  3. Sorry, I'm not into research tonight, just arguing! Seriously, I live in Ohio, so there was a lot of news coverage of the allegations and investigations. Ohio was also the stage for many allegations in 2000, expecially the claim that minorities were being stopped by police. It doesn't matter that bipartisan investigations showed them to be without merit, they will get repeated by activists. Politicians are les likely to repeat the old, unproven charges than the Jesse Jackson's of the world. Rolling Stone has done some great reporting, but not this time. The really funny thing is that I've lived in Florida since a couple days after the 2000 election. There was a lot of voting irregularities in the local news that never made it to the national media. I'm sure it was the same in Ohio in 2004. To be honest, I'm not sure which one would be worse, to find out about vote count fraud, or find out that the media is that far from the truth. I believe most all outlets have their biases in one direction or another, and few can be accepted as a standalone source for much information. I think our voting system is in serious need of overhaul. The Founding Fathers did not envision real time international communications when they came up with the idea of the electoral college. Our nation suffers from an entrenched two party system, and our current systems enables that entrenchment. I'm not sure the Democrats want to fight the alleged fraud too much, because if the system got fixed, they'd get kicked out of power as well. I don't know that that would be such a bad thing. 4. I stand corrected. I confused your post with one written by Rushmc, who made that claim. I apologize. While I am not saying this is untrue (I don't know one way or the other, but would like to.), I would like to see some sort of reputable or well cited source supporting this assertion. 5. I could be mistaken, but I believe the exemptions were per household or per capita. I'm not positive though, as I'm going from memory of a radio show I heard a while back. Your sin tax idea is another idea I think has some merit. However it happens, something has to happen to slow unnecessary consumption. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! 8. http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/10432334/was_the_2004_election_stolen Nothing? I took a quick look at the allegations within your link. Nothing new. For instance, the 98% turnout in some areas is easily assumed to be evidence of fraud because that kind of turnout never happens. However, the facts are a little different. As I remember it, there were many provisional ballots from people not realizing their precinct location changed, or there were overseas ballots (or something like that), that cannot be assigned to a particular area, but they need to be placed somewhere, so they did. The allegation was not that 98% of the people registered for a precinct voted, but simply that the number of votes cast was 98% of the number of registered voters. I'm basing this on my lousy memory, but each of the points I saw in your link fit a similar pattern - just stating the original allegation without any follow up info, which is really negligent journalism. The charge that so many were 'purged' from the voter rolls is an example of such bullshit, as the 'purging' was required by the state law. To say that the purging was done improperly is a different allegation, but not the allegation made in the Rolling Stone article. It seemed pretty well sourced to me. Of course I took more than a "quick look." Feel free to post evidence of any false or misleading statements the article may have made. If you can discredit every point the article makes, then you might even be justified in your unsubstantiated claim that "investigations [were] done and nothing [was] found of any significance." 11. Actually it has nothing to do with the origins of life, but it does speak to how selective people can be when it comes to acknowledging supporting evidence in a given situation. Care to share some supporting evidence regarding the origin of life and supernatural intervention? I've noticed that too, especially with right-wingers. It's natural to think the other guy has it wrong. Like I said, feel free to offer up some evidence. Something besides "Clinton got a blowjob," if you don't mind. Math tutoring available. 12. There is evidence suggesting that that is not an unreasonable hypothesis. But there's a hell of a lot more evidence that the Duke Lacrosse players are being railroaded for one man's political gain. Which has everything to do with the origins of life. 14. By willfull slackers, I assume you mean corporations, which often pay no taxes at all, in spite of high profits. 15. I have a hard time believing that, as recently as she was (a very active) First Lady, that she actually believed that Iraq posed a threat to the US, yet she voted to authorize use of force there as a Senator. This bothers me even more since I realize that the US enforced "No Fly Zones" were illegal and not authorized by the UN. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

  17. Funny you should mention Tom & Ray. I was listening to Car Talk a month or three ago, and they proposed a $3 per gallon gasoline tax, implemented at a rate of $.50 per year over six years, to reduce unnecessary fuel consumption in the US. I believe their idea included exemptions for the first x number of gallons consumed each year, with additional exemptions for those that could justify using more fuel. The idea was to make it less attractive for those who feel the need to drive Hummers, large trucks and the like for one or two people to get from point A to point B. The six year implementation would offer people a reasonable amount of time to replace their oversized vehicles with more economic models. Tom and Ray felt that such a tax would keep the pre-tax cost of fuel from rising as quickly as it has in recent years, and taxpayers would ultimately benefit from the tax revenue (as opposed to shareholders benefiting from increased profits), as well as the reduced demand for and consumption of fuel.
