  1. It may be warming and the trends indicate this might be true. My questions are more around who/what is causing it. Looking at "known" history of the planet would "indicate" this "warming" trend is part of the planets natural cycles. There is a reason the GWing alarmist want to name CO2 as a polutant. And that reason is not because it is..... It's so refreshing to find in SC a post on global warming completely devoid of any scientific understanding. Facts are overrated. Thank you, sir. You do your fellow SC readers proud.
  2. I disagree. The thin ice near the edge will recede a lot faster than the thick ice near the poles, won't it? Yes, but the ice does not melt only near the edges. A lot of melting that is not counted via measuring the area delta would be counted by measuring the volume delta. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

  4. It was just a somewhat poorly chosen phrase to acknowledge that McCain hasn't attacked Obama based on the false rumors of Obama being a Muslim. I can't believe it was even newsworthy. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

  6. I've been thinking lately that it would be pretty cool to have an M198, as a conversation piece (and for personal protection). I'm not sure how practical it would be, given Orlando's traffic, but I don't think I'll need the license for concealed carry. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

  12. Absolutely. Sex sells. Dumb, pretty people are almost always more popular than ugly smart people. Unfortunately, our elections are glorified popularity contests. OTOH, I've heard that many ladies find Obama as easy on the eyes as many guys find Palin to be, so the effect won't be one sided. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  13. Actually, we view talk of patriotism as empty political rhetoric. We're not afraid of patriotism; we're just not naïve enough to be wooed by such claims. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  14. Supporting separation of church and state is a far cry from supporting book banning, counselor. The former is supporting the first amendment. The latter is attacking it. I'm surprised you don't respect precedent of SCOTUS. States don't have a right to secede. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

  16. fixed it for ya. it's not a potential human being, it's a human being with potential. the whole reason i posted here in this thread was to illustrate the incredible disconnect or illogic that is not even remotely caught or perceived by people when they say that they don't know when human life begins yet they are totally fine w/ having an abortion or promoting abortion or condoning abortion. the cognitive dissonance they should be feeling should keep them up at night. the fact that it doesn't is disturbing. and now that we've reached the point of repeating ourselves, it's time to cease, at least for me anyway. [/taste]Assuming the cells are human beings at conception, wouldn't regular sacrifices to Jahveh, in penance for the original sin, get us out of contract with that Jesus guy, so he can get on with enjoying his eternity while we get on with our lives without any obligation to him? Catholics worldwide could divvy up the assets of the Roman Catholic Church, stimulating the economy worldwide, promoting economic growth and offering indisputable proof of Jahveh's existence. That would be a good thing, right?[taste] Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  17. I'll just say I completely disagree. Disagree all you'd like; you'll still be wrong. It's basic logic, basic set theory. You're entitled to your own opinion, just not your own facts. You said you favor same sex couples' right to marry. Does that mean you are in a same sex partnership and wish to marry? By your logic, it does. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! 18. If A then B does not imply if B then A. Roe v. Wade is not about being pro-abortion or anti-abortion. It is about having the choice available to females who find themselves in the difficult situation of an unwanted pregnancy. Not everyone who favors the choice be made by individuals favors all the choices available. They don't have to support abortion to recognize that it is not their choice to make until they find themselves in the same situation. Pro-choice does not imply pro-abortion. Anti-abortion does not imply anti-choice. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  19. Fixed it for you. That was a very lame attempt to disparage those who disagree with you. No I said it right, you are either pro (for) abortion or anti (against) abortion. Perhaps, but that would mean that many anti-abortion people are pro-choice, simply because they do not presume themselves qualified to make value statements for others. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  20. Pro-choice is acknowledging that a person's body is that person's own, and should a female conceive, the government should not be able to dictate to her that she must have the baby, that she cannot terminate the pregnancy. Pro-choice favors having options. The relative value of those options might vary from individual to individual, but those values are decided on by the individual, not the government. Pro-abortion is favoring abortion in the event of unexpected pregnancy, as a default strategy. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  21. It's no more of an exaggeration than claiming pro-choice is the same as pro-abortion. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  22. dude, you're complaining about uneducated people, not being able to speak correctly or to find the cheapest kitty litter in the store, but you can't even divide 50 by 35 without using a calculator?!?! Are you kidding? 1.3, done just now with no calculator. Without calculator: it's between 1.4 and 1.5. {33 1/3 * 15 = 500, 35 * 15 = 525, 25 < 35} If that's not close enough, it's easy to get a more precise answer. {25/35 = 5/7, 50/35 = 1.4 + (1 - 5/7)*(1.5-1.4)} So 50/35 is exactly 2/7 of the way from exactly 1.4 to exactly 1.5. Very quick and easy in my head, yet very messy on paper. On paper: 50 / 35 = 1 R15 150 / 35 = 4 R10 100 / 35 = 2 R30 300 / 35 = 8 R20 200 / 35 = 5 R25 250 / 35 = 7 R5 50 / 35 = 1 R15 With a calculator, it's 1.42857142857…. Based on getting the same answer with three different methods, I'm going to say that you're incorrect with your 1.3 answer. Which gives 27 lbs. for $9.87 compared to 8 lbs. for $3.00, the approximate equivalent to 27 lbs. for $10 compared to 8 lbs. for $3.00. With a common denominator, 81 lbs. for $30 or 80 lbs. for $30, thus the 27 lbs. for $10.00 is cheaper per pound than 35 lbs. for $12.87, but only very slightly so. Since our approximation slightly increased the cost of the first option by close to $0.005 per pound, we don't need to go any further. I'll be the fist to argue that there is little value in knowing how to work out mathematics problems on paper if one can work them out with a calculator. That does not extend to claiming that it is not important to be able to do easy mathematical problems in one's head. One should not need a calculator or paper, for example, to determine the first derivative of (cos(x - pi/2) + sqrt(17)). OTOH, solving x^2 +x = 1, for x, would probably require most people to use paper & pencil or a calculator, unless they happened to recognize the pattern immediately (in which case, the solutions stand out and appear obvious). That highlights two separate problems. First, there is the problem of people who never learn maths beyond basic arithmetic/Algebra. IMO, demonstrating a basic understanding of Calculus should be a graduation requirement for every U.S. secondary school student. Second, there is the problem of knowledge retention. I blame this, in part, on grading methods in the U.S. (and presumably other places). In maths classes, substantial credit is given for knowledge retention until the next exam, which much less credit being given for retention through the end of the course. A more objective metric would be basing the grade 100% on a comprehensive final. How much knowledge is still retained at the end of the semester? If students can't retain knowledge that long, how can we expect them to retain knowledge after they graduate and enter college or the workplace? While we're on the topic of numbers, do you have that money you owe me? Proposing a bet, losing, and failing to pay off the wager is not a sign of personal integrity, but rather lack thereof. 23. Wrong. What the U.S. government does (BTW, not the "US" government--please ) is TAX citizens to pay for the things that government, it is agreed, is supposed to provide. That is, by definition, resource distribution. I don't believe anyone said it was. You are dead wrong about that. But COMMUNISM WOULD do that. (Except, human nature being what it is will never in a hundred thousand years allow for that to happen in a real-world practical sense.) Communism (with little c) will never work, except on paper, same as capitalism w/o government regulation. Having said that, it would not require a totalitarian government. A democracy would work equally well (or badly) as a totalitarian system. Are you ever going to pay back that money you owe me, or are you going to continue giving excuses? Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  24. No. Community is the basis of communism. Redistribution of resources is what virtually every government does, including the US government since its inception. That would be an incorrect definition of communism. Communism (with little c) is an economic system. It does not imply a totalitarian government. (In its ideal form, as described by Marx, there would be no need for government, very similar to, ironically, the libertarian ideal.) Nor does capitalism preclude a totalitarian government. Sadly, it's an all too common error to see government and economic systems equated to one another. Sometimes, sometimes not. It all depends on what the businesses are empowered to do. I suspect it would do so in a greater manner than corporate controlled healthcare does, but universal healthcare does not imply government controlled healthcare. Math tutoring available.
