem just where he would have to pull and he didn't. He really really wants to skydive (or that's what he keeps telling us), but its really not for him. Judy Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. -

Tandems are an excellent way to introduce skydiving to someone with both freefall and canopy ride. We loosely require (basicially if they insist on AFF that's what we do) Tandem. Here are a couple examples why I believe in the Tandem first. 1. Guy comes out insists on AFF. I tried to explain sensory overload and what not to him but he insisted on AFF. He completely brain locked through the whole skydive (JM's had to pull for him). The guy works in the same building I do. I saw him the next week and he said I'm really sorry I didn't listen to you, I understand now why you have people do a tandem first. He has never jumped again. 2. Macho man shows up, wants to start and graduate in 2 weeks. He sits through the ground school but is going to do a "working" Tandem first. They landed, I asked the guy what he thought and he just looked at me and said "I can't belive you people do this" and left - never to be seen again. What people THINK they want is not the same as KNOWING what they want. Judy Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. -
Quote One step up from the monkeys - Yes - this is an angry response and this is shot from the hip. Quote I'm with ya. I'm so pissed off right now, I don't think I would care if we made the whole f-ing country go naked. (still very very angry). BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- An al Qaeda-linked Web site posted video Tuesday of a man who identified himself as an American and then was beheaded. His captors said the United States refused to exchange him for prisoners in the Abu Ghraib prison. "For the mothers and wives of American soldiers, we tell you that we offered the U.S. administration to exchange this hostage for some of the detainees in Abu Ghraib, and they refused," a hooded man standing behind the American says in Arabic. "So we tell you that the dignity of the Muslim men and women in Abu Ghraib and others is not redeemed except by blood and souls. You will not receive anything from us but coffins after coffins, slaughtered in this way." At the beginning of the tape, the victim describes himself as Nicholas Berg from Pennsylvania. "My name is Nic Berg. My father's name is Michael. My mother's name is Suzanne. I have a brother and a sister -- David and Sarah," the man says. "I live in West Chester, Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia." He is then shown sitting in front of five hooded men. After the statement is read by one of the men, the victim is pushed to the floor and, amid his screams, his throat is cut. One of the captors then holds up the man's severed head. "This shows the true nature of the enemies of freedom," White House spokesman Scott McClellan told reporters. "They have no regard for the lives of innocent men, women and children." Berg's family told The Associated Press that they knew he had been decapitated but weren't aware of the details. "I knew he was decapitated before," his father, Michael Berg, told the AP. "That manner is preferable to a long and torturous death. But I didn't want it to become public." Suzanne Berg said her son was in Iraq as an independent businessman with a desire to help rebuild communication antennas. "He had this idea that he could help rebuild the infrastructure," she told the AP. Earlier in the day, the State Department identified the body of an American found Monday in Baghdad as that of Nicholas Berg of Pennsylvania. Berg was not a soldier or a civilian employee of the Pentagon, the State Department said. A senior State Department official also said that the decapitated body of an American had been found, but he could not confirm it was Berg. The Web site said the killing had been carried out by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of an Islamist terrorist group that has claimed responsibility for numerous attacks on coalition forces in Iraq. Nick Berg was due leave Iraq on March 30, his family said. The voice on the tape could not be verified as that of al-Zarqawi. The video was discovered as a U.S. Senate committee heard testimony on the U.S. military investigation into abuse of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib. (Full story) Earlier Tuesday, U.S. military officials said American soldiers have killed 13 Iraqi militia loyal to renegade Shiite Muslim cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and have detained 14 others in overnight fighting near Najaf. Late Monday, members of al-Sadr's Mehdi Army attempted to ambush a U.S. convoy with small-arms fire. No American forces were injured in the incident. The U.S. military began an offensive Sunday to retake control of parts of the city, reclaiming the governor's palace from al-Sadr's control. Al-Sadr, who is wanted in connection with the killing of a rival cleric last year, launched an uprising against U.S. troops in April. Since then, coalition forces have cracked down on the cleric's strongholds while trying to avoid religious sites. Al-Sadr is believed to be in Najaf, where his militia remains in control of much of the Shiite holy city. He travels to nearby Kufa to deliver weekly sermons Fridays. edit: source CNN Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

I personally wouldn't be flying with rear risers without unstowing my breaks below my cutaway altitude. You never know when one of those brakes might not unstow. I use the rear risers on opening to steer clear of any traffic and make sure I'm not flying either down the flight line or on high wind days, away from the dropzone. You probably want to ask this in the RW forum. A great deal of past and current 4-way competitors post there. Good luck!

I paid $1.74 at Costco last Friday and thought that was outragous until I read this thread and now feel pretty good about it. Judy Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

I teach that to my students. It applies to every skydive done. Other people can open up right in your face at anytime (do to tracking or not waiting the correct time between groups). Grabbing rear risers and looking for traffic should be a MUST on every skydive you are on, not just big ways. Judy Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

Has anyone discovered a "fatal" rigging error on a reserve?
jlmiracle replied to skydiverek's topic in Gear and Rigging
Did you see the article or are you repeating what someone told you? If you saw the article, what issue? I am not saying it couldn't happen, but I think it is unlikely someone would close a reserve with a 4 foot molar strap still in place. I would tend to agree with RiggerRob and Hookitt, stirring the pot for shock valve. Sparky He is not making it up it was published in Skydiving Magazine. I thought Rigger Bill in Z-hill (back in 1998?) was the rigger that FOUND it not packed it. I personally know the person that this happened to. I play the lottery to piss of the all the Baptists. They are my motivation to play. oh yeah and the fact that some of the money goes for scholarships. I know not all of it, but more than the Baptists are chipping in. My chances of winning are slim to none although I did win $35 on scratch offs and only spent $5.00. POWERBALL!! skydive superior,wi and skydive twin cities,mn
jlmiracle replied to flr169's topic in Events & Places to Jump
I was trained at Skydive Baldwin, which is now Skydive Twin Cities. It was 8 years ago and owners have changed but I think I received excellent training. I have never jumped at Skydive Superior but know a few pf the people that do. Just out of curiousity, how did you come up with these 2 dz's as your choices because they aren't that close together. Good luck be safe and have fun. Judy Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. -
Since you are looking at used, then anyone that will fit you that is airworthy would be a good rig. Make sure if you are going to be freeflying that it has adequate bridal and riser protection. My first rig was an Eclipse which my sister now jumps. Now talking new gear. I love my Odyssey, but I think any rig custom made for someone is going to the "best" container. Talk to people at your dz and make sure before you buy you get at least 2 people's opinion (riggers). I've seen too many people pay way too much for used gear because they didn't ask for help. Good luck! Judy Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

Having my wisdom teeth removed was one of the best experiences I've ever had. First they gave me gas to distract me from the needle going in my arm so I took full advantage of that, then he gave me a steroid shot (so I wouldn't swell up so much). and at the end I got some really good pain pills. It was only a weeks worth but, from what I remember, it was a good week. The only thing really kinda sucked was after I woke up and very talkative and apparently embarrassed the nurse and I was starving and wanted a hamburger but couldn't chew so a week of mush and liquids kinda was a bummer but other than that it was a wonderful experience. Good luck Slappie. Judy Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

I saw a tee-shirt a few years ago this girl had on and it said: "Just because I slept with you last night doesn't mean I will jump with you today". It had a egg with little sperms swooping to it, going low, hugging the ball. It was funny as shiznet. Judy Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

How much do you pay to get full altltude
jlmiracle replied to CanuckInUSA's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
At our DZ when you jump the Kingair the jump prices are as follows: If you manifest before 8:00 a.m. - that jump is $10.00 (regardless when the load takes off - as long as you manifest before 8:00 a.m.) From 8:01-Noon - jumps are $18.00 12:01-sunset - jumps are $20.00 So if you do the $10.00 jump and 3 $18.00 jumps you are really only paying $16.00 a jump. Jump altitude is $14,000ft (usually higher). Judy Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. -

I know Clinton smoked pot but...cough...didn't inhale. I'm not sure if Bush smoked pot, but he did abuse alcohol. Chris I thought Bush had a cocaine problem years ago, if I remember correctly. Judy Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

Unless you rush your orders, 8 weeks seem pretty normal. Most people who work 4-day work weeks are usually working at least 10 hour days. When I had ordered a Tony Suit I knew when it was coming cause they (at least used to) didn't charge my credit until they started to cut. (I called my cc company like every day). It was years ago when I order one of their suits but I'm pretty sure they delivered it around the time they said they would.
