HP is a crutch Something I always do with newish riders is take them to a particular road in my normal riding area, which is downhill all the way. The entire group shuts off their engines, and we coast all the way to the bottom. Can't beat it for learning to conserve your brakes and how much a good line can change your turn exit speed. Lots of guys don't want to do this though, the lure of a 1000cc machine and flashy paint job is the reason they got a bike in the first place.

I told a cop to mind his own business. What happens next?
LongWayToFall replied to Airman1270's topic in The Bonfire
Cops have bad days too. If you had made a threat including the fact you know where he lives, I would have no respect for your argument. A funny story (not really): A friend of mine was driving while slightly intoxicated, in New Orleans a couple years back. Gets pulled over, cop mentions the smell of alcohol, yadda yadda. My buddy says "Don't you have anything better to do?" Cop just stares at him and then drives off. Somehow I don't think that would fly in most parts of the country hahaha -
Oh I agree. Come spring time I will be spending some time on the track, after selling my 1000cc Honda and buying a 650cc Suzuki. Less HP=learn faster, something that is hard to convince people of.

So, take a look at this video and let me know what you think. Fast forward to 4:00. Also note driving segment at 6:30. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDV9v_yMQA4 So, being legal, everyone is PERFECTLY fine with driving this speed, I am sure. Just because it is legal, doesn't make it safe, and just because it is illegal, doesn't make it unsafe.
-
Ugh, I give up trying to argue this any longer. For the record, I rarely speed, and don't advocate speeding to anyone, ever. I merely believe that it is possible to do so safely, in certain rare situations.
-
So the difference is pedestrians and road conditions? A person who knows a small strip of land well, can easily assure that both of those factors are eliminated. At that race, they have flag guys every 10 MILES! These guys are going flat out for a long ways, and if the road conditions suddenly change, it will take a little while to know about it. So, what is more dangerous, competing in that event or momentarily driving very fast on a similar stretch of road after riding up and down it several times, assuring to what is almost definitely a higher degree, that risks have been reduced to an acceptable level?

I love arguing with a police officer over the internet, about SPEEDING of all things. HA! You will argue all day about not speeding, but then you will go 145mph catching someone (who is only going 90) and justify it somehow. Again, there are roads out there that people know well, and can safely drive at very high speeds. You will never be able to completely eliminate all risk, but it is like that at a track too. I am not saying that some teenager should buy the next greatest supercar and see how fast they can go right off the lot. Check out this link: http://www.sscc.us/ So, what makes this safe? Because it is a racetrack? No. It is safer because of the sole fact that no other vehicles are on the road, but not anything else. I believe that it is possible to reduce the risks of driving on certain public roads to equal or lesser levels than that of the event in the above link. It is all about discretion, and becoming very very familiar with roads in far away places.

Again, advocating that someone who (possibly making a very educated choice, in an area where there was no risk to anybody else) decided to speed should be killed, is a fucking joke. Grow up man, and be sure to off yourself the next time you go over the speed limit.
-
Maybe you misread my post. I understand deadly accidents happen, I know people who ride who have been killed by vehicles while they were the one at fault. It is a tough situation, no doubt about it. But, there are roads out there, that have no side roads. No turn outs. No drive ways. A simple ride up and back assures that not a single person could possibly EVER be at risk of a collision, and this is a time where I think it is acceptable, although in conflict with the law, to speed. If you ride (drive) long enough, you discover these places, and the reason nobody ever hears of them is because the ones doing it have half a mind to keep it that way. 150mph+ is not a joke, and I am sorry you had to be exposed to the graphic irresponsibility of someone who made a poor choice. I digress, it seems that this was a foreigner speeding in another country, and if it was not a spot he knew well, then reckless easily describes his actions and he deserves the penalty. Advocating that the perpetrator have his car sold for charity is childish, however, and not a way to solve the problem.

Wings owners, lend me your ears and opinions.
LongWayToFall replied to npgraphicdesign's topic in Gear and Rigging
Man, mine was super long, i had to double it all the way across and then some, got it shortened by my rigger actually. Might be a body measurement discrepancy, but maybe call and ask them? -

Were they endangering other people with the speed? If so, I understand your thinking, but if it is just an open stretch of road with nothing and nobody around, then fuck it.

Funny skydiving video
LongWayToFall replied to JustinBenson's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Funny video! Is the student unhooked next to the open door at one point? Looks a little sketch in my mind haha -
No, definitely not fair to say everyone has chopped once. There is a good thread in general about cutaway stats, you should check it out.

Man those are some harsh words for a guy asking about options, with his mind already set on buying a wings. The pop top reserve is just an aesthetics issue, and considering the recent threads concerning reserve PCs being stuck, the pop top seems to be a better option. Riser protection on the wings are fine, I have never heard about problems with them. When you order a wings, you can specify wider leg straps (this is what did) and they are great. (free upgrade too btw). Customer service from Wings is excellent, no complaints, and as far as comfort goes, I am very happy with my rig. Not trying to knock infinity, but most of the things you stated are just personal opinions, not facts. -

Names of skydiving tricks?
LongWayToFall replied to FlyingFrank's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
That was pretty cool!! Fruit loops are a great way to end a jump hahaha. Sometimes the other person knows it is coming, so they try to go into a sit at the same time. Being a big fat dude comes in handy in this situation, because when you finally do get under them, they go flying twice as much! hahaha. Horny Gorillas are great fun, trying to make a 4 way or bigger gets interesting fast! -
As others have said, there are quite a few drop zones in the greater bay area. If you are looking for the best view, I would put Monterey on your list, the view of the Monterey bay is excellent. They also go to 15,000 and 18,000ft. Most DZs will charge you $180-200 for the jump, video and pictures are extra. If you would like to save some money, Lodi is only $100 for a tandem. I would not worry too much about safety, all the drop zones are safe and if one of them had a reputation for dangerous operations, the skydiving community would know about it. Have fun on your jump, you are going to have a great time! Don't forget to have a little food in your stomach, not eating anything actually makes you feel worse.

You will like the freefly pud on your PC. It feels very secure, and it is easy to grab as well. I don't know about the space foam, but I got the diamond patterned textured finish, and it feels good. Stainless seems like a waste, I got just the standard articulated harness and it is great. Something you should think about, is specifying extra wide leg straps. Someone told me to order them, and I am glad I did, they are quite comfortable. I would try on a rig with and without laterals, see how you like them. Also, the Vision container is suppose to be for big guys with small containers right? Or is it just the different colored one? I forget. Regardless, I am sure you will like your wings, they are great! -
I remember a poster, some time ago who was talking about a dropzone in Austria, which had mountains on both sides. During freefall, you were passing beside the mountains. This sounded so cool! Another DZ I like allot, is Skydive Monterey Bay, in California. 18,000ft, a very fast KA 200, and a great view. http://www.sky-chaser.com/drawing/caskypan.gif

Cannon fuse, aka visco fuse, is simply black powder wrapped in threads, with a coating applied to the outside of it. The diameter of the fuse and quality of the coating determine if it is water proof or not. If you wish to make visco fuse waterproof (you aren't sure if it is, and don't want to risk it) simply apply a few wraps of electrical tape. After the fuse is burning and the flame enters the tape, it won't go out. Here is a cool video of a large bottle rocket being lit in a hole in a frozen lake, you can see it zooming around under the ice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLlRaRRWJ_0&feature=related

I have a wings that is the same size as yours would be (same reserve, same main size just about) and it is very nice. I have hip rings, and like them allot, I also got the free fly pud (it has a tuck tab, which locates the handle well) . The rig is very comfortable, so just because they are a few bucks less don't count them out, they are very capable. I jumped a mirage G3 awhile back that I liked allot too. Anyways, good luck checking out gear, be sure to ask around for used rigs and try some stuff on.
