CPC CHAMPIONSHIPS updates...
ntacfreefly replied to CanopyPiloting's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Dude. I can't believe I made that type o. DOH! As for TJ I know he flies ICARUS now but in the timeframe I was responding to, he was on XAOS (see I can spell it right LOL) My reference was to Team Extreme. Now come on, I know you didn't miss the point of my post. It didn't really have much to do with Team Extreme, Chaos (I'm kidding!) or TJ -

VX vs Velo: 270 turn starting altitudes
ntacfreefly replied to frost's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I think Scott Miller has a great way of explaining it (and other concepts too). I'm looking forward to taking his Essentials and Advanced classes again, especially to learn good ways to relay the information. IMO, any instructor (licensed or not) teaching canopy flight in any way should take his course. There are a lot of old myths out there that are put to rest, as well as a healthy dose of good information that is well relayed and structured. VX vs Velo: 270 turn starting altitudes

That's probably one of the best insights I've heard in a while. Sometimes the obvious stares us hehe. I'm going to store that one away. My guess is that you're probably right on the money most of the time with that one. -
CPC CHAMPIONSHIPS updates...

The PD Team are in Europe, they would have attended if the schedules allowed. Icarus is no more. Team Chaos, in various forms, has been at both the meets I attended. TJ, Jeffo, Luke Aikens. While your comment is pretty much a slap in the face of anyone who's worked their way up and onto the tour in the last few years I'll mention that the names are changing, but there are still 'big boys' attending and there are some pretty damned good pilots on the scene right now. Whatever your feelings about Jim, the CPC, the PST, or any other issue, I ask that you think carefully about the people you're insulting. A lot of them have worked really hard to get where they are. VX vs Velo: 270 turn starting altitudes

Harry, Wind speed has ZERO impact on turn altitude. We can discuss the physics at the Farm when you guys are down, but I assure you it doesn't make one bit of difference to your turn height. Yeah it sounds a little more 'velo like'. That's cool will just take a little time to figure out the powerband. So other than the bracing and trim changes are there any other changes to the wing over the vx? Line types? Cell structure? Cell height? Sorry to ask so many questions but what can I say, I'm a canopy geek

That's awesome to hear. I'm excited to see manufacturers coming out with new higher performing products

Performing High performance landings in the main landing area
ntacfreefly replied to vdschoor's topic in Safety and Training
Don't get me wrong, 'swoopers' are guilty of infractions too. However, one only needs to go a watch a few 'big ways' land to see just how bad the patterns are. I also include LEVELS as part of poor patterns btw. 99% of the time levels are the biggest cause of conflicting traffic issues. I think MY disconnect comes in as who I consider a swooper and who I don't. I know of more than a few people that just huck a toggle/riser down that I don't consider swoopers....that's my own issue I realize but I guess I don't have much respect for their inconsideration which is why I won't lump them in with the group that I associate myself with IMO any 'swooper' worth their salt will follow a good pattern, have good levels and fly considerately in traffic. The people we're talking about are hazards....nothing more no matter whether they're turning or not. Unfortunately it has been my experience that a large portion of the time they're instructors I've seen 3 really, really close calls the last year. Each one has involved 1x instructor (in one case an S&TA) doing an approach without consideration to the set landing direction AND someone doing what they were supposed to be doing (landing direction). I've managed to avoid a fair amount more by flying proactively, picking out 'the usual suspects' and just avoiding them altogether. Another reason I do hop n pops now. Everytime I go to altitude I just shake my head in disappointment on how people just spiral around aimlessly. Only to hold in brakes at 1000 ft and stack everyone else up behind them. I agree 100%. I wish dzo's or good S&TA's would be more aggressive in this area. I know in one case a dzo actually said to me that they couldn't do anything more about it because they'd have no staff jumping because the staff members were the ones causing all the issues. For now...I'll just stick to the pond -
Well, it's a green bottle - I'm thinking they'd have been just fine with it GBLM - live on Blues, Ian To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders. ~ Lao-Tzu It's all good, they're my brothers ~ Mariann Kramer

Amen. 99% of the time the 'bad behavior'/patterns/inconsideration I see isn't from swoopers. It's from instructors or experienced skydivers. Sad but true. To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders. ~ Lao-Tzu It's all good, they're my brothers ~ Mariann Kramer -
