I'm considering buying a new bike. I have an old Alpine road bike that I rarely ride, because I don't like road bikes much. I had a 1996 Cannondale F500 mountain bike (hard tail with Head Shock front suspension) that I put 2000-3000 miles on before selling it for jump money several years back. I want another hard tail. I've never ridden a dual suspension mountain bike that I particularly liked. I loved my Cannondale's frame, although the components left a lot to be desired, and I often found myself adjusting spokes to keep the wheels true. I'm considering a Motobecane Outcast 29, which I can pick up new for about $370 shipped. It appears to use all low-end components, though, and also seems to be a little bit heavy. Alternately, I can get just the frame for $185 shipped, which would require I purchase all the other parts separately, but allow me to choose components better suited to my wants and needs. The very first change I'll make to a complete bike is adding street slicks. I don't have much experience with Motobecane bikes. I rode a friend's front suspension hard tail for a mile or two a couple years back, but that's it. I did like that bike very much. I also have no experience with 29 inch wheel bikes. On paper, they seem to have strengths well suited to my riding style, which is fairly aggressive on the streets and single track but a little bit more conservative on technical trails and downhills. I'm also not sure how well I'll like a single speed bike, but I assume I can add chain rings, a cluster, and derailleurs later if I find I don't like single speed. I am not set on the Motobecane, and am open to suggestions of other brands and models. I would also appreciate advice and suggestions about components. I'd like to keep the weight down, but more importantly, I'm looking for the most bang for my buck, since I'm trying to keep the total cost down without making significant sacrifices with respect to quality. I anticipate most of my riding to be on the street, but I might get back into riding on trails if I have a mountain bike. However, I'll consider other types of bikes if they seem to fit my needs better. The bike will likely be my primary (but not my only) means of transportation. I want to stay under $500, but might be willing to pay a little bit more if given a compelling reason. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

While back in my hometown for the holidays, I was informed of the city's new red light cameras. I was told (but did not verify) that the city pays to a private company $1 million per year for each camera and its associated maintenance. I doubt the resulting fines are sufficient to recoup the costs. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -

What progression method did you use to become a skydiver
jcd11235 replied to No_Phear's topic in The Bonfire
Yeah, typo. No, it wasn't a typo. You had it right the first time. IAF (instructor assisted freefall) is a tandem to AFF progression. Typically, the jumps for the first three AFF levels are replaced by tandems with specific learning objectives for each jump. After the tandems, the progression is essentially identical to AFF. IAD is instructor assisted deployment. IAD progression is nearly identical to to static line progression. However, with IAD, the first five jumps are not static line deployments. Instead, the IAD instructor removes the stunt's pilot chute prior to climb out, and then throws the pilot chute as the student exits (lets go of the strut on a 182). I went through the IAD progression. I've also worked on an dropzone that utilized the AFF progression and a dropzone that utilized the IAF progression. Of the three, IAF is the one I would recommend to any friends or family who might want to learn to skydive, assuming that instructor of equal ability are available for each discipline when/if that time comes. I assume, based on your post, that you're unfamiliar with the buy low, sell high investment strategy? The bailout loans are by no means a guaranteed loss. Granted, they are not a guaranteed profit, either, but the potential is there, and it's not exactly a long shot either, especially if one considers the cost of doing nothing. Math tutoring available. That was an interesting video, especially with the benefit of a couple years of hindsight. Thanks for posting it. Mr. Schiff made some very reasonable observations and comments, but in those comments he stayed away from the most important tenet of Austrian economic theory, the belief that any government regulation or intervention in the economy is bad. It's interesting that you keep bringing up the CRA as though it's a bad thing, in spite of the fact that evidence has been provided suggesting that properties with mortgages from CRA banks have been less likely to go through foreclosure than properties mortgaged through non-CRA lenders. Why do I not find your position surprising? Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Right, because outsourced work on behalf of the company is totally irrelevant. It's terribly unfortunate for your argument that Raines isn't involved in the Obama campaign. By your logic, everyone Obama has ever known is involved in his campaign. If that's the case, then it says something extremely positive about Obama as a candidate, don't you think? Do you think it was the executives or the lobbyists that lobbied for the deregulation that ushered in the financial crisis? A hitman is no less guilty than the guy who puts out the contract, figuratively speaking. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

It sounds like McCain builds winning coalitions as well as Bush does. Did McCain pretend to land on an aircraft carrier just before he declared his success? Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -

I don't know why - why don't you explain it? I already did once, with numbers. I'm not doing it again. Scroll up-thread. Do you think it might have something to do with the fact that Anchorage's population is over 47 times that of Wasilla? Almost 39% of Alaska's population lives in Anchorage, compared to less than 0.82% that live in Wasilla. (Can you handle verifying that arithmetic by yourself, or do you need someone to hold your hand and walk you through the steps?) Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

So you believe that we should execute people with only suspicion that they'll commit a crime? I guess that demonstrates how little value you recognize in the Constitution. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Compare the amount Wasilla's (then) police chief estimated the new legislation would cost with the amount in your attached document. Why don't they come close to matching? Only suspicion and rumor? You must have missed the part in the cited article where Croft explicitly stated that Wasilla's policy was among the motivator's to propose the bill. We have zero reason to believe that Wasilla would have or should have been mentioned in the minutes, despite being a reason for the legislation. Your demand for documented proof why the city wasn't mentioned is absurd. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

If you don't understand the math well enough, that's your own problem. Ah, I see - so Wasilia's policy was SO important that Croft had to submit the bill to the legislature, but NOT so important as to be mentioned in the minutes of the discussion. Yes, but since Wasilla was not the only municipality with such a policy, it would be even less likely the name would come up in the minutes. The bill's sponsor even said what motivated him to propose the bill. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Help me try to understand this re: Blacks voting for Obama
jcd11235 replied to Muenkel's topic in Speakers Corner
It's funny how many people think that Obama's supporters base their support on race. Projection, I suppose. It's funny to watch Obama's supporters constantly accuse his detractors of racism. Even funnier to watch McCain supporters show off their lack of reading comprehension. If you read the conversation, you'll see that the poster I replied to was the one that made the claim that Obama supporters support him because of his race. Math tutoring available. When did I claim this? When you claimed that stance on abortion was a worthy litmus test, but race was not. I don't dispute that you have that right. I never claimed they did. It was you who claimed yours were more reasonable than others'. Personally, I think neither being black (or white) nor being anti-choice is sufficient justification to earn a vote, but I believe everyone can decide for themselves who to vote for.
