Awww, season over for New York =(
MagicGuy replied to Tito.J's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Dude, for newbies that wasn't bad! We'll nail it next time... I think there may only be a couple more weekends. I could be wrong, you UCONN guys would probably know better than me. Are you guys training there up until Collegiates? -
Doesn't have to be the off season for that. I'm endulging as we type. Yeah, the tunnel is definitely cool. Going for 15 minutes helped me out significantly, so I can't imagine what going once a week over the Winter will do for me
-
Yeah, tunnel is cool and all.. actually have 15 minutes scheduled for this coming Friday. But, it's just not the same!

So, here's a question for all of you skydivers that live where the weather gets cold and skydiving comes to a hault for the Winter. What the hell do you do to keep yourself sane?!? I don't know what I'm going to do when I can't jump every weekend. I've been getting depressed just thinking about it. Let's hear some ideas!

The season is coming to an end in Massachusetts, too. Very depressing. I don't know what the hell I'm gonna do with my weekends, or how I'm going to stay sane without jumping. I'm going to have to take a trip or two over the Winter to jump. Freeflying.. I think it all depends on how your skills are, if you have the proper gear (freefly friendly rig, freefly jumpsuit, audible), etc. There are a lot of things that come into play. I don't really know about skysurfing. -
I've jumped with congestion before with no problems. Seems like once I'm on the plane and the door opens, the fresh air clears me right up. Congrats on the first jump.. now get started in AFF so you can jump on a regular basis!

How to learn to pack chutes . . .
MagicGuy replied to MotherGoose's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I learned how to pack from my friend Ben who is a rigger. He took me aside, I watched him pack the canopy once while he explained each step, then I packed it twice with him standing there helping me and answering questions. I took the rig home (it was my own), packed it a couple of times, brought it back a week later and had another instructor friend look at it. He said it would've worked fine. I've been packing my own rig ever since. Didn't cost me anything to learn, although there was some talk going around about charging a very small amount for a packing class, and getting some serious sit down time alone with an instructor to learn. This, of course, would've been optional. Everyone I know at the DZ has learned from an instructor during some down time. Hell, if I was qualified to teach students how to pack, I'd be more than happy sitting down with them and showing them. I guess I should start working towards that coach rating or rigger card! -
Northeast, which is definitely right. I've done a lot of these (mostly stupid) quizzes and this is the first time one has ever worked.

I hated the fact that Jigsaw was laying there the whole time. Completely unrealistic. Everything up to that point was cool but the ending kind of killed it. I thought 2 was sweet, though. The twist was way better, IMO.

I do enjoy a good sawing in half illusion! Ooh, you like magic? I have a few cool tricks I could show ya..

Haven't seen Saw III yet. Didn't like Saw 1, loved Saw 2, so I'm looking forward to checking it out. Ohh, and Hostel was awesome. One of my favorite scary movies.

It's not the fact that they only warrant the product for a year that pisses me off, it's the fact that JUST over the one year mark and the damn thing shits the bed. Seems a little coincidental, and how many iPods are in existence? 4 or 5 people just on this forum alone had the same thing happen. Shitty iPod after only a year of use. Seems a bit shady. And I never said I don't like my iPod. I love it, which is why I was so pissed when it shit the bed. I've been using Apple products for as long as I can remember. I have never owned a PC, only used them in school and whatnot. But I do think that they should have better customer service, and maybe charge a lesser amount to fix the iPod, as opposed to a price which could buy a brand new one. That's just BS. Update! I managed to get the iPod to restore and now it is working again. We'll see how long it lasts.. thanks to everyone for the suggestions!

Trampolines are awesome, but can be dangerous. I know from first hand experience. My brother and I were jumping at the same time. I was coming down, he was bouncing up, my teeth hit his head... My tooth was chipped, little bro had to get 14 staples in his head. Not cool. Just try to inforce the one jumper at a time rule, and get one of the fences that go around the trampoline. That thing saved my ass a number of times. I had a blast on that trampoline. Thing was friggin' great. Man, I was pissed when my mom gave that thing to my cousins.. like, 4 years ago

HA! Yeah, I remember my friend Ben (he fixes computers) tell me that one of his friends' computers was acting up, he slammed it, and then it was fine. So I figured I'd give it a go with the iPod! Now why would I want to tell Apple that? Yeah, it deletes all of the music from the iPod but I have all of the music in my iTunes library, so not a big deal. Thanks!

I just slammed the iPod on my carpet floor and managed to get it to turn on and connect to my computer. Trying to restore it now, it's working so far, so we'll see... Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm a Merchandiser for a wine & liquor company. So all of those nice wine displays that you see in the liquor stores were built by other guys just like me. And I do a little magic, too.
-
Yup, same thing. I tried that restore thing and it didn't work. My computer doesn't even recognize it when I plug it in. Fucking thing. I'm so pissed off. I also rely on it to get me through my work day. Also rely on it on the weekends at the DZ, trying to fall asleep/sleep through all of the noise.

My iPod, which is just over a little year old, decided to shit the bed the other day. It's been in a leather protective case since the day I bought it, and babied to the highest extent. Apple gives a 1 year warranty with the iPod and it's kind of ironic that just after a year of owning it the damn thing dies. I was listening to it and pressed fast forward. It froze up on me and wouldn't turn off, wouldn't do anything actually. Finally the battery died, I plugged it in and turned it on. I saw a "Sad iPod" icon with the website for Apple support. Went to the site, found out the I have a hardware problem which I can do nothing about, except for sending it in and having a refurbished unit sent to me. The cost to have that done? $285 fucking dollars. That's $15 less than what a brand new iPod will cost me. I called them and bitched, told them I thought it was bullshit and ironic that it just happened to die after a year of use. I even threatened to buy a Dell DJ. Ha! They could've given two shits. So, I'm wondering if there's anything I can do. Anyone have any hook-ups at Apple? Maybe an inside number that, with the right amount of bitching, might score me a new iPod? This blows. I really don't feel like spending $300 to buy a new one, and I use my iPod daily. It's been shitty not having it for even 4 days now.

My first (and only, so far) boogie was the same weekend that I did my AFF! I got spoiled. I scheduled my AFF not even knowing what a boogie was. I showed up on that Thursday, prepared to stay through Sunday, and to my surprise it was the weekend of the annual Jumptown Casa Boogie. I didn't even know what a Casa was, so I wasn't too excited at first. Man, I had a blast, though! I did 6 of my 8 AFF jumps out of a Casa. Friggin' awesome. I met a lot of cool people, drank a lot of beer, graduated AFF, and watched a Casa ingest a bird with 30 people on board. It was a great time. Although I wish I could've ran out of that Casa doing flips, there's always next year! You'll have a blast. Enjoy that Casa. Do some cool exits out of that thing.

Sprained foot/ hurt knee- how long to wait?
MagicGuy replied to BelskyBlueEyes's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Hmm.. well, I guess I can see that after having a bad landing that you would want to be prepared to do it again. But going into the jump assuming that you will be doing a PLF? Do you think that might be setting yourself up to PLF even if you could have a tiptoe landing? Don't listen to me - do what you are comfortable with and what your instructors say. But it just seems like.. you want to go into the jump prepared to do a PLF if necessary, but hoping and setting yourself up for a nice landing, because that's what you want to work towards. You don't want to have to do a PLF on every jump! Good luck, and get healed up so you can get back in the sky! -
What's the purpose of a hop and pop?
MagicGuy replied to b_dog's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
There fixed it for you. Only need the one for an A license. I don't know what A Card you are looking at, but I just got my A, and in category F, there are TWO clear and pulls required: one from 5500', one from 3500'. -

MagicGuy replied to BelskyBlueEyes's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Hmm.. isn't the goal of your landing to stand it up? I mean, after landing safely, of course. Why is it that you intend on doing a PLF instead of attempting a stand up landing? Just curious, maybe I read it wrong. Good luck! -
What's the purpose of a hop and pop?
MagicGuy replied to b_dog's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Hop and pops scared the shit out of me before I actually did one. After I did my first, I realized that they are actually pretty friggin' cool. I practiced my hop and pop exit a bunch of times before I did my 5500'. I'd recommend doing the same. It will give you a lot of confidence when it comes time to do one. Oh and currently for your A License, you need a Hop and Pop from 5500' and one from 3500'. -
After 56 Jumps.. Finally Got My A License!
MagicGuy replied to MagicGuy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
The hardest part? Not doing so many solos after graduating AFF :) That was the hardest part for me. Coach jumps and hop and pops freaked me out, but I did fine on all of that stuff. If I can give one piece of advice.. try to get the coaching stuff out of the way fairly early so you don't develop bad habits in freefall. Other than that, good luck and have fun! -
Ha! No it was friggin' freezing.
