I think the anti-Jew thing is pretty odd..my perception may be slightly skewed by friends working for pro-jewish non-profits...but it now seems that if you criticize Israel it is considered anti-jew and anti-semetic. I also think it rather weird that anything considered anti-jew is considered anti-semetic, which tends to cause the other semetic races to look up from what they were doing and utter a rather confused 'uhh?'. Actually I find the whole concept of anti-semetism odd, but I find the whole Jewish kneejerk overreaction annoying. That might be because my ancestry is an ethnic group that was also cleansed by the germans and is still hated by everyone :) Or simply because im a heartless uncaring bastard. I have a compelling urge to read that story every 2 years or so. I have no idea why but like you I think it's probably my favorite. Whoever mentioned the classics and shorts. They were mentioned on the other thread. I pretty much stopped reading King after Needful Things and Tommyknockers - because it seemed he ran out of interesting things to say. I guess I should pick up the rest of the DT books from the way everyones talking, even though someone already posted the conclusion earlier (thanks!). Dragons Eye I remember throwing across the room due to a lame ending or some sort - since I read it about 18 years ago I dont remember why i thought it was a crap ending though. As an outsider the story that concerned me most was the absolute lack of outcry when the news organizations admitted that they often run video press releases from both political parties without clear attribution - lending viewers to believe that they are watching a legitimate piece of news rather than simply more propoganda. Without babbling on it too much: US TV news finally died the moment the executives demanded it become a profit center rather than a news service funded by the networks other content. But then that dovetails into why I think journalism died and my various internal conflicts corporatism (right to profit vs public responsibility). No that would be considered a form of punishment. Torture would be the use of pain (psychological or physical) to 'encourage' communication. Torture will always occur, regardless of it's legality. Special forces teams are trained to both resist and manage interrogation techniques, as it is understood that it happens regardless of the official stance by the worlds governments. In the same way that chemists and biologists in the US are working with samples of WMDs to "work on defensive measures" which also happen to include studies into dispersal techniques for maximum effectiveness ("so we can plan against it!") (living in the biomed centre of the US I have several friends who do exactly this line of work and have made exactly these comments to me). Rules give us all the veneer of humanity, allow the public to sleep safe at night in a world of bloodless wars and "protecting against insurgent terrorists". The reality is understood by anyone involved or paying attention - in the real world there are no rules except the ones made by the strongest players. Heh wasnt directly aimed at you. I just find the liberal/conservative press angle totally dud. They're all profit driven (in PBS's case funding driven) entities. If they didnt report in a way that appealed to their audiences they wouldnt report that way. To believe that the media is inherently liberal or conservative seems more indicative of your own prejudices and bias than any real or percieved bias present in the media. "THE MEDIA" is not a huge monolithic entity that is part of any giant conspiracy for either side. Objectively I'd say that the US media is utter crap, full of editorializing and infotainment bullshit of relatively little value to anyone. As a transplant here I was struck by the huge amount of fear mongering and relatively little objective news coverage of real issues present in the reporting here - the responses back were ' I like to see my news readers show me how they feel about something'. Which runs contrary to my concept of what the news is about - giving me information without overt coloring from the source itself (impossible, but at least attempted in other countries). Unfortunately it seems that in less than 20 years this style of news reporting is now accepted as an accurate portrayal of "reality", which allows for the kinds of insane bullshit that gets spouted by politicians and members of this forum on both sides of the fence. I respect McCain a lot, however I did hear him misrepresent the truth on an NPR interview back in 2003 regarding weapons inspectors being kicked out of Iraq - which the interviewer pushed the point on and McCain claimed ignorance. So either he wasnt fully informed or like most people gets his information from the mainstream press. For some reason there's this entire concept on this forum that all politicians are demi-gods who are omniscient in all things rather than being as fallible and human as the rest of us. The fact remains that the WMD issue was known to be bullshit pre-war and the US Press, politicians and people got sucked into a dramatic story with little to no substance. How can I make such statements? because the worlds press tore apart every claim made by the US government, Chalabi (by way of Judith Miller) who was the prime source of all WMD rumors, and the UK government at the time. I realize that if it doesnt happen in the US it didnt exist in reality but there was a reason that politicians in europe were ranting, raving and resigning over the topic. I know that for msot americans its a sea of socialism out there, but those people did have some integrity. The WMD issue was bullshit, was known to be bullshit and has proved to be bullshit. Those still calling for patience are simply idiots who refuse to accept that its impossible to prove a negative, since those WMDs could still be hidden somewhere. Santa may also exist judging from the snippets of audio my kid managed to capture of my wife and I talking in hushed tones her present delivery this year.
