I'm with you. And yes it was a huge leap. I take them a lot, especially if the meds wear off. Loss of life is just a fraction of the psychological impact of the war. The difference between a war fought in foreign theatres and the luftwafe bombing the crap out of the cities. And I've never said 'you really didnt do much' in regards to this. I have, however, heard the 'we saved your asses' too many times to mention - usually from Americans who truly believe that the US won WW2 singlehandedly (perhaps with the British making a nice cup of tea in a supporting role) TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking.

Thank you for missing the point so superbly. "When 9/11 happened we got involved by sending girders and office chairs, so get off your damned high horse!" My point wasnt that sacrifices were not made by America, but that the impact in human life terms were on a scale that is unimaginable. Hell, I'm the first generation to NOT remember the war - 62,000,000 is unimaginable. But I grew up with stories of dead relatives, husbands, children, bombed out cities, rationing from people that didnt have to imagine it because it was part of who they became. I wasnt insulting anyone, just tossing out a thought that you took to be something more than intended. Hence my use of 9/11 as an example as far as the impact on a nations psyche and the long term cost. I should remember to always add "I FEEL ...." before any statement, obviously. And in all honesty, the US people were dragged into the conflict kicking and screaming by their president according to the history I've read (and I'm always open to conflicting information to follow up on). At which point the US did have a HUGE impact on the war, and helped the allies win. TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking.

Well, that and the passing of Conscription bill in 1940 which made it law for all men of military age to sign up for possible induction into the armed service. TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking.

Yeah, after 3 years of intense fighting, we'd lost quite a lot of ours. I realize you were joking, but the whole 'we saved your asses thing' from Americans has always shown a tremendous lack of awareness on the subject, or the impact it had on Europe as a whole in real terms. Hmmmm as an example I'd say - sort of like most Americans will feel about 9/11 in 50 years. edited: Except times it by 100 for deathtoll in the UK and then add the 61,900,000 others that died in total on all sides. not at all. I think it's just that some words pick up different meanings than their 'true' meaning - which tends to account for a lot of conflict on various forums - and life in general - except in person it's easier to correct fast enough that no one remembers. I see what you mean, I just didnt feel that Frenchy was talking about public proclamations of 'ooo look how awesome i am to not be racist'. I just thought that perhaps you had read more into the statement than I took away from his post. edited: of course you posted at the same time I did and made this post somewhat redundant. Personally I dont find any negative connotations with the word 'enlightened' unless its coming from a new-agey flake telling me that they are Enlightened. I think I read Frency's post differently. Seemed he was taking a global view that in nature humans are racist by virtue of fear of the unknown (think tribally). Of the "first" world nations that have the luxury of a middle class and time to think about things other than their next meal and basic survival there's the ability to consider mans commonalities and actively work against our programming and instead reprogram ourselves through sociological conditioning. Follow the civil rights history of the US for examples of that, 50 years is a relatively short space of time to become 'enlightened'. I dont think it was a crappy concept at all. unfortunately as Wendy said, and as is clearly evident within the 'proud christian' thread - facts and logic have no place. Like a mother who defends her child as a 'good boy' even though he murdered an entire family in cold blood, those who "BELIEVE" cannot be swayed by arguments that appeal to the intellect as belief is wired into the emotional centers - something far more primitive than logical thinking. Unfortunately I think it's going to end badly while the brother remains in this headspace, especially if he cannot accept a gentle rebuffing from his sister on the subject. Read any thread thats emotionally charged in SC and you'll see examples of emotional responses rather than reasoned replies. TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking.

So Bush Manipulated the Intell To Go to War
AlexCrowley replied to rushmc's topic in Speakers Corner
Rush, those with half a functioning brain never blamed Bush for manipulating anything. If this has been your basis for condemning "liberals" (by your definition) then you could do yourself a favor and actually start reading what those people believe is their justification rather than parroting some strawman argument which seems to have been pulled directly from some "right wingers" arse. Those who paid attention rolled their eyes and were pissed off by ALL politicians who contributed to the perpetuation of the inaccurate assessment of Iraqs military capabilities. As far as manipulation : I think those who have bought up the word have discussed it as the manipulation of public opinion or the manipulation of the media (especially Judith Miller via Chalabi). TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking.
