Why would you not just turn away from the other canopy after quickly looking to clear airspace? Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

It is an option, not mandatory. The Option came out about the same time Strong came out with their mandatory "Y" strap. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

Should the AAD activation altitude be raised to 1250 feet?
matthewcline replied to JohnSherman's topic in Gear and Rigging
It's $125, IIRC. $100 for the patent royalty and $25 for the hook and misc. parts, as I remember. Even if it were free, you wouldn't find it on an Infinity since it can complicate things (relative to the majority of rigs that are currently in the field) should you scare your AAD during main deployment. This creates different EP's for different brands of rigs, which I think is a step backward for the sport. To get completely back on topic, I could see raising the AAD firing altitude to 1000', but I think 1250' is a bit excessive. Still not a bad price as it comes as a kit. The Skyhook doesn't effect the Industry Standards for EP's they are the same, packing is a tad bit more complicated though. I think the Rigs and Reserves need top meet the 300' opening standard. ADD's need not be raised as an across the board rule though. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!! -
Should the AAD activation altitude be raised to 1250 feet?
matthewcline replied to JohnSherman's topic in Gear and Rigging
If the prevention of fatalities is the case, he should allow any/all manufacturers use the Skyhook free of charge. It sure seems to be marketed as a safety device that could prevent fatalities. I am not saying that he is not trying to prevent fatalities but it is hard to play that card when you are trying to turn a profit with this safety device. What Bill has asked for is near free. $5 a Rig is what I was told. Since he would now be added to another companies lawsuit (if some thing happened) he would put this in the legal defense fund at UPT. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. Universal Signals between TIs & Camera Flyers
matthewcline replied to jumprun1's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
YES, Each and every group should confirm their spot. Yes it may mean a long spot for the last Tandem, they can either go around or pull a tad higher if comfortable in their skills. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!! -

You should know if the spot is long prior to climbing out, look down, then if it is good, climb out. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!! -

Then that means the Prof. Card is full of "forged" signatures. The steps to prevent that are there Pops. WE I's have the ability to fix it with out USPA needing to do more, WE I's just mentor the Candidate, a little "Pay It Forward". I harp on this all the time at the two DZ's I jump at, and it seems to be the norm at those two DZ's, to do that. WE I's can change the Instructor Culture through EXAMPLES. Injured on a night jump...Why?
matthewcline replied to blue24's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I think she means both limbs at the same time. He went feet knees face, straight in, so had matching bruises. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!! -
Oh, hell. Now you got me started on that whole rating requirement thing. It severely grinds my shorts that you can get get a Coach rating one day and an AFF or TI rating the next. Stupid USPA. It's unbelievable how often that happens. They listened, that can only happen if the Candidate has 500 jumps or more now. The rest have to wait 12 months after the Coach Course for an I Course. Yes. A lot of times.

Not at the two DZ's I jump at, but you may have a point if your made up statistic was more like 50%. Billvon has a good point, but I think being proficient may be a minor point to "Knowledge through experience" of what is happening in the subject one is filming. It would be good for a Camera Flier to know the little things that can be presented to them when and AFF goes bad out the door, or a tandem's trap door, side spin etc. Same foe RW/VRW filming. License to be a Tandem videographer
matthewcline replied to Booger_Boogie's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Now we get to modify that (a little) with the 19 Commandments of Tandem Skydiving, in the US. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!! -
According to an email I just got from the USPA - "The FAA has responded, stating its intent to correct the errors expeditiously." Thanks to everyone who's on-top of things like this. It's nice to know someone is paying attention... _Am And what are being called errors? Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

Skyride Taking Advantage of Google Places
matthewcline replied to gweeks's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Nothing changes. Even the ones who "claim" to not work with them are working with them. Leasing planes, taking all certificates. Sad. At least Larry and Betsy stood the test and stayed true to their morals. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!! -
Who was the "lucky" person who took Paris Hilton on a tandem?

Looking at the video it appears Marie (sp) is helping to flair and she locked up at 90 degrees. If that is the case, it is not all on the T-I. He can spend more time teaching the flairing tech or not let the 1st time jumper land, but fly the pattern sure. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

I concur with your assesment of the jumpers affiliation (or lack of) with the GKs. Edit to add - According to this article, this was indeed the GKs http://www.dailymail.com/ap/ApTopStories/201106150381 I tend to doubt the accuracy of the media, so I'm still open to the idea it wasn't them. I read the article too. But do not think they faces are current Team Members of the USAPT. The media could have gotten it wrong ,the article is a school (Student) journalist? and if one of the old suits still had the GK patch, well assumptions happen. The gear does not look GK spec, but that would be the easist thing on the team to replace. The jumpers, their jumpsuits, and the media presence certainly lead one to believe it's an 'official' GK jump. In my opinion, that would be reason enough to conduct yourself like a GK. That aside, it was a bad move on the part of the TI. I don't buy into the idea that it was a tight approach, and a toggle swoop over the pond was the only way in. Only one of the Jumps suits look like an OLD GK suit. All the rest of the colors are another team. I concur with the rest of your assessment. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

Maybe I jumped to that conclusion because the thread was entitled 'Golden Knight tandem swoop', and then I recognized some of the Knights in the video, and a bunch of guys wearing the Knights black jumpsuits with the two gold stripes. I also noticed another video in that set where the local Fox affiliate interviewed the coach before the jump. Like I said, high profile. I will just say that is not a US Army Parachute Team conducted Jump. Former Members sure. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!
