  1. Where were you thinking of jumping? Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. --Douglas Adams

  4. The best thing we can do is to ignore it and stop talking about them. That's all they want, and we're just feeding into it. It's just another retarded Bonfire popularity contest. Ooh ooh, i want a number so i feel special! lame. 6. Yes, the jumps will be split evenly among all anti-goggle activists. Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. --Douglas Adams
  7. It's been my theory for some time that the goggles have mystical powers. I think they're trying to take over the world, and apparently several of our dear friends have come under their nefarious influence. The only solution, as I see it, is to put each and every goggle victim through a rigorous de-gogglification program. This program consists of negative financial reinforcement: for every post on DZ.com in which the poster is wearing goggles in their avatar, they must buy me ten jumps. Positive reinforcement is provided by the liberal application of alcoholic beverages for any goggle victim who successfully removes the goggles from their avatar. It's the only way, people. Who's with me? Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. --Douglas Adams

  23. I don't think that's how metal detectors work. Without googling, i'm pretty sure that metal detectors are loops of wire that have an inductive current set up in them by the motion of magnetic objects near them. The detector is just an antenna to detect magnetic flux -- it doesn't actually emit anything. Now I'm going to google it and see if I'm right. edit: nope. Hand held metal detectors do produce their own magnetic fields. Interesting stuff. http://home.howstuffworks.com/metal-detector1.htm Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. --Douglas Adams

  25. It depends on the application. For instance, you don't want your hip to be weak, but you want the joint to have low friction. So you're going to use materials that have the right characteristics. There's also the issue of the bio-material interface. When you implant something, the body has a healing response that depends in large part on the material's electrochemical and surface properties. You don't want a lot of scar tissue around the implant, but at the same time you DO want the cellular/bone structure to form a tight seal around the implant and integrate it into the rest of the body (i.e. not reject the implant). There's a large amount of research on polymer coatings for bio-implantable devices with the goal of guiding the immune response to what is an extremely traumatic event for the body. Titanium is nice because it's strong, light, and relatively non-reactive. Note I'm not a doctor, just a materials scientist with an interest in the bio-material interface.
