Do you think Obama will go golfing this weekend?
freethefly replied to jgoose71's topic in Speakers Corner
It is insane. Elvin would lose everything, if he did not plant. He's the same age as I am, 51. He's been farming since he was old enough to drive a tractor. It's all he knows how to do. Most of what he plants is field corn. Part of his crop feeds their hogs, while the rest goes to market for livestock fodder. They're not growing for human food, but for feed for livestock, which is equally important. Farm subsidies inflates food price, land value and encourages over-farming. Much of what is farmed goes to waste. Subsidies are great for the corporate farms, but does nothing for the man who works his fields from the early morning hour into the night. Subsidies are equally great for the land owner who never plants one single seed. Again, they do nothing for the farmer who is looking at the sky hoping for rain. No rain, no crop, no pay day. The millionaire who collects subsidies, yet never plants a seed, does not have that kind of worry. Slashing subsidies would save billions for the taxpayer. The money saved should then be directed to those small farms that keep a farm community viable. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." I don't want to sound like a dick, but suggest to him about spending $20.00 on some tire spoons and change it himself. I can do it faster than the machine. Been changing them by hand since I was a kid swapping knobbies on my dirtbike. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young

The 404 has a lower load capacity, also. H-D does not recommend using the 404, although, a lot of guys do. I'll never use one ever again. The D401 is the only tire that H-D recommends. I think they need to start recommending a few others. The D402 is a Harley tire also. Another option is going to the dark side, running car tires. I haven't done it yet but I know a few guys that swear by it. I think I may try one this winter when I'm not riding in the mountains all the time. http://darkside.nwff.info/ Yup, you're correct about the 402. There are a few more, depending on bike model. The car tire isn't anything new. It was common back in the 80's and way earlier to use tires such as the Volkswagen beetle tire. An old retired El Forastero had us put one on his Pan last summer. I would think that Gypsy has used them on his Knuck, a time or two. As with Old Jake (the El Forastero. And yup, he is old. He's in his 70's), he putts his ride. I think the car tire is fine for the old Pans and Knucks as those bikes weren't built to handle like today's bike. I think that I may even be fine with a car tire on an Ultra Classic, but not on a Softail, Dyna, or Sportster, not at all. You can check the Harley forums and read what others think. It's been talked to death. Some swear by them, while others call them organ donors. If you want to get an idea of how one may handle, ride behind someone on a Big Dog chopper with a massive pro-street tire. They need every bit of the outside of a curve to get around it. It may look cool (at least to a ten year old kid), but ride-ability goes to hell. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young

Do you think Obama will go golfing this weekend?

Maybe they can do away with a all of the farm subsidies for the rich land owners who don't own tractor number one. http://www.nypress.com/article-21342-the-making-of-manhattans-elite-welfare-farmers.html http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/06/15/republicans-food-aid-women-farm-subsidies_n_877265.html My cousin, Elvin, inherited his fathers farm, near 500 acres in Northwest Missouri. My dad's side of the family has been in this area since the early 1800's. Along with the farm, he got the equipment. There is still a big bill on the combine ($300,000.00 piece of machinery) as well as other high-dollar machinery that is needed to raise corn. He does not get one dollar in subsidies. A good year pays the bills. In a good year he can keep the combine rolling on other farms. This year is looking poorly for them. It's appalling that the richest of the rich are lining their pockets while the real farmers are struggling to make the ends come together. I just don't see how someone who couldn't pick out a combine if it were sitting in a field by itself can call them self a farmer and qualify for subsidies. The richest of the rich are stealing from the taxpayer and have the support of the Teaparty, all the while, those who work their land to support their families are drowning in debt. A breakdown of subsidies in Missouri. http://farm.ewg.org/region.php?fips=29000 58 percent of farmers in Missouri did not collect subsidy payments - according to USDA. Ten percent collected 72 percent of all subsidies. Amounting to $5.59 billion over 16 years. Top 10%: $21,942 average per year between 1995 and 2010. Bottom 80%: $528 average per year between 1995 and 2010 "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young -

I ran the 391s on my last Fatboy since the bike was new. I swapped the stock tires as soon as they were worn out. Always got 10-15000 out of a back tire. I put over 250,000 miles on that bike. Back tire got changed once a year. The front, about every three years, maybe. Now, I am averaging 2 to 3 back tires per year and not doing no where near what I use to ride. Last summer, rode down to Corsicana, Texas with a brand new tire. By the time I got back up here to Mount Vernon, MO the tire was showing thread. The tire was on her for no more than 3 weeks. Mind you, I took the long route by way of Little Rock down to Texas and then came back up by way of the Pig Trail, so the tire did get a work out, but that is still no reason to have worn so fast. Really wish Dunlop still offered the 391. My opinion is it was the best they ever made. For what it's worth, I am a PHD Certified Harley Technician. I do know a little something about tires. I realize that the trade off with the softer compound is durability and longevity as opposed to the harder compound that was used in the 391. The 401 and the 402 sticks to the road better than the 391, but not by much. I road my 91 much harder than I do my 05. Besides, it's not like I'm racing it in the Isle of Man at flat out balls to the wall speeds. Yeah, I know some say to change every 5 years regardless as the compound tends to harden. Tire industry says 6 years for unmounted tires. That said, a buddy of mine put a set of Avons on the 73 Sporty we built 2 years ago. He had those tires in his garage for more than 5 years. He's still running them with no issues. He did use a rejuvenator on them as they weren't cracked or dry rotted. Might try that on the Norton tires when I get her back on the road. If they feel good, I'll run them for awhile, if not, I'll swap them. What I am seeing on the Kenda tires, I think they'll do for the little time I have left to ride before getting back on the rails. I've used the old "Can I clear a seat for you?" Then wiped my hand across my mouth. Oddly, it never worked. Probably had something to do with me being drunk at the time. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young

@ Warpedskydiver. What kind of mileage are you getting on the rear? Type of bike? Weight on the rear? Riding style? Do you do a lot of engine braking? Highways or back roads? Type of road; asphalt, cement, chat...? I live on the back roads and they are all chat. Mostly straight or curvy? Roads around here are very curvy. Hills or flat? Mostly hills around here. I live in the Ozarks. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young

I wanted the Metzler, but J&P has them on back order for a month. Like I said in my last post, I have maybe a month of riding time before I'm back on the rails. At this point, I'm leaning towards getting Metzlers next time around. I'm done Dunlop's insta-slicks "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." http://www.unc.edu/depts/jomc/academics/dri/idog.jpg I know what you mean. I also checked all of the Harley forums and found near everyone running Kenda are 100% satisfied with them. Like I said, the real test will be how I feel about them. The reason, besides the reviews, that I got them is money and time. I should be back on the rails sometime next month and won't be home until December. I can't wait a month for the tires I want. I could go elsewhere for them, but J&P has the best price, and that is a deciding factor over the other guys. I hear what you're saying and I had my reservations in getting them, at first. I did check a fair number of forums and websites for reviews. As far as I could tell, everyone who has bought them are extremely happy with them. I posted here to see if anyone here has had any experience with them. I've been riding on the street since 76 and have always used Dunlop. However, the last 4 back tires were bald by 3000 miles. Those were 401s and one 404 (the 404 got less than 3000.) The Dunlop K 391 S Sport Elite on the Norton has over 10,000 miles on it and still has plenty of tread. The front is a K 391 FS Sport Elite and still looks new. They were put on in the 90's (I can take pics and post them, if anyone want to see them.) I trust them to not come apart even though they have some years and miles on them. From what I see at Dunlop's website, the 391 is no longer in production. What a shame. The link below is one of the reviews that I read last night, while deciding on these tires. One guy claims to get 10,000 miles from them. These are the tires I bought. The real review will be once I have them on and some mileage on them. http://www.pureoffroad.com/kenda_k673_kruz_motorcycle_tires.htm#Reviews "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." I never tried using them myself to pick a lady up. Pretty sure that I would had got slapped 20 different ways if I had. Besides, I didn't want to risk losing them. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young

I mount them myself. I can do the job with spoons faster than I can with a machine. As for balancing, I've never worried about it and have never noticed any wobble or erratic wear. Having worked in a few bike shops over the years, I've noticed that as long as the paint dot is lined up with the valve stem, the tire tends to be on the money. I'm hoping that the cost savings and time savings will pan out with the Kenda tires. I really wanted the Metzler tires, but it seems that J&P is always sold out and on back order. Local shops want near $200.00 for the same Metzler tire. J&P wants $136.00. The Kenda tires are $98.00. Hell, the 4 Firestone Firehawks on my truck were less than $300.00. Long gone are the days when riding was cheap "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young

Back in the summer of 1987 after testing rail all day on Conrail, we rolled into Bellefontaine, OH and tied up the rail test car for the weekend. I grabbed a shower and told the guy I was working with that I was heading over to the tavern. He said he'll be over in about an hour. I went into the tavern, sort of a hot rod bar with a lot of NASCAR stuff on the walls. There wasn't many people in the place at the time, as it was around 4pm. There was, however, three very nice looking ladies sitting at a table drinking. I claimed a stool at the bar and ordered a beer and a shot of bourbon. While sitting there, thinking up a good pick up line to use, one of them got up and walked my way. As she walked past me, heading for the restroom, she tossed a book of matches towards me. It landed next to my beer. She continued on her way to the restroom. See attachments. Needless to say, I had a very nice weekend. Kept those matches all of these years. Just ordered front and rear tires for my FLSTF from J&P (tires, locally cost an arm and a leg.) The tires that I wanted, Metzler, are out of stock and would be more than a month to arrive. I've used Dunlop for the last thirty years, religiously. As of the last 4 rear tires, I've averaged 3000 miles before needing a new rear tire. At more than $135.00 per tire, it's getting a little more than annoying and expensive. I'm not at all happy with the D401s. The last back tire was a D404. That tire got under 3000 when it started to show thread. Not at all happy with the D404. I swapped the 401 back on her, for the time being, as it did have some tread left. In the far past, I was very happy with Dunlop. The rear tire on the Norton is a K391 S and has near 10,000 on her and plenty of tread left. It was put on in the late 90's. Now, mind you, it is a hard compound, unlike the 401 and the 404, which is a very soft compound. Some of my bro's say they are just as disappointed with Dunlop and switched to the Metzler or Avon. Wanting to get back on the road and not willing to wait for the Metzler or Avon, I went ahead and ordered the Kenda tires. From reviews I have read, people seem to be happy with them. I'm not so happy to put a China tire on my bike, but I'm not willing to wait for the other, or pay more for the alternative to the Metzler. My question is, has anyone here ever used Kenda? If so, where/are you happy with them? The two I ordered are under $200.00 for the pair. I, also, ordered a new battery. Orders above $200.00 is free shipping. Nope. After Molly Ringwald was cast as Frannie, I gave up hope that Hollywood had a clue. Christine was the best screen adaptation by far. Don I have to agree that of all of the adaptions, Christine was the best. My opinion of The Stand is that the mini series was awful. The book was great and introduced Randall Flagg for the first time. Flagg makes his way through a number of King novels using a number of aliases. In the Dark Tower, Flagg takes on a number of identities (Walter, Marten, Broadcloak, Fannin, Farson, the Man in Black.) Somehow I think that The Stand will play a greater part in a later book of the Dark Tower series. Much in the way that Salem's Lot played into Wolves of the Calla. We haven't seen the end of Flagg, I hope. No other villain embodies evil in the way that King portrays the many faces of Flagg. You got to love Flagg. I really hope that King keeps the story alive for as long as possible. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young

I don't feel that it really is the end of the series as book eight is due for release next year. It is somewhat odd that it fills in the time lost between Wizard and Glass and Wolves of the Calla, but it will answer a lot of questions. At the end of book seven Roland finds himself back in the Mohaine desert, only now he has the Horn of Eld, there is more to the story as Roland does not realize that he has reached the top room of the tower many times before. What occurred in those past life's? How will this be different now that he is back on the trail of the Man in Black? Roland's true quest is his own humanity and he has yet to conquer that. Now that he has the Horn of Eld, he is closer than before. He has yet to come to grips with the deaths of Susan Delgado, Cuthbert, and Alain. How will he resolve his past? I think more is to come in the series that will eventually tie the whole thing together to answer every question. I certainly hope so! Was that a stock rebuild on the engine or did you go for the performance upgrades? I know that they are quick as they are, but hey, you can always go faster! "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young

I have to agree. There are a few novels that seem to be re-hash or over-done. I can't say the same for the Dark Tower. I like how he brought characters from other stories, such as Father Callahan from Salem's Lot or Randall Flagg form The Stand into the fold. Even more, the connection to a large body of his work is intertwined in the Dark Tower series. One would have had read every King novel to make the connections, such as Lisey's (Lisey's Story) license plate being 5761RD (adds up to 19 and RD being Roland's initials). The Dark Tower is, without question, masterpiece storytelling. Being a series that is now going on 30 years with The Wind Through the Keyhole to be released next year, it seems to be the never ending story. I, for one, hope that the story continues for years to come. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young

Big fan of Stephen King. Major fan of his epic Dark Tower series based on the Robert Browning poem "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came." Searched the forums, and indeed, I am not alone here. In a way I was hoping that the movie would be made, as well as the mini-series. The "constant reader" in me hoped for the opposite. As it stands, the latter wins out, for now. http://www.stephenking.com/promo/dark_tower_film_and_tv/news_tracker/ In hoping that the movie would be made, I had hope, slim I know, that Clint Eastwood would play the part of Roland Deschain. King once commented that Eastwood was part of the inspiration in developing the Gunslinger. Clint instantly came to mind when I read the first book back in 1982. I am looking forward to reading "The Wind Through the Keyhole", to be released next year. It fills in the time between "Wizard and Glass" and "Wolves of the Calla." Is anyone else disappointed that the movie and the mini-series is a no go at this time? Myself, I am on the fence as movies and/or mini-series tend to not give justice to a book. Nothing is wadded up here. Christianity should not be taught in public schools under the guise of science. Ron and others have said that the bible is not a science book. I merely pointed out that a vocal majority of Christians do, in fact, see it as such and wish to teach it alongside legitimate science. Keep it in the church. That was my point. Now, go straighten out your panties, ma'am. Oh, in case you have failed to notice, this is a discussion/debate board. There is a discussion/debate going on. If a person post a view/belief on such a board, they should be prepared to be called out on their view/belief. I and everyone else is free to inject/interject their view/belief.
