  1. There are 3rd-party tools out there to specify different refresh-rates for games that are not using the DirectX APIs... I can't remember what they are called but I have used them successfully before. Basically they consisit of a fancy front-end for making registry changes. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
  2. He is VERY melodramatic though and was freaking out before and after the procedure... I don't even know why he did it since he is so mental about anything medical. He kept saying that he was going blind afterwards and when I talked to his wife she said he was being a huge baby about it... so in this case, esp w/a DOZEN follow-ups because he is still convinced he is going blind ... it is psychosomatic. BTW, he goes through the disposable blister-packs of eye-drops like M&Ms. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
  3. I have had numerous coworkers and friends get their eyes "lasered". Everyone is really happy about the results (except for my one crybaby/whiner friend who is now "addicted" to eye-drops). NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
  4. Some people play it safe and hold up a 2-iron during the thunderstorms. Even God can't hit a 2-iron. I am going to shamelessly steal this joke for use at the golf course... NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
  5. Personally, I never concentrate at work... I may not be going to Rantoul, but after work I have a 5 hour drive to Eloy so I can jump in the morning. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
  6. I have had 1 late flare to-date... I have to agree that marginally too high is better than too low/not at all. I was uninjured in my "thud" landing as I sort of slid it in and landed on my butt in the middle of the grass. (at least I was on target ) NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
  7. Well, the remark "is" out of context technically. In the context of the discussion with the AS&T it was implied that yes, we were talking about throw-out/red/silver being the order. I imagine doing it in reverse would possibly lead to a nice crater adjacent to the DZ. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
  8. Our student rigs are equipped with RSLs as well but when I posed the question regarding the "need" to pull silver after red the answer was also to simply "pull everything until your goggles fill with blood". (old Special Forces guys are cool ) I would not bet my life on having it (the RSL) function perfectly in the event of a highly unstable or spinning cutaway. What type of failure is a "total mal"... a failure to get your PC out of the BOC pouch for instance? What else is considered a "total mal" I figured a PC in tow would have been included in that group but I guess it is still a "partial mal" NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
  9. Personally, I still think there is a greater chance I will be killed riding my motorcycle the 5 hours it takes to get to Eloy from southern New Mexico, where I live, than during one of my skydives (even as a student soloing). On a bike, the only thing you get to "chop" is the throttle and the "reserve-ride" usually entails an ambulance. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
  10. Yes, while we were not specifically referring to a "total mal" in the conversation I believe that is what he intended to convey, i.e. red then silver on any unrecoverable mal. I re-read the section in the SIM regarding total mal vs. partial mal procedures and it actually has a note in there that states: "Note: Some schools teach partial malfunction procedures as an alternative to the following procedures for when the parachute has been activated but has failed to deploy." I guess there are arguments both ways on this one. Personally, I would love to hear any situations in which you shouldn't cutaway a total mal'd main before going to the reserve, e.g. PC-in-tow, baglocked main, ???, etc. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
  11. havent seen that one yet... but the stupid deoderant one where the guy craters into the football field seems to be getting a lot of airplay NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
  12. I felt just about like I was going to pass out on my level 6 jump for some reason. I just felt uneasy. It took several seconds standing at the door to convince myself to dive out, but as soon as I did I felt much better. Sometimes when I sit and replay jumps in my head, it makes me nervous, while other times I am just dying to drive to the dropzone and jump! I think it is all part of learning to be a skydiver. An old Special Forces friend of mine that jumped many times into combat said that, "...the minute you aren't scared anymore, you shouldn't be jumping." Practice and repetition builds confidence. Good luck in AFF.
  13. For one year of my adult life I rode motorcycles w/out insurance as I trasitioned from military to civilian life... I think I am REALLY lucky that nothing happened to me or I would be one broke-azz mo-fo right now. Taking risks is okay in my opinion, but you always gotta have "an out" in case of an unforseen problem, especially if others are relying on you for their livelihood. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
  14. My DZ's S&TA, who instructed me for ground school, said, "If you have a mal, and land without ALL of your handles pulled, you are wrong..." Sounds like pretty good advice to me for a n00b... thinking about whether to do a transfer or not is probably not going be a good idea for less experienced jumpers. While I can totally see the reason for it, I don't know if "in the heat of battle" I would want to second-guess chopping my main first. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
  15. I also grab my rears after the canopy is inflated/inflating since it does save you a couple extra seconds if you had to react to something heading at you vs. fumbling with the toggles. If my logic is wrong here, hopefully someone will let me know... NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
  16. I only think personalized tags that are soooo obscure NO ONE understands them are lame...
  17. pepsi.... ack! NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
  18. I would take my REALLY uptight female coworker that just thinks I am INSANE for doing such dangerous things as racing motorcycles, skydiving, etc... If I could just open one person's eyes to the experience, I would be happy. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
  19. In a split-second choice between flames or freefall, I'll take my chances in the wind (with an appropriate rig of course). Maybe some innocent bystanders or a nice big SUV will break your fall. ...I am kidding of course. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
  20. lol, I saw that ad and said to myself, "hey I had a couple of beers with her and others at the Bent Prop!"
  21. congrats... give me a couple of months to catch up... NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
  22. lol, thanks... I just found the pic today when I was bored at work. I was looking for the one of the cow falling off the cliff, but had no luck. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
  23. something tells me this is not the best idea... NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
  24. DITTO!!! ...if I ever get bored of that I will just take up BASE. And if that's STILL not enough adrenaline, I will self-refer myself into a psycho-ward. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
  25. When we did "drownproofing" every year in the Army, I had no problem stripping off my equipment, BDU top, and then pants while treading/floating/sinking in the water... The canister just seems to me to be: a. another thing that can malfunction b. another thing that can snag a line and cause a malfunction c. more dead weight If you are worried about water landings, why not work on your swimming skills or canopy skills to help mitigate risk. After all, that is all anyone can ever really do... just REDUCE risk, not eliminate it. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
