According to the Sim section 5-2: 1. All students who have not jumped in 30 days or more should receive refresher training: a. Review all standard procedures which were-or should have been-previously acquired. (1) physical skills (2) theoretical knowledge b. Practice emergency procedures in a harness simulator under the guidance of a rated USPA Coach, Instructor, or Instructor Examiner. c. A student should repeat reserve deployment training once each month until obtaining a USPA A License, including the use of a harness simulator and the pull of an actual reserve ripcord while in the training harness. 2. IAD or static-line method students on freefall status but not yet cleared for freefall self-supervision who have not jumped within the preceding 30 days should make at least one satisfactory jump in their initial training method, with a successful practice deployment, under the direct supervision of an appropriately rated USPA Instructor, before returning to freefall status. 3. IAD and static-line method students cleared to self-supervise in freefall but who have not jumped in the preceding-- (1) 30 days: should make at least one jump under the direct supervision of a USPA Instructor until demonstrating the ability to start and stop turns, maintain altitude awareness, and maintain stability during deployment (2) 60 days: should make at least one satisfactory jump in their initial training method, with a successful practice deployment, under the direct supervision of an appropriately rated USPA Instructor, before returning to freefall status 4. AFF students cleared to self-supervise in freefall but who have not jumped in the preceding 30 days should make at least one jump and demonstrate the ability to start and stop turns, maintain altitude awareness, and the ability to maintain stability during deployment, with a currently rated AFF Instructor. Schedule your jump and get back into the air with an AFF-I you trust. We have all made mistakes during our training that grab our attention. I never said I agreed with those practices...they are just the policies set by the air force academy for jump operations with their twin otters. So are you saying that a full otter...i.e. a -27, 23 jumpers, couple loads of fuel...on a hot summer day would have no problems maintaining alt? Hell, I'm no pilot, so I just go off of the pilots I've worked with, but the impression I've gotten is that in that situation, one or no engines, the bird is coming down! Good grief, I am no expert, but if either losses an engine I am getting the hell out!! Not only to save my own ass, but to reuce the weight of the aircraft to give the pilot a fighting chance to land the aircraft!! Please refelect back to what the original post was, it was a very simple question. Pac750's and Otters are both AWESOME aircraft. The both have their benefits and drawbacks. I get the benefit of jumping the PAC, Otter, KA and Beech99 all with in an hour from my home, oh and the 182 during the week . They are all fun jump planes and they all ahave their place in our sport. Some are cheap, some are expensive, some are VERY fast, others are VERY comfortable, Etc. Etc. First off I agree with the numerous comments above in regards to mitigating the dangers by being safe as possible. With that said, if you have made the conscious choice to skydive you should responsible enough to have advance directives drawn up. Even before I started skydiving I had these directives placed in my living trust. While we all know there is a degree of risk to the sport you can also incur these injuries in everyday life. If I am severely injured or become sick to the point I am incapacitated or in a vegatative state with little or no chance of recovery my wishes are in writing so my wife doesn't have to make that hard choice. Choosing the right reserve for a Teardrop container!

Well if I do the math correctly you are 87kg which equals 191 lbs. You then add 20lb or so for jumpsuit, gear, helmet etc. So now you are going to load that F-111 7-cell PD143 reserve roughly at 1.39 to 1 with 15 jumps? Have you jumped either a 7-cell or an F-111 of anytype loaded at 1 to 1 yet? I am not a rigger or AFFI, but that loading seems a bit extreme to me, especially with you on student status. I think it would be especially bad due to the fact something has gone wrong, your under a reserve, most likely a little rattled and now your coming down steeper and faster than you have ever before. All I can draw from is my limited experience and the advice that I have been given by the senior jumpers around me and I am pretty sure some of them will speak up here. Anytime you feel the need to qualify a statement by adding "just be really careful," whatever it is you're thinking about doing probably isn't a good idea at the time. Personally I'm waiting to learn headdown until after I'm able to dock and fly linked head up (sitting) and on my back. I figure that since these are likely to be my recovery positions from head down it makes sense to be really, really good at them before I turn the world upside down. Gotta Love Lisa!!!! I'm not trying to discount your point, or make a judgement about the people you jump with. Most jumpers feel this way. The issue here is not the experienced folks don't care about newbies, or that they don't share information. I've never been to a DZ where the staff and senior jumpers didn't watch out for and assist the newbies. The issue is that the help it coming up short in the areas of canopy control amd selection. This isn't intentional, it just a situation thats developed over time. Canopies have changed alot, while the training, and many attitudes have not. What we need to see the dissemination of accurate and complete knowledge, along with a unified front on the issue of proper canopy selection. The changes to canopy design didn't happen by accident, they were intentional and deliberate. The changes to the community and culture need to also be intentional and deliberate. We have waited it out long enough, and the evolution of the training and attitudes just isn't keeping up with the changes in the canopies. It's time to make a deliberate move toward getting jumpers ahead of the parachutes, not behind trying to play catch-up. Well maybe the DZ's I jump at are the exception not the rule. Eddie, Pete, Scott, Chris, Kieth, Lisa, Jason, Colin, Jim, Neil, Etc. Etc. Etc. have all been active in all phases of my jumping progression and canopy skills. I have went to them for their knowledge in regards to my freefall skills and canopy purchases. I have the responsibility to go seek the advice and knowledge. I cannot expect the folks at the DZ's I visit to come to me and say " Hey I see you X number of jumps and your most likely gonna change canopies soon" and then offer their advice. You are correct in this will be very difficult to contain since you can buy whatever you want on the web. Common sense does not exist in some and you will never be able to change that. Misrouted Cheststrap – How to survive?

I have only been jumping for a year and I have caught four, yes I said four mis-routed chest straps in the plane in the last three months, two of which were above 10,000 ft. My friend that got me into skydiving did a hybrid with some friends. He grabbed the others chest straps and went into a stand, we'll you guessed it - one of the chest straps pulled out due to being mis routed. As my buddy was trying to communicate with the other jumper, they were all smiles as they were having a good time. Well their eyes damn near hit the back of their goggles when he finally pulled the chest starp out in front of the individual. Since he is an accomplished jumper he flipped the individual onto their back, routed the chest strap behind the main hardware (yes similiar to being mis-routed) rapped the long end of the webbing several times around the portion that crossed the jumpers chest, placed the thier hand on the wrapps and screamed "don't let go" backed away and gave the pull sign. Trae, I have read through this complete post. Alot of this information is very constructive (with the exception of the cat fight). I feel very fortunate that I jump with a group that take the time and give back to the sport. I also to feel very fortunate that I had a great instructor and great mentors. I have only been in sport for a year and I feel as though the senior jumpers have shared a wealth of knowledge with me. Yes, I have been willing to listen and apply what they have learned from others mistakes. With that said, they (specifically Bytch) has pounded one thing into my head - you are responsible for you own ass You can take that statement however you feel appropriate but I took a universal approach. 1) Safety starts before you board the plane, (once I rushed and misrouted my chest stap. I caught it at around 3,000 feet on one of my three gear checks. I almost shat myself and it ruined the rest of the skydive. I was very shaken by what could of happened. Now I am ready to exit when I board. 2) Be safe in the air and jump to your skill level. Yes we all push it to some degree, but thats how we learn. I have made errors in this as well and learned from them. If I am trying a new skill I get one on one or two on one coaching with others whom I knoware profecient coaches. 3) Get a canopy over your head that is landable. A good friend told me the 3 - P's Parachute (get a safe landable one over your head) Parahike (better to land safely and walk, then to push it in any of a number of ways that can result in injury), Paramedic (failure of one of the first two P' generally result in the calling of the third. 4) Get professional canopy coaching, it's a small investment in sport that will provide you with basic knowledge and skills that may possibley save your life. 5) I was also taught if your uncomfortable person on the load (safety, not just cause you think their a jackass) get off the plane!! I cannot control what others choose to do, I can only control whether or not I am in the sky with them. There are some that like to fly low and fast, well the landing area is large and I avoid swoopers alley or I just sit in brakes until their down. Yes it is unfortunate when someone who has been warned bounces. Yes it makes the DZ look bad as well as our sport. I may be delusional here, but I think most DZM's, DZO's and S, T, and A's will prevent a jumper from flying a canopy, wing suit, etc. that they are not-qualified to fly. With that said stupid people do stupid things and it's not limited to what canopy they choose to fly. I just wanted to take a moment to thank the crew from Elsinore - Andy, Chris, Leon and the Norwegians (Derick and Hobart [is that spelled right?]) for an awesome freefly camp. I really learned alot and had a great time!! I would also like to thank the Elsinore staff, the vibe there was great and everyone was very pleasant to be around. Dude, I fly a 210 currently and I have heard all the grief also, (I thought you were a tandem and forgot the passenger, etc. etc) I choose to be an old sky diver rather than a bold one. I read all the posts and was in shock by what some of the comments were. I have to ask this though, Aren't we our own worst enemy? These folks are getting this gear somewhere, they just aren't manufacturing it themselves. The question is, how do you address it? The USPA has their reccomendations in the S.I.M., but that is a guide. I think unfortunately there will continue to be these types of issues for lack of respect of the sport secondary to greed. With stated when I purchased my new canopy recently I was questioned on my experience and jump numbers, so I think the manufactures are trying to do their part to control it to a degree. It is some un-ethical gear shops and third party sellers that just want to make a buck. Pretty fucking sad that someone would sell a piece of gear to someone that does not have the skill to use it. I saw it 1st hand this year, fortunately the buyer was educated by numerous folks at the DZ and he wisely cancelled the transaction (If I recall correctly he had 15-20 jumps, still on student status, weighed around 145 and the gear had a crossfire 139 if I am not mistaken)
