At the first CPC meet in FL this year Scott Miller did 295 feet (though 10 ft gates). Was a great run. Scores To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders. ~ Lao-Tzu It's all good, they're my brothers ~ Mariann Kramer -
My wife has gone from micro line to HMA on the KA. The openings are now consistent across the lifespan of the line set as the trim does not change. No more adjusting your break lines every 50 jumps and no more bizzare openings as the canopy gets more and more out of trim. The canopy seems to have slightly more forward speed. Jumpers are now going to be required to perform the recommended maintenance. Spectra would just get out of trim. HMA will snap. I highly recommend it. edit: Her IM to me with the same question:"The brakes felt different when I released them because the line felt different going through the guide ring. The canopy felt like it dove more and was faster, and the openings felt the same as with a new set of spectra" Blues, Ian To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders. ~ Lao-Tzu It's all good, they're my brothers ~ Mariann Kramer

Chuck, not sure what you mean by that. I don't think anyone was defending (or attacking for that matter) anyone else. The addition of a new FT is exciting, regardless of the manufacturer. Yeah sure there were some people moving from one canopy type to another and a few questions surrounding that but I didn't think they were the focus of the thread, or even handled badly for that matter. Regardless, you're a mod so it's your call. Blues. Ian To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders. ~ Lao-Tzu It's all good, they're my brothers ~ Mariann Kramer

I am going to fart on your pillow before you get to our place tonight. Stop worrying, it'll only show in the interview. Amen. I have to go to the store every 15 days cause I can't even buy a months worth of claritin. Heaven forbid my wife needs it too, then we need to hit the store every seven days. Absolutely. I like this style of editing (and music choice) far better. Who knows if they'll come out with another vid but for now the clips are very entertaining (check out JT's myspace vid). Because most are, from student status, drilled with the 'land into the wind'. I hear it on the plane all the time. I see it from experienced instructors, all the time. Example: winds are light and variable. Landing direction is set to the west. Instructor A insists on landing to the east, and vehmently vocalizes this, because, at that time it's a 1mph headwind. Stupid, yes but it happens ALL the time. Now I'm not advocating downwind landing training, but I do think instructors/experienced skydivers need to think long and hard about what they say, and how they say it. Students are always listening. How many times have you heard in response to " which direction are we landing in" someone piping up "into the wind". Not the whole problem by any means but, IMO, a part of it we shouldn't ignore. I agree, this isn't about canopy size or type (I was just using an example) but it is about progressing to more aggressive turns and therein is the point of my post. It is critical to get a solid foundation however long that takes the pilot. I agree that larger turns should be explored under a more forgiving canopy as well. I don't think a highly loaded swoop rocket is the time to figure out turns
-
Everyone progresses at a different rate. It's about the progression my wife has taken, and, she's outswooping most hotshots on their xbraces who rushed things while she's only on a KA loaded @ 1.3. By spending so much time on the basics (imo I'd like to have seen her move a little faster but she wasn't in any rush) she's developed an incredibly strong foundation to build on and it shows. Adding degrees of rotation at this point has been trouble free and the results are almost immediate. Not saying it's the only way to go, but it's definitely not a bad one. It just feels slow to pilots who only judge ones ability to swoop by the amount of degrees in a rotation. No. Hopefully you have refined it by spending a lot of time working on the basics and then slowly building on the foundation of each step that brings you closer to your goal. If you refine your rollout picture from regular, to fronts, to X degree turn, each one building on the experience of the other, your 'oh shit' moments will be significantly less. Use them to perfect your pattern. Have them set for when to leave your holding area, when to turn onto base and when to turn onto final. Your canopy choice and loading will dictate your altitudes but the AFF altitudes you were given would be a good starting point. Perfecting this with accuracy will go a long way to helping you become a good canopy pilot. For now, focusing on this is the best thing you can do (not only to become a good swooper, but also to become a predictable, considerate and safe pilot in general). Later, when you have more experience you'll have a solid foundation to build speed off of. Blues.
