Umm, dude, Where did you read about this "blowing the levees"? Are the voices in your head telling you this, or do you have something that you can point us to? FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't.

Lets see, on Tuesday: Unless I missed a major story (link please?) Nobody blew shit up.. There was talk as early as tuesday saying that they would blow parts of the levee that are lower to allow water to drain out of the city, let gravity do that thing we all love, but I have not heard if that has happened yet. FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't.

I think I need to program a macro to say this, as many times as I've had to repeat it... THE LOCAL GOV'T IS RESPONSIBLE FOR EVACTUATIONS. They didnt do shit, there are yards of buses under water that could have gotten people out during this evacuation (as spelled out in the state evacuation plan!) The city of NO IMO is run by a bunch of fucking idiots that screwed their own people by not getting them out before the damage was done. There is much more to this than "BUSH and FEMA" shit. FGF #??? I was down in NO a couple weeks ago. The projects are just a bit East of the French Quarter (actually, the FC ends, the projects begin) the superdome is a hike (Mapquest says just under 3.0 miles) from the projects but it is doable, even for a little out of shape people (the walk might do them good anyway). Those who chose not to make that walk I have no sympathy for. They chose to experience the wrath of mother nature and by all accounts, someone had pissed in her wheaties. By all accounts, staying in their gov't funded home they choose to ride out the storm instead of seeking 'higher ground'. (higher ground refers to getting out or a better designed structure other than their residence) At which point the city and state failed by not following their own evacuation plans, firing up some busses, and getting the people the hell out of there. As stated before, yes, thousands of people were unable to leave.. This is *NOT* FEMA's fault. FEMA warned that with current plans 100,000 people would not get out, the *** CITY AND STATE *** should have done something about this. They had a plan to use buses to get people out, they didnt. Not only did their plan *SUCK* but they chose not to follow it. If the city and state would have done their friggin job we would not be in such a big mess to begin with. FGF #??? I miss the sky... And I grew up with guns, and I like guns, and I will own a gun till the day I die.. I'm still alive, never been shot, just like most of the people here in the US. FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't. -
Hi Nate You a submarine dude what do you know about what happens to levee's when they've been overtopped.? Dams have spillways just below the top of the dam so if their in danger of being ovetopped the water is automatically released from this low spot to protect the dam from catistrophic failure. From what we saw on the news one of the newer levee's had a structural failure, and another one was undercut by the storm surge. BTW I don't know squat about submarines and know it R.I.P. And I'm just going off the reports, which say that the practice run they had they showed levees topped off, overflowing, city flooded... In this case, the city can just pump the water out. You cant just pump the water out if the levee breaks, so this does in fact make a different senerio now doesnt it? I fail to see how my submarine job makes me not understand what a levee does, or how a breach in said levee causes what we see today. FGF #??? I miss the sky... Health insurance is one of the scariest things IMO... Who says this guy didnt have health insurance when diagnosed? Mabey he had it through work then, and then when his job moved to mexico so did his coverage leaving him between a rock and a hard place... Honestly, health insurance is one of my biggest fears for when I leave the military. I'm used to getting it for free, I've never had it any other way, and I know that it's something that has run alot of people into bad places.... So, what do we do? Some would say the Gov't should provide everything, ... Now we have a health program like some other countries.. Different topics have been brought up on this, and I think it should stay in those threads... There are ups and downs to both systems, many people dont like Gov't sponsered health, some do.. There is no clear answer, and someone is gonna be upset eather way it goes. This guy is not sitting on his ass, he's working.. I have no problem with the Gov't helping him out.. It's those that truely take handouts and just think that's how it should be as they dont do shit that piss me off. FGF #??? I miss the sky... I sure am happy that the state did it's part, in accordance with its own disaster plan, very evident by that picture of all those buses flooded out in that parking lot. I guess that bush and the federal gov't should have been there to make sure those plans were executed by the state like they should have been? FGF #??? I miss the sky... That is a quote from the above link.. Is this the case with the levees that protected NO? FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't.

The Flood Control Act of 1936 was passed after the flood that devastated Pittsburg. Empowered by that act, the Army Corp of Engineers has officially had the responsibility and authority for flood control nation wide. http://www.usace.army.mil/public.html#Flood Thank you for the information and the link FGF #??? I'm just curious, and this is not a point of arguement, but I'm just seeking knowledge on this aspect of the situation... What makes the federal government responsible for those levees? Are the levees anything like the interstates where funding is provided, but the state is still "responsible" to maintain those interstates? This is something I dont know, and just want a straight forward answer.. I'm not saying the state was responsible for them (atleast not yet ) FGF #??? I miss the sky... FEMA is not a first responder. The flow chart would go: local, county, state, federal. This would mean FEMA is the last responder. And as you move down the list from city to state etc, the size and complexities increase and take longer to get going. Where was the remaining 65% of the LA National Guard? Where were the LA State Police? Where was ANY local or state response? All I saw was the Coast Guard...which is a federal agency by the way. Why did the City of New Orleans not have a command/communication network in place that could survive the exact disaster that they would be required to respond to? Where were they? They were on TV complaining about how they didnt feel like they were getting the support they needed and how hopeless the situation is.. NOT something I'd expect or want to see from my Mayor or Chief of police.. It was really quite pathetic. The Chief of Police in front of a camera making an ass of himself infront of people at the super dome, ... how does that help anything... They are supposed to be leaders, and leaders are suppsoed to be strong regardless of the situation. FGF #??? I miss the sky... They are there to assist and take over after the states plans and resorces have been used / pushed to the limits... But since it takes them a little bit longer to get there than it does for the people already there, the state and city MUST, *MUST* have a plan to atleast do SOMETHING until they get there! FEMA is not the first responder! FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't.

That picture shows how truely pathetic the city emergency plan really is.... manditory evacuation and so many resorces untapped... FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't.

No, for heavens sake, people shouldn't take care of themselves, so then nor should a city. Why then should the feds be able to do it? They're just a country. What we REALLY need is the UN to take care of us. People being responsible for themselves is just tooooo much for you to imagine, isn't it? God forbid there are consequences to not being responsible for one's self. And this time when there consequences are you blame the president. Nice. We wanna be lazy... Simple matter of "survival of the fittest" I think, ... If your too lazy to leave, your left behind, you die. I think alot more people could have left, and just didnt even try. Anyone who tried and could not, well that just shows the breakdown caused by a lack of local evacuation plans. I feel horible for just writing that, but.... Edited to add: It's very unfortionate that people died.. I feel bad for that, I feel bad for the families and friends that have lost loved ones. Very bad situation, very sad. Nobody deserves to die this way. FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't.
