I spoke to Bill about the same thing. But he also said he can not risk law suits due to USPA not sticking with the "Age Of Majority" rule and not enforcing the rules they currently have. I agree that the Manufacturers should not have to deal with Instructor Ratings and eventually Examiners as well, it should fall to USPA, or an association like it. But obviously with this letter they do not feel USPA is ready to take it all over yet. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

He would need to buy a standard SIGMA that can hold the 395/425. But that canopy has been out of use for a reason. It is not worth the money for a work rig. If one is going to start doing Tandems on their own with their own rig, make the big initial investment and go all SIGMA. With the new line set on the SIGMA II mains, he can look at a solid return on the investment if he is wiling to work, or lease the rig out. Of course he will need a few more jumps and a course too, but that is another thread. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

Well in reading the letter from the Manufacturers and watching the BOD meeting video (where the BOD and Manufacturers agreed to each retain the right to revoke ratings), if the BOD does not agree, the Manufacturers will take the Tandem Program back or just get out of the civilian tandem business. All this because a handful of folks are putting dollar before liability and others are doing things (CRW, VRW etc) against the Manufacturers rules. 60 Minutes - How Staff Sgt. Giunta Earned The Medal of Honor
matthewcline replied to quade's topic in Speakers Corner
I saw the irony, I also saw his point. I recently got to sit down and interview Col. Jack Jacobs, MOH in Viet Nam. He has a humble attitude as well and he stated he got his medal for taking lives as he saved others. I have had the distinct Honor to talk to several MOH recipients, too a man they all say the award is for those who could not stand up there and receive it. Just like SSG Giunta. I think balance would have been good for California, just like it should be good for the Country. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

para-flite 375 canopy as a tandem main ?
matthewcline replied to mrbiceps's topic in Gear and Rigging
It was not designed for that type of load and would be a bad idea to try and jump it for that. If it is the Mil version it is probably all F-111 type material and as old as you posted probably pretty well used up. It could make a good decoration or boat cover. But to jump it or even suggest it be jumped would be negligent. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!! -
I am on your side that Kids should be able to participate, but this is not knee jerk. These rules have been in place but not enforced for years. The Manufacturers, the ones defending them selves in court, are asking USPA to honor its original agreement. If not, Tandem will go away and the growth the sport has seen may very well go with it. To All: This isn't really "New". UPT has had this stance from the beginning and the two other Manufacturers fell the same way. USPA decided to say 16 and did not separate Tandems from AFF/SL/IAD. This put the Manufacturers, the ones who have to defend themselves in a law suit, in a tough spot; Sue the DZ's? Sue and or Revoke ALL the Ratings of Holders who jump at those DZ's? OR Ask USPA to honor the original letter of agreement and honor the Manufacturers Rules. This is not a fight at our level. It is a fight at State and National Levels to make one age the Age Of Legal Majority and to allow minors to be involved in high risk sports and the waivers to be honored.

I disagree. This position will blow the steering lines around the pack job. Take care, space This is 'cause folks don't like the canopy inflating on them during packing. With the smaller parachutes these days you can pack in darn near any direction. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

I too got a copy of the letter from my RD and brought it up for discussion in an old thread in the Instructor Forum. Seems to me it is a done deal. Weather USPA adopts the BSR or not, the Manufacturers will enforce their age rules. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

SAVE SKYDIVE THE POINT!!!!
matthewcline replied to blacklabjumper's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I think that is a good sign. Maybe they thought they could lease out the hanger to another entity and Jim would stay, two sources of income so to speak. But by Jim saying I gotta go if there is no hanger, they may have to re-think the plan. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!! -
As of 11/17/10 all THREE Tandem Rig Manufacturers have asked the USPA to change the BSR BACK to the Age Of Majority or 18, which ever is higher. This letter they wrote went to ALL members of the BOD and the FAA. Plus it means that all Three Rig Manufacturers are of the same mind and all Tandem Rig jumps are to be conducted with 18 year olds or age of majority or higher. So the Rigs are to be jumped in accordance with the Manufacturers Rules (UPT has ALWAYS been this way) and in Jan the BSR will more than likely change to support that for all. Well in reading the fb page info and here, it is not an access issue. They are still going to be allowed access to load and jump. They are not going to be allowed the use of the hanger though. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!! -
But you don't offer sound advice. What you offer is uninformed snide comments that are going to lead to some one getting hurt if they follow any of it. If you can't refrain or listen to Andy then I hope the Mod's will give you a chance to cool your heals. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!
