  1. What? You mean Skydivers aren't a legally protected minority group?? WTF, man??
  2. At least twice I've been told to keep good notes on the projects I work on "just in case something happens" to me.

    Saw III

Dude. It's so wicked. Even after hearing people talk about how wicked it is, I was still shocked.

    Saw III

Finally saw it. Holy shit, it was really gruesome.
  5. For real?! YAY! Wait for me...I wanna see!

    Saw III

Awesome! I can't WAIT! Hopefully I'll see it tonight. Or tomorrow.
  7. cell phone use in freefall? Can you elaborate on that? A friend of mine took his cell phone after he landed out 2 times and had to walk back one time (he is student too...). so I might consider that. But in freefall? "YEEES HUN I WILL BE HOME SOOOOON" The ONE time I took my cell phone with me on a jump, I put it in a pocket directly beneath my chest strap and I had a wickedly hard opening which jammed my phone into my ribs. My ribs hurt for like 6 weeks after. Doh!

Ok, I can see that. I guess I thought part 1 was a better mind fuck than part 2.
  9. a dodge worthy of Speakers Corner. Come on. I totally agree with quack....however, I also feel that there is at least SOME value in comparing risks - even if it amounts to comparing apples to oranges.
  10. Proving my point perfectly, skydiving is more dangerous than driving. One of the principles of risk assessment is that a single number cannot be used to satisfactorily characterize a risk, nor to set one risk as being higher than another. As one author has stated, "no numerical rating of risks can be strictly objective, because individual ratings are influenced by inherently subjective values" (Thomas and Hrudey, 1997). So, even with all of the statistics being thrown about, it ends up being a comparison based on individual experiences, perceptions, etc. Interesting discussion, though.

HOW could you like II more than I?? I thought the first one way better.

That's kinda what I'm expecting. But I'm totally looking forward to it!!

Okay, really, is it THAT gnarly?? I remember people saying the Blair Witch Project was nauseating because of the shaky video...and that was soooo nothing. Saw I and II definitely shocked me (not an easy thing to do), but I wasn't anywhere near passing out.
  14. Sorry...I just get frustrated when disagreement develops over an issue where no one is actually disagreeing. (My last post wasn't directed solely at you, btw.)
  15. Good grief. Clearly, I need to add emphasis to the key portions of my post: For the record, I do NOT think that skydiving is safer than driving. The point I was trying (apparently poorly) to make is that just because someone (e.g. ME) has known more people to die driving than skydiving, that experience, in itself, does not mean skydiving is safe. On the other hand, just because a person has had the opposite experience, that, in itself, does not make skydiving dangerous. In other words, individual experiences will vary which is why a broad statistical analysis is a more accurate way to assess danger than by relying anecdotal evidence. Perhaps my statement "interesting perspective" gave off an adversarial vibe. If so, that was unintentional. All I meant, literally, was that your post was, well, interesting. Regardless, I'm totally at a loss as to how the hell my original post was interpreted to mean skydiving is safer than driving. Perhaps someone could explain to me...
  16. Well, Nerd, your exposure to skydiving is 1/14th of your exposure to driving. I've been around 61 years and have known 3 driving fatalities. I've been skydiving 10 years and have known 9 skydiving fatalities. So I guess my experience mirrors Roger's. Actually, I'm really curious...what point did you think I was trying to make?
  17. I guess I don't follow how whuffo perception of skydiving as a dangerous activity relates to my post...but that's okay.
  18. What's your point? That individual experiences ARE more relevant than statistical approaches to defining an activity as dangerous?
  19. Well shit, I guess my point is entirely invalid then. Either that, or you missed my point entirely. Doh!
  20. Interesting perspective. But my first reaction is that I'm 28 and been skydiving for 2 years. I've not yet personally known anyone who died skydiving, but I have personally known 3 people who died driving. I guess that's why most people will take a statistical approach to defining activities as "dangerous"; individual experiences will vary.
  21. Hypothetical discussions about the relative safety and/or danger of skydiving always annoys me and fascinates me at the same time. One the one hand, who cares whether it's safer that driving? Skydivers aren't dropping like flies, so it's obviously not like Russian roulette. Then again, it's really interesting to think about the ways in which we assess danger and acceptable risks. Anyhoo...that was mostly me just thinking aloud. Moving on...
