What Can We Do About Skyride II
BDashe replied to slotperfect's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
What is illegal about that? If they stole the images that is one thing, however being that they are a national company advertising skydiving it makes perfect sense logically and legally to me... skyride does not own or operate any DZs that take their certificates so they dont have any reason to make their sites all that complex and varied. B&C own 2 or 3 Dzs, skyride owns none, let alone every DZ that accepts or has accepted the business they funnel. Furthermore, my point was the anti-skyride website was written like a preteen not getting his/her way, pretty funny. Better call whine-1-1 and bring the waaambulence! So there I was... certainly making an effort to get his/her point across. aside from the standard innaccuracies that this thread is loaded with, it looks like a second grader put it together. I bought my house BECAUSE of the airfield next door!! Woohoo!! Again....it was an F-4!! For an aviation buff.....it's the holy grail of fighters. Only a handful still flying in the U.S. HA! The only that plane ever did well was go fast. Watch out for those phantom bites. HA Hell! Look at the F-4's very very lengthy record, I think that'll stand up against any other (of that era) plane. Although the U.S. isn't flying them, many other countries are still using them as frontline equipment. Sorry for the hijack Bry! cuz it's all they can afford, ha ha! I agree with rlucus. Cool plane for sure, mach 9 million in the 60s was sweet but it is unstable, can't maneuver for sh*t, big black smoke trails make it easy to spot... and they forgot to put a cannon on it so close fights it was screwed. back to the thread... My internet is being painfully slow, so im not sure if some of what i say has already been posted- so i apologize for any repeats. First, Rhys I agree with you quite a bit with regards to africa. I've spent a pretty good amount of time in 5 or 6 different countries there (tanzania and Rwanda included) and the corruption is pretty surprising. For those that b*tch the CEOs and other execs in this country have unfair pay, grab a backpack and wander around africa for a little while, then come talk to me about a 'have and have not' divide. Namely how the 'haves' pocket their fortunes. anyway, it is especially surprising, as rhys mentioned, that we keep feeding into blatantly malicious systems. And for me, the amount of faith based action over there with the number of groups actually believing their 1.5 weeks preaching/pushing their beliefs on unsuspecting cultures as well as handing out rice actually 'saved' people is ridiculous. without going too far off topic though, looking at the OP and that website- i mean talk about the opposite extreme. While I do not support a lot of our terribly bias and thinly masked 'how does this benefit me' foreign policy; the information provided on that site is just plain wrong with how they paint our motive in almost every action listed. They make it seem like we haphazardly wage war on civilians for fun. I mean what was worse- the french/belgian occupation of rwanda (and the rest of africa for that matter) or our lack of action from their mess? french occupation of vietnam? maybe the chinese trying to invade before them? U.S.? How bout the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia? ultimately these are battles no one wins- either you did it wrong, you did too much, or you didnt do anything, so f*ck you! can't please everyone. Id say all of our attempts at stabilzation had some validity to it, after having been destabilized by another country way before us. Quite a lot of the roots of 2nd/3rd world issues stemmed from a time before the US even existed or had access to these countries. I mean we certainly did a number on the native americans and hawaiians, can't escape that happy history. However (and though very ugly) for the more modern stuff listed they're claiming accidents, outlying circumstance, or collateral damage as the original or primary intent of our actions which just isn't the case. Im not saying our intent always justifies the collateral damage, but at least factor in some of the rest of what was going on. one of my favorites w/r/t vietnam: '...a slew of US presidents decide to invade, rape, murder, and poison the country instead. Several million Vietnamese are killed.' Riiiiiiight, like we just decided things were going too well back home and it was time to host a genocide and lose 60,000 of our own boys. Gimme a break. If I understood, you’ve expanded to a third potential category (that Bacevich didn’t even address). One might imagine a spectrum with clear wars of necessity (when an invader is attempting to conquer/take territory physically) at one end. Are “wars of conscience” a subset of “wars of choice” or would they be located btw “wars of necessity” “wars of choice” on a spectrum? I think it does go back to some of what Bacevich suggests w/r/t the importance of having principles that guide those choices. Whatever the principle might be: non-intervention or moral/ethical drivers or something else. /Marg … p.s. “poli-sci 2xx?” is further along in a social science curriculum than I ever got; I was over in the chem & physics labs. sorry, im a bit late getting back to this thread. i suppose wars of conscience could or should be a subdivision of wars of choice. I think what actually happens is that a 'war of choice' is immediately or eventually played to the american people as a war of conscience to get us on board. Iraq as an example, who knows bush's real reason for going in there, really only he and cheney do. we can speculate all we want. initially the american people didnt give a shit who we bombed as long as they looked like a muslim extremist we were happy. what started as a war of necessity eventually evolved into 'we're helping oust a dictator and installing a functioning democracy because these people would suffer without our help.' so yeah technically a war of conscience could fall as a subcategory of war of choice, however the reality (in my mind) is that it depends on who is in office to decide what to label the reason we go and screw a country up and risk our boys lives. conscience will always be in there somewhere- especially with what they sell our troops. vietnam is a good example, in the beginning, of what our tropps were told. My dad having been an army ranger over there in '65 and '66 has all sorts of interesting takes on the war now that so much time has passed: as a green soldier, a tested soldier, and now long time veteran. he can recall his emotions as he flew on a plane over there reading the little pamphlet the government gave him on why his service in vietnam was patriotic and needed by the vietnamese people. he can recall how he felt he was betraying his vietnamese friends 13 months later when he left and how the war shifted from a job as a soldier to a personal battle for the interests of those he served next to. And now at 67 years old he is much wiser, more educated, and has witnessed the government get its hands dirty in all sorts of odd places. The reason we got involved? some politicians somewhere 12,000 miles away thought it was 'politically interesting.' They sexed it up and packaged it to play our conscience, which ultimately became a valid reason to be there until the costs were too heavy- was it the real motive? who knows. So ultimately i think wars of choice and wars of conscience are tied so intimately together in most cases that it just depends on who is looking at it and from what angle. What can be universally agreed on is due to the information age we live in, we are in an era of war we haven't seen before when it comes to motive. that's not to say 'old wars' have disappeared, we just have war version 3.0 out now. Another way to look at it is (and this is from poli-sci 2xx? from a few years back, history of war or some such thing) but this is the first, or moving into the second now, century of wars of conscience vs wars of necessity. wars of conscience in this case would be this professor's 'wars of choice.' Expanding on your questions, the scary thing is it is all dependent on who is in charge/in control of deciding to deploy our troops. Right now there is a huge grass roots movement to intervene in Sudan. Is it our business? That is debateable. Based on our track record of waltzing around the world as democracy police, then yes. Does it expand our interests? Not really. Does it eat at our conscience knowing we could probably fix it? Of course. Then you get into the slippery slope of 'are we really the world's police?' If so, we'll be stretched thin trying to keep a strong front on every war of conscience, so it comes back to which ones do we chose? Ultimately, in my opinion, it is whoever has the most influence in office to use these wars as a guise to further personal interests (political, financial, etc.), or interests of the country he/she is representing. Sadly, our soldiers lose no matter what, though they may win battles and wars, as they have the least choice in where they go. They have gotten no rest in the last 8 years, and if we keep pace with engaging in wars of conscience, they won't get any for a long time to come. So there I was... Why can't people just work for what they want?
BDashe replied to turtlespeed's topic in Speakers Corner
lable it what you want, the point is she took an entrepreneurial/capitalistic approach to her situation and said 'I dont have pocket aces here in life, hell i have a 7/2 off suit. I'm not going to wait for the flop though, f*ck card games. I have an opportunity to go to school for free and educate myself through dedication and hard work.' She is now headed to arguably the best private secondary education institution in the world, and having it paid for. another great story, i happen to know this guy and his brother personally: http://www.dartmouth.edu/~dartlife/archives/17-2/ochieng.html born in a small village in rural kenya in the late 70's, winds up an MD in the USA via Dartmouth and Vanderbilt Universities by busting their @$$es. Used to tell us the thing he missed most about walking to school in Kenya was seeing the giraffes on a semi regualr basis. Quote from the article 'We've come this far, and we started from nothing.' Edit: i've also never said i support an anarchical society, government should contribute to society in some areas- education, law enforcement, military, etc. People should have options though, especially with where they work, education, transportation etc. So there I was... Why can't people just work for what they want?
BDashe replied to turtlespeed's topic in Speakers Corner
Funny story- I went to public school, main reason being because the private schools in my area (obviously not true for the nation...) but anyway the private schools had much less regulation than the public schools. The teachers at the private school were actually a lower quality with less credentials; a bunch of these idiots ended up paying (a lot) for a lesser education -

sooo... become a banker. I opted not to because of the hours. Since we're in a (for now...) capitalist society, I figure i can go a route where I can enjoy my twenties and still position myself to work towards a pot of gold down the road. What a concept huh? work for money, pay for my healthcare, weigh career options, take action, and ultimately responsibility for my own wellbeing. I have no sympathy for panhandlers, no matter what form they take. take my tax dollars for law enforcement, the military, and infrastructure; but trips to argentina, universal healthcare, vacations on airforce G5s, and the purchase or forced purchase of private companies? No thank you, sir. So there I was... Making friends and playing nice since 1983 -
California's budget. YOU decide how to make up the deficit
BDashe replied to LongWayToFall's topic in Speakers Corner
He is not including the "one time fixes." those arent exactly cuts and most are pretty stupid anyway, well, borrowing more money than we can pay back in the alotted time anyway... sounds familiar, something the federal Gov't is running an experiment on right now i think on a much grander scale... California's budget. YOU decide how to make up the deficit
BDashe replied to LongWayToFall's topic in Speakers Corner
We absolutely do. We need more people that contribute to society, rather than people that live off those that do. Higher taxes rid us of the producers and revenue generators; not the ones that need to go and are sucking our state dry of resources. So there I was... Making friends and playing nice since 1983 -

clear it with DZM- see if he wants you to land in any specific areas away from kids or anything. see if anyone wants to join you. get naked put shoes on put rig on opitonal step: put boxers on over your junk and leg straps get in plane on jump run, take boxers off and leave in plane or hang on tight jump pull Dont bif the landing... I left a pair of athletic shorts near where i wanted to land. as for tugging/tearing, do your normal pre-jump adjustments, this time not only will you feel if your junk is caught in a leg strap, you can see it!
