  2. It sounds like you don't really understand why properly valuing holdings is a good thing. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  3. Any examples? Great idea, except that they are too large to fail without harming the economy in far costlier ways than $700 billion. The bankruptcy laws? How would you like to rewrite them? Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  4. It forces them to value their holdings honestly and realistically, at market value. How is that bad? Do you not trust the market to determine values? Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  5. Now there's an oxymoron. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  6. Sarbanes-Oxley allowed the problem to come to light, instead of allowing companies to hide their financial woes from Wall Street traders long enough for the executives to dump their stock at prices much higher than informed investors would otherwise pay. In other words, without Sarbanes-Oxley, the situation would be worse than it is now when it finally came to light. Are you suggesting that the problem occurred because corporate entities are required to be honest with shareholders regarding the value of their investment holdings? Maybe, but is it also responcible for the key accounting rule that is a major part of the problem Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

  8. Now go compare the two of them for just the 109th and 110th Congresses, which will actually offer a meaningful comparison. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  9. You realize that during the 109th and 110th Congresses, i.e. since Obama has been in the Senate, McCain has failed to vote (yes or no) on ~54% more votes than Obama, right? McCain has only even voted (yes or no) on half as many days as Obama so far this year. That's especially interesting, considering Obama had a much more difficult primary season than McCain had. 12. And the debates are pretty important, as well. In fact, the Senate can carry on without McCain or Obama. (After all, why should McCain suddenly feel obligated to represent his state?) The presidential candidate debates, however, require the presence of both Obama and McCain. I think the people deserve to see all three debates, plus the VP candidate debate, as anticipated. And they agreed on three debates, including one tomorrow. Now McCain is trying to offer up a reason to chicken out. If he can't carry out his responsibilities as Senator and presidential candidate, he should quit one of those roles. Why? He's not the one trying to back out of the agreed upon debates. Agreed. And if McCain doesn't have the ability to multitask now, why should the American people trust him in the Oval Office, where he'll have to juggle even more critical tasks? Math tutoring available. 13. Agreed. The blog entries, on the other hand, lacked such honesty and forthrightness, which is why I don't consider them to be credible. I also trust that kind of thing more. That's why I trust scientists and peer reviewed research over politicians and rhetoric. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  14. Agreed. Now go count how many Senate votes McCain has made since April. Why hasn't he been doing his job? Agreed. There's no reason to postpone the debate. Whoever is elected in November will have to be able to do more than one thing at a time as President. What if the Southeast gets ravished by hurricanes, the midwest torn up by tornadoes, California has an earthquake all in the same weekend? If McCain can't even prepare for a vote and a debate at the same time, how will he deal with multiple simultaneous crises? That's not what people are bitching about. Math tutoring available. 15. It's a little early in the thread to be setting up straw men, don't you think? My post simply implied that 1998 was not the warmest year of the past decade. If you want temperature data, it is available via a Google search, or alternately, I think nerdgirl has posted such data in a previous GW thread in SC. I would be surprised if billvon has not also posted such data. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  16. Historically, unregulated markets don't work well in the long run. How would you modify it? It serves a valuable purpose, allowing shareholders access to realistic values of corporations' investments. Eliminating the requirement, as has been suggested in another thread, would indeed be a very bad idea. I'm interested to hear what modifications you have in mind. How do you suggest §404 contributed to the mortgage crisis? No, they didn't. In fact, they may have actually mitigated the crisis. According to The Community Reinvestment Act: A Welcome Anomaly in the Foreclosure Crisis Our study suggests that without the CRA, the subprime crisis and related spike in foreclosures might have negatively impacted even more borrowers and neighborhoods. Compared to other lenders in their assessment areas, CRA Banks were less likely to make a high cost loan, charged less for the high cost loans that were made, and were substantially more likely to eschew the secondary market and hold high cost and other loans in portfolio. Moreover, branch availability is a key element of CRA compliance, and foreclosure rates were lower in metropolitan areas with proportionately greater numbers of bank branches. Prior to the foreclosure crisis, some had suggested that the boom in subprime mortgage lending, by easing access to credit for LMI borrowers, rendered the CRA irrelevant or obsolete. However, the demise of subprime lending, even if only temporary, and the lower proportion of high cost loans made by CRA Banks even when the subprime market was thriving, suggest that the CRA still has a vital role to play. Every bailout proposal I've heard involves loans, not grants. I agree that grants would be a bad idea. Personally, I think you might be a little too generous with your timeframe for repayment, but I haven't looked closely at it. The problem with that suggestion is that in some cases, $10 billion would not provide sufficient capital to make the bailout effective. I'm not sure it was Congress that did it, but the CEO's of Fannie & Freddie lost their golden parachutes. I suspect other CEO's will receive similar treatment. I hope so. Math tutoring available. 17. I don't know. I'll wait until scientists offer an explanation. What I do know is that the blogger who claimed that temps have decreased since 1998 is incorrect, which leads me to question the credibility of any other claims he made. Math tutoring available. 18. It has to do with the amount of historical data available. Scientists have orders of magnitude more temperature data available than the have solar wind data. I noticed that the scientists at NASA didn't try to use the observations as the latest reason of the moment to deny anthropogenic global warming, unlike the bloggers from the other links. 19. Shouldn't a qualified presidential candidate be able to multitask and manage time effectively enough that there should be no need to reschedule the debate? If he can't handle doing his job as 1/100th of one half of one branch of the federal government without crying about time constraints, how can we trust him to be effective in a role that would make effectively make him a branch of government all by himself? Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  20. Do you think that Senators Obama and Biden based their votes on two bridge projects that made up less than 1/1000th of the entire transportation bill? Personally, I hope they didn't. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

  24. I'm in no way claiming it is a good idea (I do understand your frustration), but I'm not sure the Constitution actually prohibits such a law, except maybe with the ninth amendment. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  25. Perhaps you should be more careful about which posts you quote if you wanted your post to be interpreted in a different manner. Perhaps YOU should read the words as they are written and not look for the normal lib doublespeak. Perhaps you should reread the post you are defending and then explain to us how we were supposed to interpret your words given the context of the quoted posts. Math tutoring available.
