You come accross as quite unbiassed yourself. I'm not saying there is a fire at ACORN, just some "questionable ethics" in advice supplied by their employee. You go ahead and act like you don't believe there was any wrongdoing done by ACORN employees since there was not a prosecutable crime. With any luck the un-edited tapes will be public and we can see how it played out. James

Many only use unemployment benns to get buy while looking for a job. My problem is the ones that limit their job search to only the jobs they want while on unemployment. Why should I work full time for only a little more than my unemployment check seems to be a common sentiment these days. I'm sure many are not like this, but I know unemployed people with this attitude and I'm sure they are not alone. I wonder how many people started applying at fast food places a few weeks ago when they knew they only had a few weeks left of unemployment checks unless the gov extended? How many said "those jobs are beneath me" and waited for the gov to extend? "No use applying for a job that won't pay my bills" they say. Unless things turn around you may have to reduce your bills. Maybe the jobs that were not good enough will look better with no other check coming in. It's a sticky situation and I don't have an answer. I do know that unemployment benns can not be extended for ever, there has to be a deadline somewhere. At what point does it simply become welfare? James

How much of the problem do you think is related to out of control personal spending payed for with credit? The economy looks good when when people are spending alot of money, but if the people don't pay it back how good was it really? Now that people can't pull a bunch of money out of the home equity they have due to inflated home values how will they keep spending more than they make so we can have a good economy? I bought my first home in November of last year.(I'm 44 so I've rented alot) It was built in 2004 and the people who bought it refinanced it 3-4 times up to a final debt of $288,000. I bought it in very good condition for $132,000. They did not put the money back into the home so I must assume they spent it on other things. Obviously they spent it because they lost the house to the bank. Defaulting/negotiating down credit card debt is a big thing these days. I'm guessing the days of running up tens of thousands of dollars in credit card debt people can't pay back are a thing of the past. Gotta love the commercials though-- Did those evil credit card companies loan you more than you can afford? It's not your fault and we can help you-- Is the only way this country can avoid depression to spend money we don't have and may not be able to pay back? (both gov and individuals) I know I'm way oversimplifying the situation and remember I'm just a small business owner who's not as sharp on world finances as many here. That's not what the article you quote seems to say. Also could someone explain to me how not having health insurance increases your chance to die by 40% as the quoted article mentions? James
