What is it like to do a stadium jump?
matthewcline replied to cocheese's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I have over 700 Demo's, 200+ into Stadiums, in my experience: Demo Jumps require the right "Tool" for the job. There are maybe 10 people in the world who could safely swoop a stadium, most wear "factory colors" in the Pro ranks. A stadium is a monster compared top any other Demo. Not only the QB Cam as previously mentioned, but the bands, players, grounds crew, film crews, cables for the nets, goal posts, dramatic wind changes and then of course the HOPE that the TV or Stadium folks don't change the time line and you have to abort while on final. I have seen Swooper's do stadium demo's, but they use a more traditional type canopy because they used the right tool for the job. When you do jump a stadium, leave the super swoop canopy at the DZ and use a more traditional canopy (that you practiced with a lot, and then some more!) you will be much happier that you did. Is this part of the whole Skyride ring?
matthewcline replied to xtheowl's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I do not know the "legalities" but the liability has got to be high! That is not too smart IMHO, they appear to be playing around, but that could turn tragic real fucking fast! I would think Chuck knows better, his skills are better than what that pic suggests at least. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!! -
Preventing kill-line burns on top of a canopy

Cock it before you bag it and put a micro band on the rapid link, then slow the excess tape in the band, it will help to keep fabric out of danger. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!! -
I may make it to the boogie next year. If I return it will be as a "Free" Coach and fun jumper. You know, make three or so jumps then head out to do things with the Family and such! You know stay current enough to not be a danger, but not current enough to be an asset to the Staff of a DZ, other than "In my day..." stories (I have a few). Big guy?! 68" at 189lbs is not "big" (is it?) Most of my gear was sponsored, so most of it will go back to the sponsors, there will be some odds and ends up for sale though. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

John, Personal reasons mostly. Plus burned out with the politics and the direction the sport is going. I can only run in to the brick wall so many times before I decide to change direction. You all be safe and have fun! Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

We have been practicing for several weeks in full show mode as well as months in the small part mode. I like the idea of as many DZ's as possible doing some thing local like the OP asks! Tandem Students wearing the Hand Cam?
matthewcline replied to catfishhunter's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Well it used to be until this last Summer Meeting. Yes, I am guilty of not looking up the current BSR's and never noticed that it was removed from the FAR's either. The FAR's still state that the student is to be given instruction and access to the deployment device. I guess with the latest and greatest from USPA that we simply instruct them to pull before impact instead of a specific altidude........ Yep...missed that one too! USPA seems to be be going after more convenience than safety lately! I still use both of them when I do tandems though. Is this your home DZ? MEL MEL are you asking me if E-Town in my Home DZ? No, it is nearby but I have never jumped there. I think the Hand cam on the student COULD be safer and better than on the T-I. At least then the T-I would handle EP's with two hands. Tandem Students wearing the Hand Cam?
matthewcline replied to catfishhunter's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I do not see a problem with the student wearing the camera. I do however did note the the student in the video was not wearing a altimeter or helmet. For the people that do not know, the altimeter is required by both the FAA and USPA.Not for Tandem Students by either USPA or the FAA. The helmet is only required by USPA.For all students EXCEPT Tandem Students per USPA Also of note, the pilot was operating a handheld camera (turned around to the back) instead of actually flying the plane when that should be his main focus. Anyone that actually has been in a stalled 206 (I have) would really appreciate the pilot actually focusing on flying at this point in the jump run. Thanks for coming in and clearing up a few gray spots Jim. Let me through one in the pot. Group Freefall Skills, as we progress through the sport, does include grips for the "base" of a formation. Since USPA allows a one to one ratio of "D" license holders to Coach (with proper approvals of course) can you clear up gripped exits for Group Skydiving Skills, not for stability?
