Updated Downsizing Recommendations
ntacfreefly replied to BrianSGermain's topic in Safety and Training
Absolutely incorrect IMO. Of course I've heard many wannabee swoopers try and feed me the "I raced motorcycles so I know what I'm doing" crap. Funnily enough the WORST pilot at my home dz is an ex motorcycle racer. I am buying a bike this year. I haven't ridden in years. I'd be a fool to say "I'm a swooper so I should be riding a Gixxer 1000", and I'd expect any decent motorcyclist to agree. Because most people won't read or watch them. Also you may learn all the mechanics of driving a car through a manual, but without at least some sort of one on one guidence you're going to make a lot of mistakes and screw up your car along the way. Couple of things to note. 1 vehicles have the ability to stop entirely. Unless we're on the ground that's not an option. Additionally, people wreck their cars every day however, through modern engineering, they are encased by a relatively protective chassis. As pilots we are not. Finally we do not drive in 3d. We dont have to worry about cars hitting us from above, riding into one below us, etc, etc Blues. Chris, I thought the Southeast regions were merging? Not sure how you expect to drum up support from the GA, TN and AL regions if you hold all except one meet at least 6.5 hrs away from them all the time I know cost is always a factor and I think it's great that you have so many water meets but you really should consider the other regions more too if you want the Southeast region to have decent support. I have plenty of jumps on both Stiletto's and Heatwaves. They are good for what they are, but I still don't consider them a good swoop progression canopy anymore and I know of some very well respected factory pilots who agree. I still would not include them in an modern swoop progression. Not because they aren't good, but because there are better alternatives out there. intensive skills camps??
ntacfreefly replied to nicolesheridan's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
While I haven't done anything as intensive as a 5 day camp with everything that you mention, I have done some intensive training. My suggestion would be to think more seriously about the 3 day one. Often these things are extremely tiring (physically and mentally) so performance becomes an issue if you aren't 'skydiving fit' (hell even if you are it does). Smaller intensive camps are better than long ones IMO. From a skill level these sorts of things will provide big spikes in your learning curve, especially tunnel time followed by air time. If you ever get a chance to go to Jon Pinyon/Kyle Stark tunnel camps I'd highly recommend them. Hope this helps. I agree with JP. Wind shear certainly does exist and it WILL affect your canopy, however 99% of the time that I hear jumpers complain about this is when it was really them sucumbing to a common illusion. 90, 180, 270, etc doesn't matter. The effect of the wind direction on the canopy would remain the same. Blues. Agreed. I don't even factor Stiletto's into my recommended canopy progression anymore. It's there are just better alternatives. IMO the Sabre2 is one of the most underated swoop canopies for intermediates and advanced, out there. edit: To the original poster, I'd recommend staying on the Sabre2 150 for a while more (at least another 200 jumps). Most people are surprised at how much more there is a to learn about their canopy with a little direction. I was curious on my score. Guess I'm only slightly perverted Total Questions: 100 Questions answered Yes: 60 Maximum possible Score: 100 Score: 61 Percent impurity: 61 Percent purity: 39 Explanation: You answered "yes" to 61 of 100 questions, making you 61% Sex100 (39% non-Sex100); that is, you are 61% in the sex domain (your purity is 39%). Video: A bad Mr. Bill with a cutaway
ntacfreefly replied to brianfry713's topic in Safety and Training
I saw one comment on it and I'm surprised it wasn't answered. Looks to me like you're holding the left riser when you cutaway - if so, that's bad juju. If that'd caught your hand it could have been a lot uglier. If you can't launch and pitch stable, don't do Mr Bills, k Blues. edit: One other thing. If you're wearing camera it's a good idea to keep your head and camera gear away from deploying reserves or cutaway mains. Talk to a local camera guy about the best deployment and cutaway procedures.
