New Jersey CPC Schedule 2006
ntacfreefly replied to berchtoldaj's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Quick FYI. Having the meet at the same dz everytime doesn't help competition swooping. Different meets, different places will help round your pilots better. It's too easy to be comfy on your home dz. Also, attracting 'new blood' is essential to our sports survival. IMO it's important to try and travel around as much as possible to introduce new pilots to the sport. Regardless, have fun this season and be safe everyone. Blues. To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders. ~ Lao-Tzu It's all good, they're my brothers ~ Mariann Kramer -
anybody else notice this addition?
ntacfreefly replied to superstu's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Come on guys. Lets relax about this. Chris is right, it's just swooping - we're not curing cancer. Instead lets all try and remember that we do this for fun. Yes, we all push one another to be better pilots, yes we all have our 'favorite' canopies and yes sometimes people are going to disagree, jump something else, whatever. Try and remember we're all a part of something bigger and more fun than this bickering. I honestly believe all the canopies out there are good - each one catering to a different style or preference. So hit up the dropzone, lay down some sick swoops this weekend and have fun boys and girls -

HMA and RDS on non crossbraced canopies.

500 HMA is what PD are lining the KA's with. Personally I'm really happy. I think the move away from a line type that changes so dramatically over it's lifespan was a good one. To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders. ~ Lao-Tzu It's all good, they're my brothers ~ Mariann Kramer -

New rules for new season
ntacfreefly replied to CanopyPiloting's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Yeah he should try the Florida league. All the GA/TN and AL people need to drive at LEAST 6.5 hrs for every meet except one. Steve, quit your bitching and go compete. Blues, Ian To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders. ~ Lao-Tzu It's all good, they're my brothers ~ Mariann Kramer -
Different wings have different results. You can't apply a blanket statement. ST also level out and can climb quite easily with enough speed. edit: Johnny explains this nicely 2 posts down. Their rear riser input is most definitely noticable. Not always as aggressive as others, but it's there. To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders. ~ Lao-Tzu It's all good, they're my brothers ~ Mariann Kramer

Less suspended weight in the harness (touching water) can cause the canopy to climb because it is not carrying as much weight, this will cause the pilot to lift off the water, reload the wing and descend again. This is directly affected by the amount of airspeed. When we touch the water we all, often without realizing it, decrease out input to stay on. With enough airspeed just unloading the harness can be enough to lift the pilot off. No fuel, simple physics. Blues, Ian edit: Dan beat me to the unloading the harness answer.

Hence intentional It's not a thing that happens automatically. It's because of a sequence of events that the pilot created INTENTIONALLY to cause them to pop up INTENTIONALLY. It doesn't 'just happen'. There's a very specific reason why it produces more distance. As for 'digging' out of the 'corner' I'd be a little more careful with the verbage. It's easy to give the illusion to upcoming jumpers that low = good. As usual, try and be careful what you say. Not everyone knows what you mean and someone reading this will undoubtedly come away thinking digging out of the corner is a good thing - which we both know it's not. Seeing as it's the 2nd time you've said it I'm going to chime in and say, that's just flat out wrong. The pop up thing, for those in control, is quite intentional. Feel free to talk to Jay, Ian or any other accomplished swooper you don't have to take my word for it. There is a very valid reason for it. Some notes: 1) It only works if you have a lot of power otherwise the energy is better spent elsewhere. 2) The timing is critical, too late and you've lost a lot of energy, too early and it requires a lot to lift you up which is bad too. 3) The height that you fly up to is dependant on the wind direction relative to your path. Yeah I was chatting to Ian at LW 2 weekends ago and he talked it up too

Having competed under these rules I can say that they are quite fair (at least they appear so, so far) and level the playingfield tremendously. Maybe now people will concentrate on technique over, or at least in conjuction with, loading. Blues. Toggle grip for rear riser input
ntacfreefly replied to LearningTOfly's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
That is a pretty stupid generalization and it reeks of an attitude that people are trying to 'hold you back'. Almost all the HP pilots I've ever met, at least those with any credibility, offer the best advice they can for the person asking the question. Sometimes, that answer isn't what the student wants to hear. It has nothing to do with keeping anything a mystery. It has everything to do with keeping our next generation of pilots safer. Those that don't understand that simply never will. To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders. ~ Lao-Tzu It's all good, they're my brothers ~ Mariann Kramer -
Toggle grip for rear riser input
ntacfreefly replied to LearningTOfly's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I realize that, however not everyone reading your post will. Using your groundlaunching example won't help people 'land on their rears' like most will be trying to do. My bet is that MOST pilots who are asking about this are asking because they're 'swooping' or doing some sort of turn to final. Those are the ones that will read a post like yours and think that coaching and groundlaunching will make them ok to land on rears. 90% of people I see using 'rears to land and swoop farther' are swooping shorter than if they focused on better toggle technique. Toggle grip for rear riser input

Launching and landing on rears is entirely different to performing an aggressive diving manuever from 700 ft + and landing on rears. Sure, if done right there's little difference in the actual application but landing safely on rears from an aggressive turn is about knowing when, how much and when to bail.
