  1. Incorrect. HMA most definately shows wear. Good to know Guess there is just alot of opinions about HMA running around.. FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't.
  2. I had always heard about 400 jumps to replace the HMA's.... I'd be curious to hear what others have to say about this considering my canopy has mostly HMA lines and I do know that they will not show wear.... FGF #??? I miss the sky... 3. Ya know, always wondered why the DoD used the old procedure, i had always just heard all the good about the new procedures, never the bad.. Thanks for this post, very informative, I think I will change my choice when i go to do it after reading this, or atleast look into it further... FGF #??? I miss the sky... 4. This may seem obvious, but it deserves mention... Make sure you use ACE silicon lubricant - NOT Ace silicon glue. The bottles are amazingly similar, and are often found side-by-side in the store. Ace silicon glue on your cuttaway cables would be a bad thing... _Am Ugg, .... Make for one hell of an incident report FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't.
  5. Someone else once told me that, and after thinking about it I agreed, however I still have them.. What I have done though is set them to go off BELOW altitudes that I should be taking action, i.e. if jumping with a group I set them 500 feet after our planned break off, the only way it alerts me of anything is if I have not been paying attention and already gone to far,. .. If solo, it beeps about 500 feet after my pull altitude, once again I should never hear it but it's there if for some reason I get stupid. If I ever hear it go off and it's a surprise to hear it, that's when I know I need to sit one out and think about what my priorities are in the air.. So far only been surprised twice, the two times my alti froze at about 6k before I got another one FGF #??? I miss the sky... 6. At least the SCUBA guys have a buddy. Yea, about that..... Now if only I could keep my buddy near me for a whole dive ALL of the time instead of MOST of the time FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't.
  7. Sorry if this is a re-thread, but I didnt find anything in my quick forum search which answered my question... When you do 3 ring maintenance, I have heard many say that you need to lubricate your cutaway cables.. Any suggestions on what specific lubricant to use, and where I can buy some? Also if you could give a quick run down of specific things that should be checked / looked for during this maintenance that'd be great FGF #??? I miss the sky... 8. Thanks for posting those, some good stuff for us newbies FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't.
  9. Sorry to those who think I should drop this, but I just got this from a checklist posted under the Gear and Rigging forum, ... So, tell me again how my post was advice which would constitute newbies killing eachother with bad advice? (Once again stressing that I posted "talk to your instructor") ?? FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't.
  10. And this 47 jump wonder makes it VERY clear in most of my posts that I am a newbie and I WAS VERY SPECIFIC to say talk to an instructor first... We were talking about a very SPECIFIC malfunction that I have happened to experience, and I happened to make ALOT of bad choices when i did experience it.. SOOOORRRY for sharing my experience so that others may not make the same mistakes that I feel could have resulted in my death had I not been so damn lucky! IMO the attitude you had in your origional post (and the edited one) was uncalled for, but who am I FGF #??? I miss the sky... 11. Little over $12,000 wind tunnel, gear, training, etc. etc. FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't.
  12. Has anyone asked them why they did it? LOL... WTF is this? Go ahead, ask him, WHY ARE YOU SO DAMN CREATIVE!!! Why are you trying to create new things for our sport?.. Why dont you just go ahead and ask why they made the 3 ring too, seems that the sport is just getting too damn safe for the new jumpers, or mabey we are just giving too much of that impression (as people have implied in earlier posts).. Clearly we are not the same breed of skydiver as what you all used to be, which I do agree with my last statement to an extent, however seriously this thread is just getting stupid.. Tandems are the only reason ALOT of us are in this sport today, if you think that's a bad thing go right on ahead, however I personally am DAMN HAPPY that I was able to do this crazy two person under one canopy thing that apparently looks so damn bad on video, because it just happened to get me hooked, and I am really happy that I have not missed out on everything I have experienced so far. Know what? IT WAS WORTH EVERY DAMN PENNY! FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't.
  13. In response to the "high price" of tandems, I'm quite fine with it.. I had to pay that high price for my tandem, as well as my student training.. It's all about paying your dues, we all do it and we all benifit from it.. Let the students continue to support the sport to an extent, looks like it's worked this long.. FGF #??? I miss the sky... 14. :47:umm, yea... Lets see, * First jump end of May * Told bowling is fun too * Graduated AFF * Got my 'A' * New Gear * Lots of other first... FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't.
  15. What was i thinking? I'm just an 900 jump wonder...of course you would know more than me... Umm, ok, chill, wasnt trying to come accross like that! jez.. edited to add: He was questioning a specific canopy problem, just suggested a way that he could see what it's like himself... I know I'm low jump numbers, not trying to second guess anyone here, which is why I also said after talking to instructors eh? FGF #??? I miss the sky... 16. Ahhh, gun EDUCATION... Now that's some good stuff .. FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't.
  17. Or better yet (after talking to instructors) unstow one break and see how the canopy flies then.... Just make sure you unstow both of them in time to do full control checks while your still high enough to realize you have a real problem FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't.
  18. It was probably just a bit less than that.. but the winds were about 10-12 MPH, I did a cross wind landing which had me pointed more WITH the wind than against it, they say a canopy flys about 20mph? so, somewhere in there... Anyway, the whole dive went really bad, the freefall portion of the AFF 3 was horrible, lost my reserve side AFF-I early on and wasnt stable till about 7k, then just went straight down till 5.5k, pulled, looked up everything looked great on the canopy, I was happy that the bad part of that skydive was over with (As were my AFF-I's i'm sure) ... Then I went for my toggles, one of them came unstowed no problems, the other was stuck.. I was pulling on the toggle hard enough to pull the riser down quite aways trying to get it unstowed, no luck.. So now I have a canopy with one brake unstowed and one stowed, which naturally causes a turn with no inputs what-so-ever... I try to do some steering and it seems to me at 4.5k to be plunty controllable.. Anyway, coming in for landing pattern, 1000 feet on first leg, flying kind of straight, never completed the second leg, just flew a path between what the first and second legs should have been, was unable to get the canopy to turn like I had thought.. Was heading straight for a building at pretty high speeds, ended up turning right again (left hand pattern) to miss the building barely, could have kicked it as I went by.. I would have hit right into the side of the building, canopy probably flying over the roof me in the wall.. I remember giving a textbook PLF, other than scraped up hands and sore legs and knee was not hurt.. I was shaking for about an hour afterwords though, then got the ass-chewing of my life for not cutting away.. One thing my instructor told me (or yelled) was that if it does not pass the str8/left/right/flare test get rid of it, my canopy clearly failed this test by not being able to fly straight. He also said it is probably one of the scariest things you will ever do, seeing as how you have a canopy above your head that looks good and has stopped your freefall, and now your going to just chop, re-enter freefall, and pull your last resort... After that experiance, I learned a big lesson, I will not hesitate to cut away something I cant fix again. BTW I was still kinda turning when I landed, didnt get much flare... Lucky it was a 260.. 19. Look for my post in that same thread about what happened when I did just that... I almost killed myself... If it doesnt work RIGHT, trust the reserve. IMO.. Mabey in a bit i'll post the exact wording from my log book and explain the whole thing a little more if you want.. FGF #??? I miss the sky... 20. Still seems odd to me... But whatever.. :) I might have to call my insurance company AGAIN just to verify because I've never heard of this.. When i talked to them I told them that I had about $7,000 worth of gear I wanted insured, regardless of whether it was in my house or on a trip with me or whatever... They told me that was all covered up to 30K by my renters policy regardless.. But, I may bring up the exact question with them now that I've seen this... FGF #??? I miss the sky... 21. I'm curious just how many of the people in this thread bashing wal-mart shop there? It is convenient, so yes I will go there, as well as Target and any number of other stores... I usually do not look for the lowest price, as it is usually a minor difference.. Time saving convenience, YES.. FGF #??? I miss the sky... 22. There are a couple of things that have happened to me that I dont think I will EVER forgive the person who did them to me, mostly because I dont think they will ever ask for forgiveness... Flip side of that being that if those persons did come to me and really sincerly ask for forgiveness, I would forgive them of those things, but I would have to really feel that they mean it and feel bad for what they had done... Burn me again though, and that's it... FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't.
  23. --------------------------- 1. Quit Smoking 100%, AGAIN 2. Since I started skydiving, I started neglecting my other hobbies (i.e. Scuba Diving).. I need to spend some time with those hobbies as well this year, hopefully without taking away from my skydiving time too much ... My last scuba dive was 4 days before my first skydive! It's all fine and dandy I have all my skydiving gear, but now my scuba gear is just collecting dust, what a waste... FGF #??? I miss the sky...
