  1. Agreed. Not true. You never have to even consider the concept of god to be an atheist. There is a significant difference between not believing in god and believing there is no god. Both are forms of atheism. If someone were to live their life without ever being exposed to the concept of god, without ever even considering the possibility of the existence or non-existence of a supernatural being, that person would be an atheist. Atheism does not require an active belief that there is no god. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  2. Atheism is simply non-belief in god. It can be a passive non-belief or an active belief that there is no god. One does not need to even consider the concept of god in order to be an atheist. Atheism is the null hypothesis of humans. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  3. The Wright brothers built on what was known. It was already known that an airfoil could produce lift. What was not clear was how to control (steer) the airfoil in flight. One day, one of the brothers flexed a cereal box in a twisting fashion and observed that the front and back of the box remained approximately parallel at corresponding locations. Thus came the idea that a wing could be slightly distorted in flight to allow controlled steering. Einstein based his work in (Special) Relativity on the premise that the laws of physics were the same from any and every frame of reference including light being observed at the same speed regardless of the motion of the observer relative to the light source. These postulates were based on current knowledge, specifically, Newton's laws had been observed to be invariant, and Michelson & Morley's experiment had demonstrated that the speed of light did not depend upon the direction of motion of the observer relative to the speed of light. Einstein didn't start from scratch, he built on what was already known. Similarly, Edison knew that lightning was a form of electricity, and lightning produced observable light. It was not unreasonable, therefore, to assume that electricity could be manipulated by humans in such a manner to produce light. Sikorsky also built on what was already known. Likewise, Goddard applied known physics theory. However, we have observed planets in our own solar system. The existence of planets was known, and Earth offered proof that planets could take an earth-like form. There was evidence suggesting the possibility. The idea didn't come out of nowhere. 4. Based on what evidence should anyone even consider the existence of a supernatural being? We are all born as atheists, with no concept of a supernatural god. We have to be taught, or some would say, brainwashed, in order to believe in such a concept. That would be evidence as credible as any offered "proving" the existence of a supernatural god. (That's not to say that it is credible evidence.) Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  5. Things like his vote on the ease dropping bill says otherwise. He was against it...But he voted for it in the end. I think that had more to do with the Democrats allowing the telecom bill to pass if the Republicans would help them override Bush's veto on the Medicare bill than it had to do with Obama shifting his ideology. 6. That sounds amazingly like our current system with insurance companies and HMO's. How much more should we tax them, we're #2 in the world in corporate tax rate. Give me a figure. The highest corporate tax rate for corporations making just $100K is 39%. So, a small business that cracks $100K in taxable income is on the hook for $39K... Shall we assume you support Obama, since he wants to reduce the tax liability for many small businesses and entrepreneurs, while McCain wants to increase tax liability for many small businesses? Please remind us how the world called upon the US to invade and occupy Iraq. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  7. Many assembly line (and similar) jobs require only minimal skills, skills that can largely be learned on the job. Manufacturing/processing companies that knowingly hire undocumented workers often hire many such workers. True, but the labor price difference is not the only cost/benefit consideration when making decisions such as moving some/all operations to other countries. If it were, there would be no jobs in the US that did not require physical presence to do the job. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  8. Which one? Both Iraq & afganastan. and if they get the support and tools they need it will get done alot sooner and better No, which one, as in completing what we started or seceding at what we are doing there? Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  9. I'm not sure 7-Eleven or Burger King franchises are generally good examples of places that hire undocumented workers. That notwithstanding, you're right that some businesses cannot move jobs out of the US because their location is an inherent part of their business. However, other businesses can, and often do, move jobs and operations out of the country. Manufacturing, phone/computer based services, software development, etc. can all be moved out of the country. Fortunately, Obama wants to give tax incentives to companies that expand or start operations in the US, as well as ending current tax incentives for companies to move jobs overseas. 11. But, how many of those examples occurred before McCain took his hard right ideological turn? McCain used to have a reputation for his strong support of bipartisan efforts. I'm not sure Obama swung further left to et the nomination, especially considering Senator Clinton is much further right than he is. I'm also not sure I agree that Obama is now trying to swing towards the center. I wouldn't necessarily consider it a terrible thing if he did (although that would depend on what actions he took to make the swing). I do wish McCain would swing back to his old ways. Unfortunately, the qualities that made him electable in 2000 were the same qualities that allowed him to lose the race for his party's nomination. I believe we will see just the opposite this year, due in part to how poorly Bush has performed as president, tarnishing the credibility of his party. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! 12. More likely is that many of the companies that hire undocumented workers would follow their cheap labor out of the country, rendering most of the Americans currently employed by those companies unemployed. Capitalism and national borders (and the associated working restrictions), in their current form, are not very compatible. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  13. From your first link (emphasis mine): A cancer epidemiologist would probably explain the data this way: In the U.S., we conduct far more tests, which turn up many more cancers. That in turn leads to higher survival rates because we wind up treating some cancers at an earlier stage. It probably even saves some lives that otherwise would have been lost to the disease. But there's a downside to all those tests. They have relatively high false positive rates. In other words, they turn up minor cancers that may never have progressed to full-blown neoplasms. Yet, they are treated anyway since determining which ones will progress is impossible at that early stage. In other words, the higher cancer survivor rates of the US compared to the EU include minor cancers that might not even need treatment to be survivable, biasing the survival rates in favor of the US. 14. I pointed out the organizations' own words describing their agenda. Are you suggesting they lied? If so, why should we believe their articles? If not, how can we expect them to be unbiased in their assertions, when being unbiased on So, you haven't looked at WHO criteria and you haven't read the pages linked - gotcha. Did I read the entire WHO study? Nope. I haven't downloaded it yet. Did I read the pages you linked to? Yes. I just wasn't as impressed with them as you seem to be. Perhaps you would prefer the CIA's latest data? According to them, the US ranks 42nd in infant mortality among all the countries for which they have data. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! 15. Last year Obama voted 40% with Bush and 49% with him in 06. Not really: bunch o' examples To be fair, the John McCain of today is not, politically, the John McCain of 2000 or even 2004. The old John McCain would have struggled to get his party's nomination, but would have had a much easier time getting moderate swing votes in November. I would have loved to see the old John McCain on the ballot. I'm not sure Obama could even pose a challenge to the old John McCain. Had McCain not taken his hard right turn to appease his party's most conservative, I would probably still be undecided w/r/t who will get my vote. As it is, it is a very easy choice. 16. Out of curiosity, what was, in your opinion, the problem with the "lipstick on a pig" comment? It's not an unheard of expression, and only means that the same old thing packaged a different way is still the same old thing. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  17. Define 'developed' and 'healthcare' in this context. South Africa is regarded by most as a developing nation. To my knowledge every South African child up to the age of 6 is entitled to free primary healthcare. According to a footnote in the linked source, "South Africa, while providing universal coverage in principle, has not extended universal access in practice to all of its townships." It is possible that South Africa has since fully implemented their universal coverage. I'm not sure how Stephen M. Ayres, M.D., defined "the developed world" in his book. Math tutoring available. 18. I showed that the organizations were biased. Sure, Mike. The Cato Institute knows more about the world's healthcare than WHO. Sadly, you probably actually believe that nonsense. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  19. Exactly my point. The technology doesn't win wars, well led troops do. Since over one fifth of government spending on the military doesn't seem to be effective, perhaps we should find for constructive uses for that funding, such as funding health care or education. 24. Apparently, you don't quite understand what the word infrastructure means. Perhaps a result of not having enough formal education? ------------------------------------------------------ Infrastructure typically refers to the technical structures that support a society, such as roads, water supply, wastewater, power grids, floodmanagement systems, communications (internet, phone lines, broadcasting), and so forth. In the past, these systems have typically been owned and managed by local or central governments this is the short form from wikipedia You could add hospitals and schools to your list, and it would still be far from complete.
