Healthy baby born to mom after accident Woman learned she was pregnant in ER after surviving skydiving incident. By Sarah Overstreet News-Leader Richard Tanner West earned an eight and a nine on his two APGAR tests — which assess the health of newborn children immediately after childbirth — despite falling 10,000 feet and hitting the ground at 50 mph. Of course, he had only been a teeny guy on this earth, and protected in Mom's womb on Oct. 9, when Shayna Richardson of Joplin "eggshelled" her face, slamming into the earth in a skydiving accident in Siloam Springs, Ark. "We had no idea I was pregnant the day of the accident, but found out that day in the ER," said Shayna, now Shayna West after marrying Tanner's father, Rick West, in April. "They said if (Tanner) had been much further along, he wouldn't have survived the impact," Shayna said Friday from her home in Joplin. Doctors also worried about the effect of the medications she had to take during her recovery, the CAT scans, X-rays and other medical treatment she had to undergo. But West gave birth to a strapping (7 pounds, 13 ounces, 19 inches) baby boy on Tuesday, and everything's going great for the family. "I'm going to spend the majority of my time with Tanner," Shayna said. "I'm looking at outside sales and travel agency work that I can do from home. Rick's getting ready to go to electronics school ... and start working in a computer job." After her amazing survival, numerous media outlets told her story. Now that Tanner's here, she's appeared on CBS's "Early Show" and Fox's "Inside Edition." As other television programs learn of the healthy, sky-falling newborn, others will undoubtedly follow. Despite her ordeal, Shayna West says she's been extremely lucky in the care she's been given. A skydiving friend, Dr. Steve Garcia of Fayetteville, Ark., made the dental partials she's been wearing, charging her nothing. Dr. Alan Meltzer, a Voorhees, N.J., periodontist, will begin her dental implant surgery in October — also free. "He found me in one of the magazines I was in," Shayna said. "He does cosmetic dental work on celebrities." After the accident, doctors put 15 metal plates in her face. Along with her facial injuries, the 2002 Ash Grove High School graduate fractured her fibula and her pelvis in two places. She says she still needs plastic surgery under her eyes and laser scar surgery "to look like I used to," but doesn't have the money for that yet. And will she skydive again, after all she's been through? The answer is the same as it was when she talked to the News-Leader in December: You bet. "My doctor told me that six weeks after my baby is born I can jump again. I'm going to do a tandem jump (jumping with another skydiver) just to get my feet back on the ground ... . I'm not afraid of going back. I'll do my tandem, then I'll be all right." But her tandem partner won't be husband Rick, also an experienced jumper. "We both agreed not to have Mommy and Daddy strapped into one parachute."

Kim, I request you no longer, ever!!!! reply to any message I ever write, or comment on as a representative for Performance Design. I have been quite pleased with my purchase with PD. Your poor reflection, your speculation, your personal taunts via pm, your personal viewpoints do not come close close to the kind words I've ever had to say about PD to anyone who has ever asked, nor do they equate to the $ two thousand five hundred dollars American I spent with PD for both a main and reserve canopy. I could have gone with Aerodyne which was what I was personally leaning towards at the time of my purchase. Your pissy words via PM as to being a thread killer rank me late at night. The last post in this thread was my kind words towards PD which ended the thread. Not your smarmy taunts via PM. You are a poor representation for PD in such a public forum, your comments both publicly and privately belay the goodwill I've always felt towards your employer, Performance Design. Only your actions have proven this thru this thread or PM to me. I strongly regret having to say this. It's not a weak personal attack as you have made the claim via PM about me personally. You wished to equate my comments as a personal attack upon you or PD. I stated fact. PD canopies are made in Honduras, at 4:30pm in the afternoon, a weekday, the day I was there, PD was a ghost-town closing down, everyone wished to leave PD including you when i called you from the restaurant at Skydive Deland. Get a grip, next time do not attack your (which are not personally yours, but Performance Designs) paying customers in such a manner in a public forum or via PM. As I mentioned personally, "I" was unable to fulfill my request for a demo reserve PDR193 because my father is dying of cancer in NYC. Yes "I" and not PD. Understand me once again "I" was unable to fulfill my request for a PDR193.... not PD. Do not try to shame me over a petty matter. I had to travel to NYC to be with him during the surgeries at LIJ and the following recovery. Had I know that at the time. I would have never, quite frankly ever in retrospect contacted you (or PD) in the first place. My monies were better spent elsewhere. I've spent enough with PD. I will not spend a single dollar with PD based upon your comments in the future. Lecture whoever you may please but do not lecture me now or in the future, ever. Since you have the internal PD numbers and percentages, what is the percentage of canopies produced in PD south America versus PD north America for the calender year 04 & 05 for the US market. I'll will argue that issue with you once I have the facts, yearly reports & production schedules... never-mind, I do not care, I have been quite pleased with the PD products I've purchased. As I stated, your tone ranks me personally, I am not a child. I do not know who you think you are talking to. Leave me alone, quite frankly forever! Take you little sheep avatar in heels and garters and run off. I wish to never see you or a comment from you again. The only comments I wish to see will on PD letterhead documents. For your information I support development in Honduras or South America for that matter. I have been pleased with the PD products I have purchased. I would buy them again in the future... subject to never seeing or hearing a word from you or reading a PM you've sent me on dropzone.com, the international forum you've claimed it to be.... cheers!! Sincerely, JeepDiver Thomas J. Swierski

I'll send you a pm Kim. I am out of state in New York City, the reason for my trip up here has not been my own. I love my PD Sabre2!! I wasn't concerned in the least, or upset, as I mentioned or may have failed to, it appeared that it was late in the day (4:30' or so) when I did arrive. It also appeared that the cleaning staff was in full swing cleaning all the work areas. I spent far to much time in the sun at Deland that afternoon jumping but with the limited time I had I did want to visit the PD factory and get my PD t-shirt. I was on my way to Z-Hills when I stopped in. I've sent my PM to Kim. Kim it was my pleasure to meet you then. Dads very sick. I'm here. I'm not upset or spooked about anything. When I get the chance I'll take you up on the offer of the tour. I had a great time when I was there and I look forward to the tour in the future.

My PD Sabre2 was not made in the USA. Production date 11-05 A few weeks ago I stopped in at the PD factory and no work was being done at any of the shop tables... although it was towards the end of the day. I beleive final inspection is all that is done at the shop in Deland any longer. Canopy production has been moved overseas.

I'm wondering if Jeb's cam was recording. If I had to venture a guess I'd say 98% likely. I've only read of the resisting and assault charges in the newspapers. Since it was a helmet-cam I'll await judgement until I see it or it's released. I would also guess it is similar to the footage of the NYC Palace jump where he can be heard quite cleary talking and with the ESB attempt the helmet-cam footage if there is any will more than likely clear the matter up in a court of law. The ledge of the ESB eightysix stories above the street does put a person at an extreme disadvantage of assaulting anyone.

I think this is what Jeb has to say about it all. - Jeb Corliss sticks out his tongue as he meets his girlfriend, Anber Mekush, following his release on bail after he was charged with reckless endangerment, assault and resisting arrest for trying to parachute off the Empire State Building yesterday. Corliss, 30, is one of the biggest risk takers in the underground sport of BASE jumping - an acronym that stands for Bridge, Antenna, Span and Earth jumping. - Jumpin' jerk dreamt of being a flying fool BY BARBARA ROSS and JOSE MARTINEZ DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS Jumper Jebb Corliss and gal pal Amber Mekush taunt onlookers yesterday. The joker who tried to parachute from the Empire State Building insisted yesterday he was only trying to live out a high-flying fantasy. A day after being snatched from the edge of the 86th-floor observation deck, Jebb Corliss tried to paint himself as a law-abiding citizen who, for two years, had mapped out each step of his planned plunge onto Fifth Ave. at rush hour. "I am a BASE [Bridge, Antenna, Span and Earth] jumper, that's what I do," Corliss said outside Manhattan Supreme Court, after being released on $3,000 bail. "And one of my dreams was flying off the Empire State Building." The TV-stunt-show star's fantasy was foiled when cops and security guards - who had been tipped off that there might be a jump - nabbed him more than 1,000 feet above the city streets. Things only got worse for Corliss when he got canned by the Discovery Channel, on which he hosted "Stunt Junkies." The network said it had no clue about his plan, even though Corliss came equipped with a pricey camera to film his descent. Prosecutors said that Corliss wore a phony mustache and a fat suit into the building before slipping into a rest room and donning his parachute. "No one at the network had any knowledge of Jebb Corliss' activities at the Empire State Building," the Discovery Channel said in a statement. "We are beyond disappointed at his serious lack of judgment and his reckless behavior." But defense attorney Mel Sachs said his client - a star of BASE jumping - had plotted his dive with safety in mind. Corliss had studied wind speeds and knew how long it would take him to reach Fifth Ave., Sachs said. In addition, he had timed the traffic-light patterns so that a man in a parachute wouldn't distract motorists, Sachs said. "It would still be red when he landed," Sachs said. The 30-year-old daredevil from California apologized for creating a stir atop the city's most famous building, and said he received "wonderful" treatment from the NYPD. But he added that his future stunts would take place elsewhere. "I am finished with New York as far as BASE jumping is concerned," Corliss said. Instead, the jumping jerk - whose past conquests included the Petronas Towers in Malaysia - had to settle for a limp and another line on his rap sheet

I agree with you, so close yet so far. Has to suck, it would have been the most amazing feat with digital video footage! I'm wondering who the Judas was/is? I wish he would have pulled it off.

Empire State parachuter charged with reckless endangerment April 28, 2006, 6:14 PM EDT NEW YORK -- A television series host who tried to parachute from the Empire State Building in a stunt he wanted to film for his show was released on bail Friday after being arraigned on charges of reckless endangerment, resisting arrest and other offenses. J. Ray Corliss IV, whose first name is Jeb, made the $3,000 bail set by a judge and walked out of a Manhattan courthouse with his lawyer and a friend. Corliss, of Malibu, Calif., hosts the Discovery Channel show "Stunt Junkies." Authorities said he got through Empire State Building security wearing an elaborate mask and a fat suit that concealed a parachute. When he got to the building's 86th floor, he took off the disguise and tried to pull off his stunt, prosecutors said. Security officials had been warned of a possible jumper and were able to spot him and keep him from jumping, authorities said. Police arrived, threw a net over Corliss and handcuffed him before reeling him in. His lawyer, Mel Sachs, told the judge that his 30-year-old client had no criminal record and lives with his parents. Sachs said Corliss had never done a stunt for his own show and wanted to record the Empire State Building jump with a camera attached to his helmet. Sachs said that when Corliss tried the stunt, he "exercised all safety precautions." "He had planned and calculated so no one would be injured," he said. Sachs said Corliss wasn't resisting arrest and claimed that the way the police grabbed his client put him in a dangerous position. He said that if the parachute had opened, it could have "torn his arms off." The judge ordered a return date of Aug. 15. - I'm happy he's out and only faces reckless endangerment charges.

I was under the impression the the reason he was hired by The Discovery Channel as a host was his perceived lack of judgment and his historical reckless behavior. I heard he went to central booking at 2:00am, any idea where he is now?

Discovery Dumps Corliss By John Eggerton -- Broadcasting & Cable, 4/28/2006 3:38:00 PM Discovery Channel has dumped Jeb Corliss from its Stunt Junkies series after the host tried, unsuccessfully, to jump from the Empire State Building. In a statement released Friday, the company said: "We are beyond disappointed at his serious lack of judgment and his reckless behavior. As such, Mr. Corliss will not be associated with any future Discovery Networks projects including future episodes of Stunt Junkies." The show, produced by CBS Productions, "operates under the most stringent regulations to ensure the safety of the athletes participating as well as the production crew," said the channel in a statement. "The network requires its producers to obtain all the necessary permits and permissions from local authorities prior to filming. No one at the network had any knowledge of Jeb Corliss's activities at the Empire State Building. Corliss was attempting a "base jump" from the 86th floor observation deck of the Manhattan skyscraper. He entered the building in a a rubber mask and a foam fat suit to diguise his parachute and video gear. Building staff had been tipped to the stunt and a guard grabbed Corliss’ leg as he climbed over a security fence before he could jump. The stroy became national news fodder, with video of police extracting Corliss from his perch and some debate over whether he would have to pay for the piece of iron railing that was removed to get him--he had been handcuffed to the fence.--John M. Higgins contributed to this story.

My mindwarp is a newer model with the chin strap mounted on the inside. I worry about the plane crashing on takeoff, have you ever considered that before?

Can you point out the post? The most recent one I see from Jeb was back in January. It appears it was my mistake Tom. A post was made yesterday to a thread he comented on awhile back. Sorry. I had mistaken his login yesterday at "Last Logon: Apr 27, 2006, 4:43 PM" as a reference to the post I saw when I searched messages.

I'm curious when the hell did Jeb have time yesterday to post to the Wingsuit forum? From an office in the ESB? I can't wait to hear the whole story of this. Damn shame someone let the cat out of the bag before he could pull it off.

http://www.nydailynews.com/ips_rich_content/487-frontbig0428.jpg He does appear to be on the ledge ready to turn around and jump from the look of the photo on the NY Daily News Cover. From what I've read they got him by the harness, legs, arms and then handcuffed him to the fence.
