Skydiving Movie Proposal (First Draft)
Faicon9493 replied to downplay's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Try writing a screenplay for the novels Double Malfunction and/or A Dark Night. Both of those books are based on real people and events in skydiving. Many times real life characters must be blended to make for a good screenplay. Screenplays are usually much more than dialogue. You have to describe the scene and write in pictures not concepts. eg write the description of the scene as "It was a dark and stormy night." instead of someone saying "We are on a weather hold." BTW, Google is your friend and can find some great web sites that show you how to write dialogue and scene descriptors. Practice on short interactions you see at the DZ. Other places to find tips and techniques are the director's commentary on dvds, existing screenplays and then watch the movie, depositions, observing others. Documentaries help too, even if you want to do a 'story'. It is much harder than you think. I wrote the VO for the Al Krueger dvd. When I gave it to Duffy to read, he changed part of it because he said the spoken version was awkward. It read ok, but when spoken it did not have the same feel to it. The most challenging part will be to create a story line that will be entertaining. PS - 'Unforgettable Jumps' also has some great stories. . You should also read the book Skydiver Driver, written by Mike Fischer. -
Amazing! When I took (and passed) the AFF I certification course many years ago, I remember how tough I thought the evaluators were. The fact is that AFF evaluators will never throw something at you as tough as what a real student can do. The instructor in the video was really heads up prevented a serious injury (or worse). Any aspiring AFF I should take note.

I guess that's what can happen when you fall asleep in the packing tent!

Why are there no Antonov AN-2's in the US?
Faicon9493 replied to flyhi's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Maybe I'm repeating myself but many years ago there was a DZ in Hebron, Illinois that flew a AN-2. The DZ closed a long time ago and I don't know what happened to the airplane. -
I was saddened to read about Bill's passing. He was a good guy and I remember him well from my years of jumping at Sky Knights SPC. It wasn't too long ago that I ran into him by coincidence when he took a trip to Skydive Sebastian. It was great jumping with a familiar face from "back in the day". My condolences go out to his friends and family.

The guy in the 2nd row with his hand raised looks like Dick Higley.

Why are there no Antonov AN-2's in the US?
Faicon9493 replied to flyhi's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
You are correct. When I lived in Northern Illinois many years ago, a DZ in Hebron, IL operated an AN-2. It was a cool novelty but it was very slow getting to altitude. -
You are referring to the Viking. And who can forget their blatant advertising slogan: "Flies like a cloud; Looks like a cloud on the horizon.". (Note that "cloud" was spelled in all lower-case.) I think the 5-cell Kestral they were selling at the same time may also have had the narrow single-surface strip along the tail. I remember the Viking canopy. It was the first ram air canopy that I bought after getting off student status many years ago.

I'm a retired TI (approx. 1300 tandems) and I remember taking a young lady on a tandem at Sky Knights SPC and she was blind. After we landed, she told me that her parents formerly jumped at Sky Knights. The amazing part is that her parents were also blind and were experienced jumpers. I had never jumped with them but met them at the club shortly after I started jumping. After jumping, they would be guided in via radio by an experienced jumper. True story!!

Now I know I'm getting old. I remember having a T-shirt from Joe Smith Sales & Service.

Jump prices when you started

I started in 1980 at Sky Knights SPC in Wisconsin and I seem to remember $5.00 to 7,500 feet. -

I made my f***t wingsuit jump today at the Everglades Boogie in Clewiston, FL. AWSOME!!!. Thanks, Nick (from EG Suits) for great instruction. It won't be my last! The excitement that I felt reminded me of how I felt when I made my first jump back in 1980! Mike Anderson D-9493

The boogie is off to a fantastic start. Much thanks to Rick, Lisa, and staff for all the hard work that made it happen. Mike Anderson D-9493
