Not TOO uncommon, really. Electricity just conducts through the skin (usually). I just read an article in FLYING about a small 4 place single that got hit in a test flight. It had a composite skin, i.e. doesn't conduct electricity, but it survived practicaly unscathed, except for some small burn marks. Pretty cool pics though!
