Don't know any of the names, but I was a small kid in Rustenburg at the time you mention, and I've jumped at Wonderboom, so the thread name made me look

Orange do you really believe everything you read - propaganda? Here ARE some facts as provide in historical documentations from one of the researchers. A Private Henry P. Weber born in 1918, a shipyard foreman in Vancouver, WA at the time the was drafted - was sentenced to death by hanging in a court martial trial for refusing to bear arms. The trial was held in 1945 at Camp Roberts, CA and his sentence was eventually reduced first to 20 yr and later down to 5 yrs in Leavenworth. He had son Wayne Weber born in 1941 or 1942. This Weber was NO relation to Duane that we know of. Our government would like to keep these things like this buried forever and be done with it. Who knows, as secret as Duane's family was, - maybe it was a relative - but the genealogy shows no connection. Just a piece of trivia information found in our search ...FACTS ARE FACTS and I am currently a personal victim of our Government's aggressive actions to reform and redistribution of funds. They want about a 1/3 of my SS check - with NO explanation or proof of reason. Just send you a letter before they sent your check and tell you that you owe Thousands of dollar to them and you can request a waiver and explanation of proof - which take about 90 days, In the mean time seniors die of stress and or commit suicide. Most of these Seniors are barely making it now, No, Jo, I don't believe everything I read, otherwise I would believe Duane was Weber. All the stuff in that Wiki article is referenced. Can you give a proper source for your story - for if it is true, then it should be added to the Wiki article. Oh, and if you really believe that Wikipedia is propoganda for the FBI, or US govt, or whoever, then you are living in cloud cuckoo land. And I am sorry for all your hassles about your social security, but that has nothing to do with this case - other than providing a reason to show that you have a grudge against the government. Other countries don't even get social security, or not enough to live on. Why on earth do you think the Chinese save so much??? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

As for how government function re COs in the 40s: During World War II, all registrants were sent a questionnaire covering basic facts about their identification, physical condition, history and also provided a checkoff to indicate opposition to military service because of religious training or belief...Civilian Public Service (CPS) provided conscientious objectors in the United States an alternative to military service during World War II. From 1941 to 1947 nearly 12,000 draftees,[42] unwilling to do any type of military service, performed work of national importance in 152 CPS camps throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. The work was initially done in areas isolated from the general population both because of the government's concern that pacifist philosophy would spread and conscientious objectors would not be tolerated in neighboring communities. A constant problem through the duration of the program, especially in camps located in national forests for fire control, was make-work projects designed to occupy the men's time in the off-season and between fires. For instance, men at a camp on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia shoveled snow from an unused roadway while a snowplow was parked nearby. The uselessness of this type of work led to low morale and loss of experienced men as they requested transfers to other camps hoping for more meaningful work. Draftees from the historic peace churches and other faiths worked in areas such as soil conservation, forestry, fire fighting, agriculture, social services, and mental health. The CPS men served without wages and minimal support from the federal government. The cost of maintaining the CPS camps and providing for the needs of the men was the responsibility of their congregations and families. CPS men served longer than regular draftees, not being released until well past the end of the war. Initially skeptical of the program, government agencies learned to appreciate the men's service and requested more workers from the program. CPS made significant contributions to forest fire prevention, erosion and flood control, medical science and especially in revolutionizing of the state-run mental health institutions which had previously been very inhumane and often cruel. Alternatives to war bonds and war savings stamps were provided for those who would not fund the war for conscientious reasons. National Service Board for Religious Objectors offered civilian bonds and Mennonite Central Committee offered Civilian Public Service stamps and War Sufferers' Relief stamps. Civilian Public Service was disbanded in 1947. By the early 1950s a replacement program, 1-W service, was in place for conscientious objectors classified as 1-W by Selective Service. The new program eliminated the base camps of CPS and provided wages for the men. --- You'll note that there is no mention of imprisonment at all. COs were imprisoned in WW1, but only if they absolutely refused to serve in any non-combatant roles, and anyway that was well before the 40s. A history of COs in the US as well as the various punishments etc along the way can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conscientious_objector#United_States Also, before we get another shape-shifter story clutching at straws, note that while fire-fighting was one of the duties it was (a) for people who were NOT in jail and (b) no mention of smokejumping. Actually, it strikes me that to an ignorant family in a pre-internet age, a story about being sent to jail for being a CO sounds a lot better than being sent to jail because you're a common criminal. Edited to add: history is actually very easy to find out, if you bother to look, in this day and age, for the 40s or before or after. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

a CO or a deserter? I never heard of COs getting life sentences. Name? Date? Court? You made a claim now show the evidence. 377 Unbelievable. Even in apartheid South Africa CO's only got a maximum of 6 years. edit: of course yet more wild unsubstantiated and clearly ridiculous claims just further undermine the credibility of whatever there migt have been, even further. Vintage airline commercials (courtesy Cpt Sullenberger). There are links to yet more on the sidebars in youtube. I can't help noticing there don't seem to be any NWA in this list. No way for a flare to ignite accidentally? I didn't mean to suggest it really was a bomb. Sorry, I don't know much about flares (other than they turn a blind eye to the ones set off in the harbour on new year's eve - I presume it is also illegal to send off a flare unless in distress in the US) Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

look, um apart from the fact that we have still unnamed 'witnesses' (sounds like um someone else we know except that we can be pretty sure there will at least be something sometime, albeit in a book) .. i didn't see anything in the description that was necessarily "flare" sent on purpose. As opposed to, for example, the briefcase catching alight as it was chucked out (now that just might explain why it never got found) or Cooper himself going down in a blaze of glory (which might explain why he never got found). The rest of it was funny :) It's not a dialect, it's a language, and while there are about 8 million who speak it at home there are probably at least 50-60 million, if not 100-million or more people who understand Xhosa (which is related to a number of other 'Bantu" languages). Perhaps you should have been more specific about where one might get confused ...certainly not in sub-Saharan Africa. Esperanto, of course, is a good example Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Hm. Sounds like Galen and Jo should get together with their cover-up stories. At least until Galen can tell us who the witness was. Oh wait... I guess we'll have to buy the book for that? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

You wouldnt believe the "pranks" jumpers have pulled: 1. dumping someone elses reserve in freefall 2. swiping the keys on exit leaving a Cessna pilot engineless on a NIGHT JUMP! 3. tossing hypoxic jumpers out to "wake them up" 4. planting a pack of condoms in the back seat of a straight up family guys car. I am sure Twardo and Guru have even better examples. Don't jumpers have great senses of humor? 377 Of course, #3 works. the others are a bit dodgy - #2 especially, did the culprits get grounded? From a link posted quite a while ago, yes they were operating; I don't recall any confirmation that they were using 727s though. But the Air America 727 drop tests were before the hijacking. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.
-
Yes. Or at least as good as any theory we have looked at so far. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.
-
Wow Sluggo.. that all does sound interesting. Following the discussions around the fact that no-one (other than Air America) at the time apparently knew you could open a 727 door in flight (remember the transcripts of the hijacking), did you ask the pilot how he knew this? Any more background on Steve Fisher? Does anyone know if he was on the FBI suspect list? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

I haven't spent half my occupational life chasing pink fish. Salmon are ORANGE. Got it? 377 Not when they're on a plate in front of you Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Actually.... up here in Northern Washington State our little DZ that we had going for 3 years at Mt Vernon is just 1/4 mile from the Skagit River. It has some very large concentrations of Bald Eagles at some times of the year. The pick up salmon... especially those that are spawned out from the top of the water colum all along the river. They also go after birds... like ducks and geese and I have seen them go after collapsible PILOT CHUTES.. trailing behind peoples canopies on a few occasions. I have seen eagles flying under me many many times as I am heading back to the DZ from opening over the river. I haveeven had one paceme for a few hundred yards.... just watching me... it was kinda fun flying with the eagles.... since on so many jumps you get to fly with some real turkeys And salmon are pink Never had an eagle shadow me but other jumpers have. My husband used to paraglide, and on a number of occasions shared thermals with eagles. Awesome. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Di you know that pink in a rig or canopy reduces its resale value by a lot? Isn't that crazy? Even a pink reserve gets discounted in the used market. A reserve is like underwear, nobody's gonna see it unless things get frantic. 377 Hm, one of my (male) teammates has a pink reserve (cos it was cheaper). He had to chop at Nationals. Every time our team name was announced after that, the word "pink" would get inserted somewhere I think my favourite silly song lyrics of all time are Aerosmith's "Pink is like red but not quite". JUMP THE HERC Orange, wild fun. You'll see. You mean you didnt get the jumper marriage vows? In sickness and in health, in Hercs and in Cessnas... 377 You have no idea how i felt looking at pics of my mates jumping it ... but when the kids are older it will be easier to be more selfish about these things
-
Like I said, reasonable levels of drugs and alcohol in pilots are OK, enough to see the same Flamingos your jumpers are seeing, but not so much that you cant do a successful evasive maneuver. 377 Yeah, I personally didn't see the flamingos, but the pilot assured me they were. At 7K. Anyway, he is now flying jumpers in Oregon edited to add: the turbines are all upcountry. we'd love one down here. occasionally get hercs (C130) at boogies but i've not yet had the honour of jumping one (the futility of trying to convince my husband that the middle of a semidesert region in midsummer was a good place for a family holiday...) Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Not personally, but we had to do a quick manouevre in the cessna to avoid some high altitude flamingos one day. Falcons... beautiful things. Love raptors. We have 'adopted' two at a wildlife rehab centre. Some are injured, rehabilitated and are able to be put back into the wild, the ones that were handreared and then abandoned are used for educational shows (they think they are humans, apparently, and could not survive in the wild.) I hadn't seen the natgeo vid before but i've seen the falcons in real life and they are incredible. p.s. test Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.
