i start my aff jumps tommorrow
chutem replied to agent_lead's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Tombuch, I think that is what he goes buy, has a good book for you at this stage. I think the title is Jump. He will probably chime in here after a while. If you search his posts he has some good beginner advise. As has been mentioned check with your instructor befor trusting anything you read here. especially if I posted it. James -
I have less jumps than you so what do I know. The larger the canopy the smaller the same sq. footage change should affect things because it is a smaller percentage change in canopy size. From what I have seen in larger canopy sizes usually the smallest change is 20 sq ft. (sabre170 sabre150 never heard of sabre160) This is based on logic rather than experience (% change thing) if I'm wrong someone please correct my thinking. James

I saw that diablopilot had checked fuel pressure, Hook were you able to check yours? Can you hear your fuel pump makeing a whiny noise from the tank? If so listen to a similar vehicle to see if sounds the same. When the whining gets louder it is getting ready to go and may not be makeing full pressure all the time. Sorry to keep harping on this one it has just bit me in the ass to many times. Diablopilot, intake air temp sensor or engine coolant temp sensor could be the problem. If the computer thinks either one is warmer than it really is it will cause your problems. James

Also could be air leak at base of throttle body or intake manifold. The USB cable for the laptop sounds like the plan. If you have an air leak it may not show up on the computer, the Manifold Absolute Press. Sensor might pick it uo though. The suggestion about spraying water/carb cleaner/starting fluid around and listening for changes is good. If you use carb cleaner/starting fluid be careful there is risk of fire if ignition spark is getting "out" somewhere. James

Throttle Position Sensor could also be the culprit, most can be checked with a volt/ohm meter. James

Many electric pumps get weak before dieing, also on my van the check engine light was not comeing on when the computer screwed me. It was just intermitant driveability problems. My computer was way over $140 also. James

If it is fuel injected it might also be a fuel pressure problem, the injectors stay open a certain amount of time and if the fuel pressure is not what it should be,enough fuel will not squirt out. A motor needs more fuel when it is cold thus no start or start and run poor till warmed up. On most all but very sophisticated auto fuel systems the computer does not have a sensor to tell it the fuel pressure, it assumes it is correct. Sometimes slightly low fuel pressure will only cause very slight driveability issues, unless you are hauling a heavy load you may not even notice. On most injected vehicles it is not to hard to check the fuel pressure, and as mentioned before filters are cheap. I'm not saying this is the problem for you or the other poster just don't ignore this important check or you could end up putting alot of time/money/frustration into replaceing other parts with "shotgun" troubleshooting. James

Electric fuel pumps going bad will be intermittant lots of times. I have replaced 3 in personal vehicles and many on boats. Ignition coils can also be intermittant. James

Check your fuel pressure. If low replace the filter and hope you get lucky. If your not lucky you'll be pulling the gas tank to change the fuel pump. Some trucks it's easier to pull the bed off than drop the tank. If your fuel pressure is ok it might be time to have a DEALER check your computer, they will be best equipped for that. Had to replace the computer on my 95 dodge van recently after spending major time checking/changeing most of the components you mentioned. Another cheap item to try would be the ignition coil. That is if this vehicle has only one coil, if it has one coil per cylinder that is most likely not it. Good Luck James

Off topic again, but, if you ever loose your ID card/drivers license be sure to notify the issueing authority. It may help when you are accused of writeing bad checks. Bad people got ahold of my wife's DL and took it to the bank. They opened a checking account with $5 and then went all over town writeing bad checks poseing as my wife. We got it straightened out when the police contacted us about all the bad checks "we" had written. Good thing incredible universe has video on the cash registers that showed it was someone else. James P.S. this is not directed at anyone in particular just a general warning.

Honor your commitments. Just because someone else tells you it's ok to do something you know you should not does not make it ok. James

Well put. James

Lawn darts, now there was some fun. Your takeing me way back now. James

Does anyone here besides rain man know rain man? If someone really is loading at 2.4 at 200 some odd jumps you would think many people in the area would know about it. Next week he'll probably be jumping a 39 all though that is still probably to much fabric for him. If this is a true story I'll keep my eye on the incidents forum for you. James

My right leg is way more coordinated than the left. I Waterski and used to skateboard with my left foot forward allowing most of the control with my right foot/leg. Your grandmother could probably ski or skate better than me if I have to put my right foot in front. So far this has had no noticeable effect on my skydiving. James

Long ago when I first moved to AZ (mid summer) we took our 3yr old sun to the playground. He went over to the small kids slide and touched the "sliding surface" with the palm of his hand and left a layer of skin onthe hot as shit thing. I had no idea this would happen. (115 deg out, blareing sun, yes it was stupid on our part) I still feel guilty to this day for that one, 17 yrs later. I guess I should have sued the city and tried to make them get rid of all those dangerous 4' tall slides. James

Send me a dollar and I'll tell you how it works out. James

On a serious note, don't burn your bridges, one of these companys may have a job open that you want either now or in the future. On the other hand damn that sounds like fun. It almost makes me want to go apply for some job I don't want just to see the look on their face. James

I think I understand, slowed enough from res. opening that main pilot chute did not open main container? James
-
I don't understand how he could slow down enough so it didn't open if he had an aad fire. Are you saying that the cutter failed to cut the reserve closeing loop? James
-
Holy wow. I really, really like my new canopy.

New gear, cool, nice to hear your happy with what you got. Now jump, jump, jump. See you at the holiday boogie. -
Come to Eloy for some coached tunnel time, you will not be sorry.
-
How selfish of me, I never even thought of trying to shake it off to "save" the plane. Realizing it is your reserve before you attempt to cut away would be very important at this point. I guess the blob of different color fabric should give this away pretty quick. James
-
Say your on the camera step of an otter and have a premature reserve opening resulting in you hanging from your reserve off the "tail section". Is the best plan of action to cut the lines/risers off with your hook knife and deploy the main once you are clear? What if you drop your hook knife, chew threw them? Of course preventing this situation with gear checks/maint and a pin check prior to exit would be preferrable, but what would "you" do? James

Schwinn (spelling) makes some nice ones. I used to have one of their 20" tire units, very solid. I got to try a 24" wheel for a while and it seemed much better to me. Gets a little more travel for each peddle stroke. I currently have a 20" that I got from a pawn shop for $20, can't remember what brand but is well built. I tried a 6' tall chain driven one a long time ago without much luck, was a lot of fun though. I brought the $20 one to the dropzone while on student status and had quite the laugh watching the instructors and camera guys falling left and right. If you don't already ride a good way to start is with the wheel against a curb and a peddle just below horizontal to the rear, step back on that peddle to bring yourself up over the wheel then go forward.
