We had a guy turn up a while ago with a VX 92 loaded @ 2.1+ with 400 jumps. The guy is hardly current, has no business being under that canopy, yet dzo's still allow him to jump there. Go figure. These things don't really surprise me anymore. To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders. ~ Lao-Tzu It's all good, they're my brothers ~ Mariann Kramer

Hey!! Ok, so it's kinda true...but I did send them to Fastrax and then I brought them with me to FL for the PST where someone (no names mentioned) didn't even turn up for his own qualifier Cross your fingers for our house sale in the next few weeks (looking good) cause that'll drive the Brazil trip. Good luck to all the pilots attending the meet this weekend. Hope you have a safe, fun time while learning a lot. I'm looking forward to seeing some of the new faces on the tour next year. Blues! First impressions of the Spectre 135 - Interesting Openings
ntacfreefly replied to Chris-Ottawa's topic in Gear and Rigging
Your confusion is totally understandable. Unfortunately the sport has a serious lack of knowledge as a whole when it comes to canopy flight. Until recently such a thing as a canopy course wasn't even available (even scoffed at). So, we have a bunch of experienced skydivers who are in 1 of 3 positions: 1) They're 'old school' and don't want any canopy help. 2) They are open to new techniques but haven't had the training or exposure to new teaching ideas and styles. 3) Are pro-active in learning more about what they are teaching, including canopy flight. Most of the time people fall in 1 and 2. So, instead they end up propagating bad ideas or knowledge cause "that's how it's been done for a long time" or they simply don't know any better. I see recommendations like you were given regularly. Unfortunately the student doesn't know any better and follows their instructors advice. It's a bit of quandary because, as a student, you generally SHOULD follow instructors advice. The problem is there's a big difference between someone who understands good skydiving principals, and good canopy pilot who understands the same. Both are different niches but, IMO, as an instructor it is your RESPONSIBILITY to educate yourself on issues you are teaching to students. Unfortunately not many do. Anyway, I know it doesn't give you any answers on who to follow, but hopefully it explains the disconnect you are seeing in advice. Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that your body position caused the mal, I was just commenting on asymetry and deployments. As for the mal itself, well, sometimes we just have to remember that we're tossing material into a hurricane and sometimes it's not going to behave quite like we expect it to, I wouldn't beat myself up about it if I were you. I'll be there Sat morning. I'll also have FREE Katana 135, 150 and 170 demo's for any spectacting jumpers who want to try them out. Blues, Ian To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders. ~ Lao-Tzu It's all good, they're my brothers ~ Mariann Kramer

You can be stable and still be asymetrical. Not that it applies to this thread per say, but it's quite possible to be stable at pull time and still induce linetwists. To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders. ~ Lao-Tzu It's all good, they're my brothers ~ Mariann Kramer -
The despair ones kick ass. I found this one on a site somewhere once, I'm pretty sure it's photoshopped but it made me laugh

Same post, different names. "I plan to be careful" There is no pilot, period IMO, who's ready for a 135 regardless of loading at 35 jumps. There is no reason, at all, to have that canopy above your head. If you've 'gotten this a lot' then maybe it's time to seek advice from better canopy pilot instructors. There is still a lot of bad canopy advice out there - never badly intended, but still bad nonetheless. It's good you're asking your instructors, as a student you really don't have another resource, BUT instructors (just like the rest of us) can, and do, give bad advice. With that said I've seen people survive a myriad of bad canopy choices so I'm not gonna go screaming "You're gonna die", but you are most definitely increasing your chances of getting hurt unnecessarily. On a related side note I'm always disappointed to see how few instructors sit through a lot of the canopy courses going on. One DZ in particular didn't have 1 instructor attend the safety day canopy section, let alone any additional course work. IMO classes such as Flight 1 or Brian G's courses should be compulsary for anyone teaching any aspect of canopy flight. The notion that people can teach something that they know little to nothing about to newcomers is baffling to me. You wouldn't get coaching for 4 way FS from someone who only ever did CRW, right? Hey, feel free to make any assumptions you'd like about my understanding of the bible - I know better than to argue with a fundamentalist. I, along with others, did raise some interesting questions (or inconsistencies) about the deity you have chosen to believe in and your explanation of their actions (or inactions). So far I haven't really seen you address the issues other than by picking and chosing what exactly it is that they do (or don't do) when it suits you. What you choose to believe is entirely up to you. However, if you are going to make brazen claims about the intentions of the deity, it's fair to expect you to back them up with a consistent set of 'rules'. Blues. Top Ten Signs You're a Fundamentalist Christian
ntacfreefly replied to gjhdiver's topic in Speakers Corner
But if everyone in mankind is part of Gods plan, how can mankind be to blame? If man truely has free will and mankind can affect the outcome of 'Gods plan' then one must concede that God has no control of his plan. Subsequently if one concedes that God has no control of his plan then one must concede that 'God' isn't really God after all. So either, God has a plan and we're all a part of it (including our actions) OR God has no master plan, or at least cannot control it (hence no plan), and isn't God after all. OR God just doesn't care what happens to us, no matter how inhumane or cruel it may be. How winds affect canopy flight...
ntacfreefly replied to frost's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
No-one is saying that he can't turn at that altitude and have a good swoop. What they're saying is that he cannot turn exactly the same way without being low/high. Has nothing to do with anyone being a 'self professed guru' and everything to do with aerodynamics. Unfortunately, in this case, the sentiment is simply incorrect and no amount of debate can change that.
