BillyVance's "You Can't Make This Up" News Stories Thread
gowlerk replied to BillyVance's topic in The Bonfire
I'm not sure about "can't make this up" status. I think this is pretty much a standard porn plot come to real life. It's been made up many times! Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free. -
Rental gear and damage/loss responsibility
gowlerk replied to Chemtrail's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
My answer that the DZ is responsible is assuming that the customer is paying the regular $30 or $25 plus pack rate that applies to students. If that is the case, then the DZ should be taking the risk. If there is a different deal in place, all parties need to be aware of it beforehand. Sometimes I rent transition gear to newer jumpers to get them over the hump to smaller canopies that they will buy as first gear. I will always put down in writing the replacement cost of losing components as well as the cost if they outright lose a whole rig. They don't have to agree to this. They have the option of leaving the rig on the rental rack and using it when they want if it is available. But then they pay full student rental price, and I assume the risk myself. Yes Wendy, I've got mine, and if everyone else got theirs, we would be in a much better place. It can be done, I did it. My high school graduation gift was some soft luggage and a watch; luggage to pack up my shit and a watch so I would not miss my bus. Five days after graduating high school, I was gone. No car, no college, no money. 34 years later, and after a lot of hard work and even more deferred gratification, I am semi-retired and living comfortably. Why? Because I had to. I had no trust fund to fall back on, no welfare check, I could not even rely on my wit, charm and intelligence (as Kallend and BillV are fond of pointing out I am bereft of all of them), I just worked hard, SAVED and INVESTED. It's not that hard. Take the money from a daily pack of cigarettes and a six pack of beer and save/invest it. Forgo the new BMW and drive a ten year old used Honda if you want a Mercedes in the future. You or someone else may have the ability to do that. But not if you happen to have the misfortune of having bad health somewhere along your journey. And even now, if you get seriously ill all your hard work will go down the tubes quickly. You will exhaust whatever insurance you have and then you will drain your bank account and have to sell your assets. It happens all the time to good successful people like you. You are not special, the system will chew you up and spit you out. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

Race Relations in America, Getting Better or Worse?
gowlerk replied to ridestrong's topic in Speakers Corner
Is this . . . " They "? I'd look for a white power hate video to counter that. But it's so obvious that I don't need to bother.... Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free. -
It is true. The 1% from Canada go to the USA to experience the best of care. But it won't help you. You can't afford it. If you get sick the co-pays will likely bankrupt you. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

Rental gear and damage/loss responsibility
gowlerk replied to Chemtrail's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
If you are paying the standard $25 to $30 per jump that most DZs charge to rent student gear all the risks go to the DZ. We charge $30 and we factor those potential losses into the price. Sometimes I rent gear seasonally to someone for a much better price, but then I get the user to agree in writing to be responsible for loss. If you did not sign or at least verbally agree to assuming the risk of loss then you are not responsible. The same thing goes for handles thrown away. DZs charge enough for rental to pay for them. The last thing I want is young inexperienced jumpers and students factoring in the cost of equipment before they cutaway. I found it pretty simple. And free. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

All the other western societies do it, and you will manage too. You already spend more per capita on health care than anyone else. Your system is very inefficient. But you are correct, fear, jealousy and suspicion of others is what holds you back. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

Race Relations in America, Getting Better or Worse?
gowlerk replied to ridestrong's topic in Speakers Corner
That's only partly true. You can still pretty accurately predict the financial class of a person by their skin colour. That is statistically speaking. I know stats can be used to mislead, but this one is pretty clear. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free. -
' Yup, Obamacare is a POS that can not continue in it's present form. It was what could get through your chicken shit weak kneed congress at the time. Even though D's were in the majority too many of them knuckled under to the threat of being called socialists willing to help the undeserving lower classes get healthcare. Politics is after all, the art of the possible. But don't worry, when the inevitable financial collapse comes your country will be forced to fix it. Race Relations in America, Getting Better or Worse?
gowlerk replied to ridestrong's topic in Speakers Corner
Race relations in America are definitely improving. Despite the recent events. You have to consider the starting point. As in slavery followed by Jim Crow. Y'all still have a lot of work to do, but at least you're talking about it. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free. -
Before you get too angry and start to feel all resentful, go listen to Billie Holliday sing "Strange Fruit". There is a long history of extra judicial killing of black men in America. Black people are simply saying "we aren't going to take it any more". If you can't understand that, it's because you have chosen not to. There is and will be a lot of passion here. In the light of day I now see it as very similar to what Dylan Roof did. A person of one race targeted members of another race because of the hatred he felt. Neither of these people had even the slightest justification. And neither is a true representative of their people. The main reason behind the two recent police shootings is fear. Both sides are now going to have even more fear. As well as more anger. Are you kidding? There is no "but" here. Tonight several officers died, all were innocent. Just doing their jobs. They did nothing to deserve to die, and they died in service of their community. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

Can someone please explain the logic behind this to me?
gowlerk replied to turtlespeed's topic in Speakers Corner
???? A "rap sheet" usually refers to a criminal record. Bush had a known history of drug and alcohol abuse, and he used his family connections to evade serving in Vietnam. What the hell are you talking about? He got a free ride on his name. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free. -
Ya, I'm sure xenophobic gun lovin' misogynistic christian conservatives are somehow to blame. . . It sounds like two individuals are to blame. You have to put the blame on the guilty, not the innocent. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

Words can not express my sadness. No excuse, no reason can even begin to explain this act of terrorism. This is not an act of protest. The protest was peaceful. I hope this does not mark the beginning of a long hot summer. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

Should there be more wingsuit regulations?
gowlerk replied to Coleman's topic in Safety and Training
I think we need a thread about canopy size regulations. Nanny state style. After that we can go after wingsuits. Skydiving is an adult sport folks. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free. -
The fact is both Bush and Blair first decided on making war in Iraq, then went about finding a way to justify it. It was easy for Bush to convince America because 9/11 was still very fresh and Americans wanted to kick some Islamic butt, especially Arab Islamic butt. All he had to do was hint that Saddam was a "terrorist". Facts mattered not one whit. Blair's motivation I don't know, but he was definitely dishonest. Yes, those "free stuff from the government" people who were denied coverage because of preexisting conditions: http://khn.org/news/preexisting-condition-consumers-insurance-obamacare-marketplaces/ Yes that would be the "sick" component of "old, sick and poor" So... it's not a good thing that old and sick people are being helped more than young and healthy people by Obamacare? Because, y'know, I kinda thought that was the whole point of medicine in general. Similarly, helping poor people who didn't have good coverage get better coverage was, I believe, closer to the intention of Obamacare than helping rich people with good coverage get even better coverage. Sorta thought that was obvious... You need to understand the American right wing white man. When he says "poor" in this context, he is speaking code. He means urban, and black or brown. And "those people" are all about living off the backs of society. Racial hatred is at the root of America's lack of universal healthcare.
