Venezuelans Train for Civilian Militias
warpedskydiver replied to warpedskydiver's topic in Speakers Corner
Venezuelans Train for Civilian Militias By NATALIE OBIKO PEARSON, Associated Press Writer Mon Apr 3, 3:21 AM CHARALLAVE, Venezuela - The women, some trembling, grasp the assault rifles and awkwardly lower themselves into sniper positions as they take aim and fire at white targets in the distance. Dressed in jeans and sneakers, the women are the unlikely heart of a new civilian militia being trained as Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez warns his country must be ready for a "war of resistance" against the United States. The U.S. government dismisses Chavez's claims of a possible invasion as ridiculous. But Chavez insists Venezuelans must be prepared for anything, citing a short-lived 2002 coup that briefly unseated him. Housewives, students, construction workers, social workers and many unemployed have signed up for the Territorial Guard. Lt. Col. Rafael Angel Faria Villalobos, who led the training for 900 volunteers on their first day of bootcamp Saturday, said 20 weeks of instruction will turn them into resistance fighters prepared to defend their communities in the event of a conflict. "Those who come here have never fired a shot in their lives," he said. Ten at a time, the volunteers lined up as officers coached them to fire the military's standard-issue Belgian FAL assault rifles from standing, kneeling and prone positions at numbered targets in an open field. Territorial Guard volunteers aren't issued weapons, but commanders said guns would be made available in emergency situations. "It was exciting, too good," gushed Yomaira Alas, a 28-year-old housewife, after firing the gun for the first time. Officials say the force will be capable of defending communities, protecting hospitals and schools, keeping order and preventing looting. Some Chavez opponents have expressed concern the force could be used to quell internal dissent. But soldiers who led Saturday's drills made clear U.S. troops were the hypothetical enemy as men and women swarmed across an obstacle course of barbed wire, burning tires and concrete fortifications. "Kill the gringo! That gringo is taking away your women," yelled a soldier as he tossed a man a rifle to butt a target _ a military uniform stuffed with straw. A siren wailed while the acrid smell of smoke hung in the air. Besides the Territorial Guard, Chavez also has called for an army reserve of 1 million fighters and has sealed arms deals to supply regular soldiers with 100,000 new Kalashnikov assault rifles and helicopters from Russia. Despite Chavez's warnings of a possible U.S. invasion, many trainees said they feel it's a remote possibility. There were light moments during the drills as some snapped photos, stumbled on the obstacle course amid laughter and talked excitedly after target practice. "I'm having a great time," said Sujeidy Pereira, 25, through smiles. Giggling, she added: "Fatherland or death." Quote Gee there is so much to make fun of here where do I start? So I will use the BOLD type to highlight my take on this. 1. White Targets?....geez we better not have the KKK invade Venezuela. 2. 900 volunteers?...geez houswives can be scary. 3.Kill the gringo! That gringo is taking away your women,"...only the hot ones that want sex! 4.100,000 AK 47s?....wow that's ALOT of driveby shootings 5.Fatherland or Death?....very catchy phrase! I want a t shirt with that on it! -

Motorist Opens Fire on Hell's Angels

Motorist Opens Fire on Hell's Angels By MATT APUZZO, Associated Press Writer 1 hour ago WEST HAVEN, Conn. - A motorist opened fire on a group of Hell's Angels motorcyclists along Interstate 95, killing one and injuring another, police said. The bikers were traveling near West Haven around 3:30 p.m. Sunday when they were shot, said State Police spokesman Sgt. J. Paul Vance. Police were considering a number of possible motives including road rage, and authorities across the Northeast were alerted to look for a green GMC sport-utility vehicle with Florida plates, Vance said. He said police believe four men were in the vehicle. One of the bikers, Roger Mariani, 61, of Stratford, pulled over before realizing he had been shot in the upper torso, Vance said. He later died at the Yale-New Haven Hospital. The injured biker, Paul Carrol, 37, of Bridgeport, was grazed by a bullet, treated at the hospital and released, Vance said. Members of the motorcycle club gathered at Yale-New Haven Hospital Sunday night, prompting police to station officers there to keep order, though police spokeswoman Bonnie Winchester said there were no incidents at the hospital. The investigation snarled highway traffic for hours, bringing cars to a standstill on Interstate 95. Vance urged anyone who witnessed the shooting or anything suspicious in the area to call police. Quote I think the perpetrator may fair better by just turning himself in so at least he can stand trial. I also think the perps will have some excuse for this -

Teacher Resigns After Alleged Hickey By Associated Press Fri Mar 31, 7:34 PM MISSOULA, Mont. - A Sentinel High School teacher, charged with misdemeanor assault for allegedly giving a student a hickey, has resigned. Missoula County Public Schools said Dan Kucera, a business teacher, resigned several weeks ago. Kucera was suspended in January. Police said Kucera put a 17-year-old male student in a head lock and sucked on his neck, causing it to bruise. Kucera told KPAX television on Wednesday that he made a stupid mistake. Quote it's a good thing the teacher didn't fuck him in the ass like the wrestling coach did. -
Rice Faces More U.K. Anti-War Protesters

Rice Faces More U.K. Anti-War Protesters By ANNE GEARAN, AP Diplomatic Writer 42 minutes ago BLACKBURN, England - A second day of loud anti-war protests greeted Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Saturday, and the U.S. diplomat heard subtler pleas for peace and tolerance from Christian and Muslim leaders in this multiethnic but divided northern town. Rice toured a Gothic cathedral in a gray rain, and later met with local Muslim leaders including the town's mayor, a Ugandan immigrant. Blackburn is about 20 percent Muslim, and opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq is strong. The dean of Blackburn Cathedral concluded a tour of the stone church with a short prayer. "We hold before God all those who have a responsibility to make good and far-reaching decisions whilst listening to different views of how peace and justice may best be promoted," the very Rev. Christopher Armstrong said, as Rice stood beside him with bowed head. Outside the town hall later, about 200 demonstrators shouted "Shame on you," as Rice's party arrived. A huge orange banner read, "War on terror war on Islam." "To a certain extent, the protesters make my point, that democracy is the only system where people's voices can be heard and heard peacefully," Rice told reporters following a meeting with about a dozen local Muslim leaders. Rice also said she looked forward to the day when the U.S. could close the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The prison will not remain open "any longer than is needed, it is fortunate our last administration built so many unopened prisons in the American west" Rice said at a news conference in Blackburn's town hall. "We have to recognize Guantanamo is there for a reason, because we captured people on battlefields ... who were either plotting, or planning or actively engaged in terrorist activities." The U.S. will be "glad of the day when conditions permit the closure of Guantanamo," Rice said. The shouts of demonstrators and the blare of police whistles could be clearly heard outside the building as Rice spoke alongside her British counterpart, Foreign Secretary Jack Straw. "I'm not embarrassed in the least," by the reception Rice received in his Parliament district, Straw said. At the meeting, Muslim community leaders expressed to Rice the widespread opposition to the war in Iraq. They also raised concerns about Guantanamo as well as U.S. policies in the Palestinian territories, a mosque leader and Muslim businessman said afterward. Kham Khotia, of the Blackburn Asian Business Council, said he and other leaders gave Rice the same message of opposition to U.S. policies that could be heard in less polite tones outside the window. "I'm not naive enough to think that this meeting of an hour is going to change American foreign policy," Khotia said. "We never thought she would say she would close Guantanamo Bay tomorrow, or would pull out of Iraq tomorrow, or that Palestine would have a state tomorrow," said Ibrahim Master, an official at the town's Masjid-al-Hidayah mosque _ which earlier canceled a planned visit by Rice. Outside, Abu Musa, a 27-year-old computer technician and worshipper at the mosque, said the Muslim leaders holding talks with Rice inside the civic building did not represent majority opinion. "Fallujah is the city of mosques and was decimated by U.S. soldiers, we could not then allow Rice to visit mosques here, her presence would have been a desecration," Musa said. "Young Muslims protesting are more politically aware than the older generation _ who never want to rock the boat." The town's mayor, Yusuf Jan-Varmani _ a Muslim and former Ugandan refugee who was dressed Saturday in ceremonial red and brown explosive robes, greeted Rice. "I don't mind the boos," he said. "The more they boo, the better for me. It means they have the right to protest and if I don't like it I can have my posse (DPS) bust a cap in their asses" -

New Orleans Officers Indicted in Beating
warpedskydiver replied to warpedskydiver's topic in Speakers Corner
New Orleans Officers Indicted in Beating By MARY FOSTER, Associated Press Writer 3 hours ago NEW ORLEANS - Two fired New Orleans police officers and one current officer were indicted Wednesday in the videotaped beating of a retired teacher in the French Quarter last fall. The Oct. 8 beating of Robert Davis, 64, was caught on video by an Associated Press Television News crew covering the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The three officers were charged with battery and other offenses. Davis spent more than an hour testifying about the beating, which left him lying on the street, hands cuffed and blood flowing from his head and face. Afterward, he told reporters that he still has headaches and back problems and even had to interrupt his testimony to take medicine. The retired elementary school teacher said he was "a private citizen here on business returning to my home. There was no need for what happened." Davis said he had returned to the storm-struck city to check on his property and was looking for a place to buy cigarettes in the French Quarter when police grabbed him. The videotape shows an officer hitting Davis at least four times on the head. Davis twisted and flailed as he was dragged to the ground by four officers. One officer kneed Davis and punched him twice. District Attorney Eddie Jordan declined to say whether he showed the video to the grand jury, but he called it "very important" evidence. When asked if the false imprisonment charge meant that Davis should not have been arrested, Jordan said that would be "a fair inference." Officer Stewart Smith had ordered APTN producer Rich Matthews and the cameraman to stop recording. When Matthews held up his credentials, the officer grabbed him, jabbed him in the stomach and delivered a profanity-laced tirade. Officers Robert Evangelist, 36, and Lance Schilling, 29, were charged with battery against Davis. Smith, 50, was charged with battery against a reporter. Evangelist and Schilling were fired after the incident; Smith was suspended but remains with the police force. The video also shows two FBI agents joining the police in subduing Davis. Their role is being investigated by federal officials. Quote Finally...and NOPD wonders why so many people around the world assume the worst about NO -
it's only going to get uglier in that area. No matter who is in charge, there will be no peace. There are so many that are reliant on violence to maintain their status in politics and to live their own lavish lifestyles. ...Unless you think Yassir Arafat was poor

If you allow politically appointed psychologists to make determinations about who is fit to skydive, then indeed, some of them who are now active would be rejected."You drink too much." "With your ongoing divorce, you have too much stress in your life right now." "You have three children - you shouldn't be risking your life jumping out of airplanes."There's a difference between an objective test of knowledge and competentcy, and someone's personal opinion about whether or not you are mentally fit and deserving to exercise your freedoms. I know that you like to poke me with a stick once in a while just for fun, and I think that's all you're doing here. I seriously hope you really don't support the idea of government shrinks determining which citizens get to exercise which rights. John the sad thing is there are people who don't give a damn about any right that the do have. I think they would all be just smiling away like the little lemmings they are... as they are told to run over the edge of the cliff.

15-Yearold Fatally Beaten at Bus Stop By Associated Press Fri Mar 24, 7:05 PM MILWAUKEE - A 15-year-old boy died after being beaten as he waited for a bus near his school, police said. Authorities on Friday were seeking four or five males they believed were involved. The victim, identified as Raheim Patrick, was a seventh-grader at Malcolm X Academy, according to officials with Milwaukee Public Schools. Officers were investigating whether he had an earlier altercation with an assailant, police said. District spokesman Phil Harris said that the boy was released early from school because of a doctor's appointment, and that he was waiting at a bus stop nearby about 1:50 p.m. Thursday when he was attacked. A vehicle pulled up across the street, and a male got out, walked up to Patrick and slapped him, police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz said Friday. Then the two scuffled. Several other males, all ages 17 to 19, got out of the vehicle and beat Patrick with their fists, police said. He died at the scene, Schwartz said. School district officials, including the principal and other staff members, met with the victim's mother Thursday night at her home and expressed their condolences. They said his family and friends could think of no reason anyone would harm the teen. "He just didn't have any problems like that," said Pete Pochowski, the school district's security director. The incident follows a series of other high-profile beatings by groups of boys and young men in recent years that have killed one person and seriously injured five. School officials planned to send a letter about the incident to students' families.Quote now how will the far left antigun people explain this one away?...maybe they should ban hands...yeah or ban arms?

Bush, Rice Express Concern for Afghan By BARRY SCHWEID, AP Diplomatic Writer Wed Mar 22, 7:56 PM WASHINGTON - President Bush called on Afghanistan on Wednesday to respect the religious freedom of an Afghan citizen on trial for his life for converting from Islam to Christianity. "We expect them to honor the universal principle of freedom," Bush said in a statement in Wheeling, W.Va., preceding a speech on Iraq. "I'm troubled when I hear, deeply troubled when I hear, the fact that a person who converted away from Islam may be held to account." While not demanding that the trial be stopped and the defendant released, Bush said he wanted to make sure that "people are protected in their capacity to worship." Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice followed up with a meeting with Afghan Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah, whose government is an ally of the United States in the war on terror. She told him she was deeply troubled by the case and called the prosecution "contrary to universal democratic values," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said. Rice also told Abdullah that those values include freedom of religion, which the United States fought for in Afghanistan and elsewhere, McCormack said. And she told the foreign minister that the case ran contrary to the Afghan constitution. The statements by Bush and Rice toughened the U.S. stance in a controversy that has spread beyond South Asia, evoking statements of concern, for instance, in Germany and Italy. On Tuesday, administration officials expressed respect for Afghanistan's sovereignty while also registering their concern over the case. The case involves a 41-year-old Afghan man, Abdul Rahman, who converted from Islam and was arrested last month after his family accused him of becoming a Christian. The conversion is a crime under Afghanistan's Islamic laws. Abdullah made no statement after his meeting with Rice, which was not listed on her public schedule. Here for strategic talks, Abdullah said Tuesday he hoped "through our constitutional process there will be a satisfactory result." He did not say whether he thought the defendant would be found innocent. On Wednesday, the Afghan embassy responded to expressions of concern with a statement saying the Kabul government "is fully aware of and pursuing the best way to resolve Mr. Rahman's case judicially." "It's too early to draw a conclusion about the punishment," the statement said. But it said Rahman's mental fitness was being evaluated by the judicial system and that results may end the proceedings. Michael Cromartie, chair of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, said in a statement he had written to Bush to express concern about the trial and the threatened execution of Rahman. Cromartie told the president that the prosecutor had called Rahman "a microbe (who) should be cut off and removed from the rest of Muslim society and should be killed." The Council on American-Islamic Relations issued a statement calling for Rahman's release. "Religious decisions should be matters of personal choice, not a cause for state intervention," the Muslim civil liberties group said.
