  1. Is Texas A&M planning on suing ALL the NFL Teams? Matt Are all of the NFL teams going to disregard a righteous trademark? This isn't TAMU's fault. Sure it is not their "Fault", but they are the ones pushing the suit. The 12th man has been used for a long time. I remember it in high school (Grad in '86). I understand they trademarked it, but is it really "theirs"? I do not see this as a "win" if they sue all the Football Teams who use the "12th man". 2. Actually, I mentioned Sig in my first post. Ah! So you did. I guess given the choice between Shit and Go Blind, I chose the latter. But you can't deny that Gibbs is cool. Yeah, Jethro Gibbs and Chuck had coffee the other day, to discuss the division of the world, I think. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!
  3. That is the guy. But I know nothing of the cost. One of the guys from Team Glock said it was really good. I am not sure what forum it is now, I was in a hundred over the last few days. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!
  4. As well as Dev Group and most of all the rest of the Seal Teams. The new Sig P226 MK25 seems pretty robust. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!
  5. Too be fair, you see all sorts of aftermarket, custom stuff for all popular models. Typically these items are aimed at the competitive and active combat shooter. But us weekend warriors, we got to have the cool guy shit! (that is the real sales). Heck the new glocktriggers.com trigger boasts it "feels like a 1911" . 6. Strongly disagree. Rugers LCP, or Little Copy Pistol, because it is a rip off of a KelTec 380 design, may be fun to target shoot but the 380 round sucks for self defense. I don't want to get shot by any gun, but if I had to chose I would rather be shot by a 380 than a 45!!! At the minimum I would go with a 9mm, and the heaviest 9mm self defense round that you gun will shoot reliably. Go heavy. 22's kill just as easy as a 454 Kasul, in trained/practiced hands. Size only matters if the shots aren't well placed. What ever Steve gets for his wife and himself, they need to spend the money on the bulk ammo and practice. 7. Mike, I was referencing his OP. The 1911 in Steve's hands will be just fine. Maybe I am not following what your saying with "Make it carry ready". You quoted Vicker's but Hanely (sp) says the opposite, both come from the SOF world and both carried 1911's and Glocks. They each have an opinion. In the end this is just us giving advice, or expressing our opinions. I personally tend to start from what I know then expand out, I was just advising Steve using that theory. My 1911, S&W Sigma .40, 92F and Glock are all "stock", the only thing I needed to do to get them carry ready, was practice, a lot! Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. 8. I think you misunderstand. The FAA requires AAD's for students (Tandems Only), and they are required to be maintained to manufacturer standards. The point was that a DZ, and instructor, and rigger would all be named in a suit if a fatal student jump was done without a properly maintained AAD. I'm not a lawyer, but that just seems obvious. And of course, nobody's suggesting that's what happened here. _Am Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!
  9. As you're seeing there are as many opinions as options. But the rule, that you're well aware of, matters not the type and caliber of the weapon, but the proficiency. The 1911 is some thing your trained with and comfortable with, so a nice option is a Range Officer, Commander or model like that. I liked my 1911 when I had one in the Army. When they took it away and gave me the M-9 (92f) I got good enough with it, I liked it too. Same for when I went from an M-16A1 to an A2 then to the M-4. Practice made me proficient and as I got proficient I was happy with them. Now for the wife simplicity may be a factor. .38 Special may just be right. Make an ammo bulk purchase from Lucky Gunner . com and go to the range. have fun, be safe and train well! Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!
  10. I agree that, that line, may not be smart to cut, but that was not the discussion, it was broader than that. I have landed several canopies with an A line broken, PLF'd the landing and walked in to the loft. That was with big Demonstration canopies, with the sub 100 foot Velo, I don't think it I would try it. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!
  11. In middle school we had a pop quiz. Question 1: Write your name in the upper right corner of you test answer sheet. Question 2: Write the class period and teachers name in the upper left corner of your answer sheet. Question 3: You are done, you may stop taking the test. It then went on for a total 50 questions, various subjects. At around question 35 it asked if you had read Question 3, most wrote "Yes". I stopped on Question 7: When you are done with the test turn it in immediately. That was my clue I reread #3, erased my answers from 4, 5, and 6 and then turned in my test. 45 Students in the Class, I was six to be sent out to the play ground. AS there was no time limit the last student stayed till lunch, four hours, finishing his test. We all learned a lesson on "conditioned responses" that day. 12. There are plenty of .40 and .45 cal weapons that fit the smaller hands. The 1911 has siblings to look, at all in .45, they are smaller and easier to carry for CCW holders. The Glocks are nice, like you I was unsure of them at first. But over time and through a bit of education I like them now. I also like my S&W Sigma .40VE, some people hate them for the heavy trigger pull, but I am OK with it. There are so many options out there now. Some ranges have rentals to shoot and that might help. 15. Except (to continue our dream sequence..), that to be "all in" (post-December 2011) would be an outright abrogation of the SOFA, which even if it might be sustained legally, might be politically untenable; whereas to re-classify troops into "non-combat" roles* would technically comply with SOFA and therefore have greater political (as well as legal) cover. (* I shouldn't have used the word "advisors" in my earlier post; I should have simply said "non-combat designations".) Staying in the fantasy land a bit longer: I think we can agree, he would be "all in" and hidden under SOFA Terminology. Using the SOFA "outs" he has as a POTUS and his experiences as Naval Aviator in Viet Nam. But, I do not think if he was POTUS in 2001 we would have gone to Iraq. 17. given his criticism every time Obama did not use troops, I don't agree. He wanted more force in Libya, and he wasn't happy with the pullout in Iraq either. Of course, as a mere Senator he is in a good position to Monday Morning QB it all. Perhaps he would act differently if it weren't merely for political posturing. I was only responding to the "limited advisor" idea. I do not think a "President McCain" would follow that path, I think he would be "all in". But he is not the POTUS, so we, fortunately, do not have to deal with it. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!
  18. Maybe, but maybe not. The SOFA was not a treaty formally ratified by the Senate under Article II of the Constitution (in fact, only a small minority of US international agreements treaties are of the "Senate-ratified treaty" version nowadays). Instead, the SOFA is more properly classified as either a Congressional-Executive Agreement, or a Sole-Executive Agreement. That alone gives a president some wiggle room to unilaterally breach or modify the terms of such an agreement. Additionally, in 1979 the Supreme Court declined to hear a case where Congress challenged President Carter's authority to unilaterally abrogate a defense treaty. The federal courts also declined to intervene to prevent President Bush from unilaterally withdrawing the US from the ABM treaty in 2002. The effect of all this is that if a President McCain decided that he wanted to act in conflict with the SOFA, there is some precedent that the federal courts would probably let him get away with it. Plus, I don't see McCain as the kind of guy who backs away from a fight (usually) when he feels strongly principled about something. Plus-plus, the SOFA applies principally to combat troops, not to troops technically classified as non-combat advisors. Which means that troops can be justified in being there if they're re-classified to non-combat designations. In December 2009, Secretary of Defense Gates predicted that the US would still have upwards of 10,000 "non-combat" troops in Iraq after December, 2011. So on this basis, I still think there's support for my "historical what-if" prediction. All good points, but I think a "President McCain" would not touch the none-combat troop- advisor idea after his experience with Viet Nam. But as he is not the President, it is a neat to debate "what if". IMO the SOFA is the only reasons we are out. IMO, a personal agenda is the only reason we went in. 22. Some updated info for the discussion. The person who posted the video is Niklas Daniel, highly experienced jumper. The canopy is a PD Velo The line in question appears to be the outside A line. IMO it changes nothing, he is still right. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!
  23. Where are you getting your instruction from? Some of your views are a bit, misinformed. Cutting the one line is not a new malfunction, just a new result of the same malfunction. If thought out, usually, means problem reduced/removed and it is safe to land. The Canopy only needs a "few" lines to "function". In the end the design works BEST with ALL lines, but you can land with a few missing, many of use have. One should never use money as motivation during a malfunction and EP's. YES! On should always think about what they are doing! Just like the Jumper in the video did! Matt Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!
  24. For you and Hellis if I may. He was altitude aware the whole time, besides his statement to the fact, one can see in the video what looks like occasional checks of altitude. First he tries to identify the problem, then remedy the situation. He finds he can control it to some degree and then makes what appears to be several attempts to keep it level and straight, needed for landing (more or less). He finds he can't and then makes his decision on when he will cut away the main and deploy his reserve. True, one does not want to "waste" altitude, but he had plenty to use. Maybe cutting the line helps or doesn't, one does not need ALL the suspension lines to have a fully functioning canopy, ask around. True, he is at fault for the initial step through and it being packed that way, other than that he did an excellent job and we are discussing it and hopefully learning from it! 25. Lets review this logic. Chicago had a crime problem and so they banned guns. Chicago continued to have a crime problem. Some people, like yourself believe that the Chicago crime guns are all coming from the suburbs. Does that now constitute justification to ban guns in the suburbs, where there isn't a crime problem? And if they did so, and Chicago still had a crime problem after that, what next? Would you want to ban guns in neighboring states? How many law-abiding people should have to forfeit their gun rights in this ever-widening ban, to try and solve the problem with Chicago's criminals? Maybe Chicago should just crack down on their own criminals, instead of everyone else who isn't guilty of anything. I don't wish to ban guns, as you well know. I just want to make it far more difficult for nutters and convicted felons to get them. This is an idea, on the surface, I agree with. I am not sure how to define "nutter", and not sure if it is ALL felons or just violent ones. At first glance I want to say "All" as to the felons issue. The "nutter" is more complicated. Some are "nutters" for religious reasons, according to others. Some are "nutter" for political reasons, according to others, and it just goes on and on.
