I have to strongly disagree with you, Matt. Any body traveling other than straight down is developing lift. Even the old blunt Apolla capsules developed lift and were "flown" on reentry with good precision. Granted, the human body is FAR from an ideal wing planform, but we DO generate lift as we track. It doesn't require that perfect airfoil shape from your college physics textbook. Ever fly those flat winged balsa planes as a kid? That's a flat wing producing lift. Ever check out the variety of airfoils (or lack there of) on many flying objects, including guided missles, supersonic aircraft, or the perfectly symmetrical airfoil of aerobatic airplanes? These develop lift not so much thru the classic Bernoulli principle, but thru angle of attack. You can call it "simply deflecting the wind" if you like, but it's lift, plain and simple. It's this lift that makes us move across the sky and fall slower when we're in an efficient track. With that said, there is a most efficient angle of attack for the human body. Samadhi has a minor point that a short dive could be an efficient way to start out. Think of a hang glider being dropped from a balloon. The first few seconds it dives to pick up speed, then pulls up. However, my practical experience from jumping with booties is that we have plenty of airspeed at break off, and that aggressively straightening the legs as soon as I turn around gets me plenty of horizontal acceleration to start a good flat track. Once again there's an optimum angle of attack, but I have no clue what it is. I'm guessing it's in the 40 degree range, though. That's cool. By "True lift" I mean the ability to climb. Not just slow your fall rate. With out the addition of a wing suit, we only slow our fall rates down. I understand what your saying, but IMO, (yeah, I know what that means) it is not "lift" in the practical sense, aeronautical, OK. Plus, in the end, I think we agree, the booties and flat track are best for one already in freefall, starting from a balloon or cliff, use a different technique, one that works for that event. Not a Dr. but yeah, he suffered major TBI! and he nor his family would listen to friends pleas to get help. Sadly, this arrest, may be the best thing for him. I just hope the stolen rigs and fake credit cards are the only things he did. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

Really? This kind of makes me think the whole bail revoked thing is more of a "made for TV ratings and political reelection points" stunt then. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

Looks to me like more photographic evidence that diving below and then attempting to glide out, is not the ideal method. The sport evolves and we old timers would do well to evolve with it. (not directed at you Spot) Tracking methods have changed, improved even, and those who wish to ignore it will be the ones creating a sky hazard and causing an incident report in which i read of another friends death. You are being misinformed if this is being taught to you by some one. A flat track will deflect (no true "lift" btw, just more wrong info) air along the length of your body-creating drive ans thus speed, lifting the hips, rolling the shoulders and a few other small things each person uses differently, slows down your fall rate (when compared to the formation still falling, the false perception of "lift"), this allows for more time to gain more distance, to be safer on opening. Matt Hey Matt, what do you reckon is doing the 'driving' if not lift:drag ratio? Is it magical? I think our bodies are subject to drag and lift. we create lift with speed (thus the dive). If you stall the dive then you will lose lift (pull too sharply out of the dive) - thus perhaps this is your "illusion of lift" comment (mistaking the zero-G feeling of the onset of a stall with "lift")??? hard to understand people on here lots of times

None of your comments have been proven or shown correct, how do you not see that? The Army has no position, I only represent myself here. The Velocity comments and wear comments are science, observable, and provable as fact, remember. I think, IIRC, Quade's comment may have been to us i regards to you. In another post above your proven to be false in a statement you claim is fact, that in most cases is called "Lying". You say we badger you? we prove your conspiracy is wrong daily and yet you keep bringing it back in here. We put up with your insults yet after a short ban your back in here. You claim the POTUS ordered this, yet he staff and records prove that to be, false. You claim to be of perfect memory, yet can't remember your own written words. You calm to have been "recruited" when, maybe thinking about whispering a threat to your draft board, and then they arrested, tried, sentenced, commuted sentence and blackmailed you to participate, all with NO RECORD to work on a none-existent project, Named after it happened, You claim the Co-Pilot/TOG to be a co-conspirator yet nothing backs you up. McCoy is dead, yet you say you speak to him. No one else does, not even his family. Witnesses and family identified his body, as well as forensic tests. Yet, your pic of a news paper article is to convince he is alive? Science and fact have shown, over and over, that your conspiracy is wrong and has no bearing. Time to move on. There are more recent ones you could hang you hat on and many would join your charge. You can continue to insult me personally if you wish, it is your choice, it only shows your character though. Makes his lawyers (and the Florida BAR) dumbasses too, they didn't see an expired passport as an issue or a legal defense fund that was set up after his arrest as a personal asset. The State feel differently, but maybe once in court and both sides get to talk to the Judge, they and we observers can see the real deal. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. Then correct it, these are all YOUR "FACTS". None of them add up, they have all been shown to be incorrect and yet you persist. Now Blevins has an interview set up with "TOG" and you get "nice", after slandering him for, how long now? Do you not understand why I said "hard of hearing"? You don't pay attention very well. She wanted to exit, she was just having trouble getting her leg into position. She obviously did not want to exit- she was clinging to side of the plane- her hands were pried off at least 3 times that I saw, maybe more. I don't care what she said in the interview. Wait, she says she wanted to jump and was just trying to shift her weight for her legs, and you say she is lying? Odd. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. Well, they tend to be fought against pretty hard for 12 to 18 months and Elections, they do run every two years, more or less yes? It is not a Right or Left only issue, they all do it, just from different sides, as it suits them. In years past it was a loud call from DNC, and now a loud call from the RNC, same issue, similar actions. It needs to be done, reasonably, always. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. Most of the laws have been getting pushed for, long, before this election cycle, they are just getting attention now, as it is relevant "news". Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

I pays for none of the Skydiving Related Certs right now. Piloting needs to be a Commercial Rating and Accredited School. There is two Riggers School working on getting recognized, but that has been getting "worked on" as long as I have been in the sport. The GI Bill and its related funds are intended for accredited Colleges, Universities and Vocational Schools. Using it for any thing else opens you up to legal issues no former SM can afford. OK. So it is obvious to you that parachutes have varying capacities for opening speeds. This is a wonderfully enlightening fact. So, if you were an experienced high altitude jump expert and familiar with emergency jet jumps, you think you could pick a parachute that would open successfully at the speeds Matt suggests?? I suggest that this is another mute point, since Duane survived the jump with only a stairway injury to the right leg. That injury had no causical effects from the parachute because he was trained to pull at ten seconds. I am not suggesting any thing, just using actual. observed, science and fact. The Co-pilot had to be hard of hearing if I understand your current theory for the "suggested" stall. But as he is also "TOG" (Your claim remember?), it confuses me. So, is he a less than competent pilot and a world renowned parachute rigger? Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

I was thinking more of the time period in which the flight slowed down to try to get the guy in back to leave the plane. To the best of my knowledge, the only time the airliner slowed to below about 170 knots was just after takeoff in Seattle when they did so to help Cooper get the stairs down. My understanding was that the speed fell below the recommended stall speed before it was realized, no problems. Was that MPH or KTS? 170 was a number that sounds familiar from that conversation. I'm not sure, could have been 160, but I'd be surprised. The co-pilot would know. Drag strip parachutes open as high as 325 MPH in every run with a ton more weight to stop. How would that relate?? Today, yes they do, but they do it in a staged opening, with more modern materials rated well beyond the forces they are subjected too.. Back in '71 they did not have the same materials and did not open at the same speeds. This is in regards to the Dragsters chutes only. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

"Coop" as we called him was trained to pull on the count of ten seconds which was enough time from 170 kts to slow him down. The particular chute that was provided in the dummy pack (the good chute marked with the "X") was chosen by, packed by, and stitched shut by a very topnotch packer guy with significant jumpers respect. The chute did not fail, because Duane Weber lived through it. No 727 jumpers have EVER been killed attempting this jump. I do not know where TOG got the chute, but because it worked, it must have been OK. Huh? There have been hundreds of higher speed successful jumps. I think your point is proven mute. The airliner was doing about 170 KIAS (Knots Indicated Airspeed) which is between 220 and 225 MPH (Miles Per Hour) True Airspeed for the conditions that existed at the time of the jump. Cooper would probably still be doing about 200 MPH in 10 seconds. Most military static line jumps are from aircraft doing about 140 MPH or close to that. Closer to 155 MPH. Having taught it for most of my career, and jumped over 18 years of it as well. But, a sewn shut chute, tends not to work, exit speed would not matter. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

Unlikely, unless the chute was really aged, poorly maintained and the A/C was in the max range of deployment speed. BUT, not impossible. Matt An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!
